Impressive. There may still be some hiccups, but Serif is delivering a lot of value for the money. And you get to own, not rent, your software. What a novel concept!

It's shown that when you rename the picture frames you need to do it on the master and on the loose pages. However, when I do it if you edit the master or the page via edit linked then it's applied on the other one automatically.

I'm probably missing something, but you are the third creator I've clicked on to find out how to create a master page. It seems everyone assumes first-time users already know how to create a master page. It might be just me who doesn't know how to do this, and it's not a default, at least on my latest version.

Hi @gareyford9071. Sorry to hear you thought the above video missed the mark. The video above is specifically on the Smart Master Page system that Publisher offers. We have a specific tutorial on creating master pages under our V1 TH-cam playlist that you may find more helpful. (I'll drop a link below).
Essentially to create a Master Page in Publisher you use the Master Pages Panel which by default is found just above the pages panel and click the 'add master' button (first symbol/ icon). There's also a few examples in our help section which could also be helpful.
      I hope this helps.

Hi @@Chubzdoomer, So V2 tutorials will be the most up to date but in general the V1 tutorials will still be valid/ relevant. There will be some UI differences and you'll have access to more tools in V2 but lots of the tools still work the same way.

Hi Three very quick questions please 🙏(well, the required replies are short/quick lol!):
    1) If I want to apply a black background to all pages of my document via a master page, the only way to do this is to create a rectangle with a black fill and drag it to cover the entire master page's white canvas (and apply this master page to all the pages), correct?
(*ie. There's no way to just set black as the default canvas color for this document, or for the master page which will be applied to all pages.)
    2) If I want to apply different elements to the document's pages (eg. page numbers / black background rectangle / shape), for EACH element I want to apply to the rest of the pages, I should create a SEPARATE master page for it, right?
(*ie. I should not create ONE master page which contains ALL the different elements I want to apply throughout the document, and just apply this master to all the pages - because if the master has a black rectangle background, and a page number, in it, I would want the black rectangle to be the lowest layer on each page, while the page number on the top of the list..)
    3) How do I "tell" the app on what LAYER LEVEL to apply the master page in the pages that it's applied to (given that the master page, as opposed to the rest of the pages, only contains ONE layer: the element that will be applied throughout the document - eg. a page-number layer on its own)?
(*eg. if all the pages have photos that take up the entire page - so each page has multiple layers of photos - if I want to apply a page number to all these pages, this applied layer needs to be ABOVE all the pages' layers so that the page numbers are visible. But, by default, AP applies this page-number layer on the master to the BOTTOM of the layers' list of each page, making the page number invisible as it's hidden behind the all photos' layers which cover each page! So to fix this, the only way I see possible, is to MANUALLY drag the page-number layer to the top of the layers' list for EACH of the 100+ pages... :
🙄 Which of course beats the purpose of master page instant global application lol)
    THANK YOU!!

Hi @nounix, I'll try to answer your questions the best I can.
      1) To make your page have a black background, using the rectangle tool and filling the shape with a solid black fill which is then applied to a master page is a good idea/ method. You can then apply that master page to document pages or even the master page with the rectangle on to another master page.
      2) I'll be honest I don't quite understand this question. Because you can apply master pages to master pages you could choose to create separate master pages with elements like different backgrounds or automatic fields like running headers or page numbers. But I think for the most part I'd focus on creating complete layouts that have most of those elements combined onto a single master pages. For instance I'd normally have a master page with a header and footer containing page number fields, running header fields and section names fields all on one master page. You can then simply use that master page to apply that master to a document page.
      3) Automatically when you applying a master page to a document page it places the master page at the bottom of the layer stack. One way to combat this is to apply the master to a single document page. Move the master page layer to where you would like it positioned and then using the pages panel duplicate the document page. Duplicating the page will also duplicate the position of the master page in the layer stack. It's a bit of a work around but may help in the short term.
I hope the above helps, my apologies if I've not quite understood question 2. Happy to go back and forth if I've misinterpreted your question. Again it maybe worth popping over to the Affinity Forum. You can always tag me in the comment over there and I'll get the notification.

Thank you for the video!!! 2 short questions please?:
    1) Can you tell me if there's any difference in opening a photo with the Affinity Photo app, and opening it in the Photo persona while inside Publisher? Meaning is there any difference in the available tools of Photo when opening it via the Photo Persona as opposed to opening it directly with Photos?
    2) Iis it possible to have all 3 apps (Photo, Designer, Publisher) launchable in the Photos app like it's possible when in Publisher (there are 3 icons/buttons of the 3 apps on the top left in Publisher)? I don't see them in Photo, so maybe there's a way to "toggle them on" in Photo so that they're also available there?

    • @benjaminviney
      @benjaminviney ปีที่แล้ว +2

Hi @nounix, Thank you for your comments. I wonder if in future you may find a faster answer on the Affinity Forum pages, Its taken me a while to get round to answering them so I'm sorry for that.
      2) Strangely I'm going to answer question 2 first. Each of the Affinity applications works on the principle of having a series of personas. The personas themselves are seen almost as work spaces. They give you access to tools that are good work a specific workflow or task and the idea is that it gives you nice concise and streamlined workspace to carry out those tasks. For instance in designer there's a vector persona for vector work and a pixel persona for raster work. The tools change to suit the job you're trying to do. Photo similarly has personas for tone mapping, or developing.
In this way Publisher is a little bit special, rather than coming up with a text persona or a edit persona we decided to add in the capabilities of Photo and Designer, hence the Designer and Photo persona. It is the only affinity app to have that capability and hopefully what that does is provide you with the tools and abilities to be more creative directly in Publisher.
      1) Using the Photo Persona in Affinity Publisher gives you access to lots of the tools from Photo but not all of them. Off the top of my head I can't remember the exact number but it's probably about 90% of the tools from Photo. There are a few specific features that you would still have to open the document back in Photo to be able to achieve. Though it's worth pointing out that we do have a shared file format, so you can just easily open the Publisher document in Photo and vice versa.
Hope this helps, sorry for taking so long to reply.

When I move my mouse over the Master page and hold down the left button a small icon comes with me but no page. Of course when I release my mouse, no matter where the icon disappears.

      @@christianbarisch3207 Hi Christian,
Thank you for your comment and sorry to hear that you’re struggling with the feature.
I have a few suggestions as to what it might be but it is tricky to identify without seeing it in action.
First things first make sure that the page you want to edit already has a master page applied to it. By default, it normally has ‘Master A’ applied but if you’re ever unsure you can right click over the document page in the pages panel and choose ‘Clear Master’ and then re-apply a master page.
With a master applied in my case ‘Master Page A’, make sure to add any content such as images or text you want added to the page is applied to the actual document page (Not the master page). If you apply it only to the master page and not the document page when you apply a master, it will wipe out the content and replace it with the new master’s content instead.
I think this is probably the case but as I said hard to ascertain for certain over the TH-cam comment section. If the above doesn’t rectify it feel free to jump over to the Affinity Forum and we can have a more in-depth discussion where we can use screen shots/ screen recordings as well.
      Hope this helps.

Hi Gayle, I hope you've been enjoying Photo and Designer. Unfortunately Affinity Publisher doesn't have any HTML export settings at the moment. It was initially designed as a document layout tool primarily for books, magazines and so on.
Though I guess you could use it to help layout the flow/ design of your website but alas I don't think its quite the right tool for the job at the moment.
Maybe in the future, who knows...

Hi Berkey, Thank you for your comment.
You can turn facing pages on or off when either first creating your document in the new document dialogue and unticking the facing pages check box under the pages tab or in a current document you can do the same by going to File> Document Setup and then unchecking the tick box under the 'Model' tab 'Facing Pages'.
Alternatively if you want to use facing pages but have the first page start on the left you can change that also in the model tab of the document setup window.
