I'll estimate that 90% of divers don't get wet. 9% were once used to go snorkeling or scuba diving on vacation or are taken in to the pool just because they can be. Like 1% are actually dove with.
Aren't all Datejusts regardless of age 36mm?? Is that a "boy size?" Daytjust II or Datejust 41 are the only allowable size?? Nonsense. I do think, however, the broader lug thickness of the modern Datejust (36mm) wears perfectly. Great vid!!
yeah, many watch reviewers try to impart their opinion regarding smaller vintage and even newer watches. they try to shame you for liking the absurdly huge new 0.3 mm larger submariner, when i struggle to tell the difference between the new and old model.
Just an outstanding video. You summed up years of today’s average (at least to start) watch journey in just over 8 minutes. Kudos to you. I hope you keep making videos for years to come. “Get yourself a Rolex...” classic.
3 criterias to collecting luxury watches - You like them, you can afford them and you don’t care what anyone may think or say about your expensive hobby.
Absolutely love this video, only came across your channel few weeks ago. I must say I love your open and honest opinion and dialogue in your videos. Keep up the great work.
I like how this video put things in perspective. I bought 8 watches in 2018. It is now mid-2019 and so far i bought only 1 watch (an oris 65). I am at that point where i try to buy only that "speak" to me, even if there are other watches as good or better.
Good pickup on that Oris 65 and good on you for slowing down. The Oris 65 (Ref. 013377074064-0782018) speaks to me but it falls in that price range that I’m currently avoiding. I’m looking to get the Tudor Black Bay and perhaps another watch in the $3K range, before coming back down to Oris, etc. Hopefully it will work out.
I can recognise a number of things. Your personality (resistance to marketing of luxury brands) will decide whether you will keep on liking watches for what they are, or whether you will grow into snobbery and want a certain luxury brand. Personally my watch collecting path has turned completely towards vintage.
First?! Awesome! Really enjoying your collection and content. Happy you've kept your Seikos and explain your journey. Love the (ETA) Aikon and the 214270. Keep going with this.
Loved this video! So true. All the steps are so true. I'm up to the step that I just bought my first swiss piece. Brand new 2019 seamaster 300m. And already wishing I could sell and buy a rolex! I am loving the explorer 1 at the moment.
@rob gee I have the 2019 omega Seamaster pro as well, and a 2018 Rolex Submariner date. Omega is fantastic and maybe superior in some technical aspects, just best value for money today in my opinion. But the Rolex is just at another level. Only way to explain is to have one and live with it. I know it’s double the cost, but if you can swing it and or get your hands on one, I believe it’s worth it. Nonetheless I hope you enjoy your watches to the fullest. Cheers!
@@markgads8017 I wish i was enjoying the new smp300. The lume pip was the wrong colour. Noticed on the same day I brought her home. Took a 1 month battle with omega to have them replace the bezel. It came back to me with the bezel misaligned. I wasn't very happy. Called the service centre again and they said it's within their specification. Messaged omega in swiss direct and they have agreed to replace the watch with a new one or something with the same value. Very poor QC that I have experienced.
So sorry to hear about how you were treated. That’s unacceptable and I’m shocked they didn’t immediately rectify the issue. Makes me nervous about sending over the watch if a problem arises. Hope things work out for you in the end.
I tried the Explorer 1 on my wrist and it’s hard to explain but I wasn’t as excited to see it on my wrist as when I put on a Tudor Black Bay. The weird thing is that I consider the Explorer my grail but probably isn’t anymore. That’s not to say you won’t like it. Best advice is to try a watch on your wrist before making a purchase.
This video should be included in the high school curriculum. I just recently got into this watch collecting thing few months ago. I have never been interested in superfluous things nor was I ever an ambitious man. My interests has always been finding out why are we even on this earth. But we desire all things of beauty, though what defines beauty is quite subjective. Watch combines art and vanity, the two often go hand in hand. Fast forward few months, I'm already on the thought process of getting 1 or 2 grail pieces and be done with it. But then I question the purpose of grail. I've seen people stay in budget collection for years. If life is just an experience, then all emotions are part of the experience. You may feel bad about amassing cheap Seikos, homages, fashion watches. On a broader sense, the realization and the regret is also part of the experience. You may go through life as a king or a beggar, if you haven't figured out the why, the end is the same.
I have to say you have hit the nail on the head and driven it into the timber with one blow. Yesterday I purchased my first Rolex. After spending crazy amounts of money and 45 watches later I now realise that I should have brought the Rolex first and be done with the whole chasing game. While it has been fun it has also been exhausting . Maybe it is not about the destination but the thrill of the journey . Keep making great videos we all love them.
a great summation of the journey of a watch collector. I couldn't help smiling as I related to so many of the points. Great advice for all, budding watch collectors take note. :-)
Totally agree with the ‘get a Rolex’ comment you’ll either love it and keep it forever or not and flip it BUT at least you’ll have first hand experience of a luxury watch benchmark against which to judge/ appreciate others.
Perfect video, Sir. Loved the dig at Christian Zeron at the end hahaha Fortunately for me, I stopped myself from entering Phase 3: Accumulation, after reading comments and advice on TH-cam. Almost jumped on the “tick all the boxes” bandwagon but woke up. You’re right about the $1,000 - $2,000 watches. That is the Danger Zone!!! Avoid at all costs. I started paying attention to the higher tier watches. I tried on the Tudor Black Bay Heritage with burgundy bezel a few times and decided it’s the watch for me, so I will hold off on buying watches until I get it.
So I went straight from phase 2 to phase 5 ^^ My first watch was a Seiko SKX009, then a Casio DW-5000 and I knew from there that the next will be the last so I went directly for a Rolex Explorer :)
“Hurts so good” This video hits the spot! Some of us start high and make different kinds of mistakes (like going independent too early. Or buying out of frustration vs seasoned research (ie. My first datejust). Never got into the Hamilton, Tissot thing. I now buy cautiously and longingly after much consternation. Now I have no regrets with my ultimate selection. “Patience young Jedi!”
Thanks for the time and effort to put these videos together, note they are appreciated. Your analogy of the TH-camrs are spot on. AC3 is wild and now has a small spectrum, but without him I would have bought a Graham and not my Rolex. The watch phases have always been there, so I have just been trying to purchase pieces that I like. So only my last watch was a Seiko, because it was such a stunner and versatile.
I think on this scale, I'm still in "Phase 2," I've been collecting for about a year and a half now, and haven't spent more than $350 on a single watch, I'm eying Seikos, Hamiltons and Lacos. It's funny, I'm just getting ready to shoot on this same topic, I've got my notes all written out, but I think I see it from a different perspective. I think some guys can live happily in any of these "phases," without necessarily progressing through all of them. I'm thinking in terms of three different kinds of collectors with three different goals.
Dude, watch this video again. Resist the Hamilton/Seiko/Laco thing. I own one Seiko, one Orient, and one Seagull and have stopped until I get a Tudor. The Random Rob example that the author cites here is on point.
@@eyeheartsushi2212 It's tempting to go that route, but I have two qualms. First, it'd take me about 2 years to save up to buy a Tudor, and that's basically if I didn't buy anything watch related during that time, which doesn't sound like that much fun. Second, I'm not really sure how I'd feel about wearing a luxury watch out in public, or spending that kind of cash on something like that. Honestly the only way I'd consider buying a luxury watch would be if my channel really took off to the point where I could buy one from the ad revenue, which again, I'm a long ways off from that.
@@robertlindo8058 …yep and now for an update, it’s now 238 believe it or not, money was disappearing faster than I could make, so it slowed me down, kind of,I’ve almost lost complete interest in watches, so I don’t see that number getting any higher.
Spot on. The challenge here is that the cycle repeats. I started selling watches for the first time to have a balanced and wearable collection, Omega, Rolex. Got rid of all the redundant and inexpensive pieces, started wearing the ones that weren’t getting wrist time. And then, microbrand again, same excuse as before. “It’s just a few hundred and I don’t really have spec beast beater”. And then another “a field and a diver and that’s it”.
I def agree with these phases. We all go through them. One way is through experience, though not a cheap way, but to experience as many as you can so you know your likes and dislikes as a collector. Everyone's tastes are different to.
I love this video. I learned through my mistakes and my journey of collecting watches. Can you please do a video of what can a watch collector do to rotate wearing their collection in order to appreciate them individually?
I started smack at the middle with the Speedy and have been bouncing back and forth like a pinball machine. Nonetheless, we all end up in the rationalization phase asking if We only need a 1 or 3 watch collection...great psychoanalytic video of our hobby (or sickness)😂
Yep, I'm in phase 3. Got a few nice seikos and ready to sell to consolidate for my first luxury piece. A Tudor black bay bronze. The problem, I keep putting off actually selling them (for the last four months).
You absolutely nailed it!! Very well thought. Couldn't have said it better. I'm at phase 4. Here's saying hello from a fellow collector in HK. Would be great to meet up bro.
Scary accurate. Diesel was my daily, always wanted a Bond seamaster for 25 years. Sticker shock and then researched used. Where I differ, I saved up and bought my seamaster brand new from an AD. Now looking at moonwatch and why else to get without going crazy on price :)
I do not bought a bunch of Seiko’s, but i have one. Gave it away, when i’ve got my Tissot. Then looking on that movement, and something happen. Bought my next automatic watch, bought a loupe and from that point i could not turn back anymore. From my standpoint, it is also the movement that inspire.
Excellent and sage advice. I'm passing the Seiko stage and moving quickly upmarket. I get what you are saying about hitting luxury at the start. I'm finding that as I move up, I didn't really know what quality meant. So I'm looking at a grand Seiko or Longines ultra cron. Or something of that order. And would love a Rolex but they won't call me 😆😂.
I'm in that phase now where I realize I'm not that happy with my mid-tier watches (Seiko, Squale etc) so I'm selling everything. Buying a beater to wear over the next year while I save up for a grail. Going to be an OP39, Explorer I or a Sub C if I can save up for one of those.
Perfect video, you said it all so well. I’m not a collector, but I know my fair share. For me it is about learning more than owning, I’m cool with two entry level pieces while I save for an Omega, Tudor, or Rolex. In the mean time, “I’m just sitting here watching the wheel go round and round....,.”
Great video, Truer words have not been spoken! Glad to hear that my progression has followed a well worn path and that I’m not alone in this affliction. 50 + so far. Definitely in phase 5 and it doesn’t get slower, just more expensive. 🤣. The good news is that in phase 5 you will be tempted by mid tier watches but you won’t buy them because they will cut into your next Rolex/Omega/Tudor fix.
This is all true but unless you can afford a $2k+ watch I wouldn't buy one. Even still, I can buy a $2k+ watch but I can't imagine wearing one in my daily life, it's so out of place to have something that expensive on my wrist. I'd say find the one or two quality watches in your price range and go for those. For me, around $500 is probably the most in comfortable with wearing.
What a coincidence! I used to collect guitars and watches! Unfortunately had to sell everything in the past couple of months...but will rebuilt both collections! Greetings from Brazil!
Indeed sounds familiar. I think the phases sometimes even return, but surely the path usually goes up the price tag - maybe until you realize that satisfaction in life does not correspond with your watch collection. Only thing I disagree on is the fact that you need to own a Rolex. If you like them and you have no problem with the image this watch has in many social communities, go for it. If you want to retain value - go for it. If you simply do not like the brand, style or pricetag - buy what you like. There are many nice alternatives for the watch enthusiast.
Just found this and wow you got a lot correct here. But I still like the affordable watches. It lets me play with a lot of different designs and styles with minimal risk. But time will tell.
I started on watches 5 years ago but still I am on phase 2 but not a snob... I am all open to possibilities & I love all kinds of watches even digital watches & homages... dreamed of having a rolex but It is ok if I don't have one.. the key is to be content of what we have.. I am for now very much happy & thankful to God of what I have in my collections.. mostly seiko, casio, tissot & some homages like pagani design... they are all great watches... all watches have their different kinds of market especially when it comes to a person's budget... I have casio f91w & a168 & i love them...
Well that was slightly.......uncomfortable viewing 🤣. Pretty much nailed it in one for most of us. Subscribed. About to pull the trigger on a 39mm blue dial Maurice Lacroix Aikon, and while I know I could take some of the advice here and hang onto that cash and put it toward something more expensive, the Aikon has just been calling to me and I can't get it out of my damn head!! Curses on this confounded hobby 😂
That was hilarious! Even had my wife laughing along...... it describes my journey fairly accurately. Take homes; Get a Rolex asap (made a difference to my watch view once I did - i'm now 2 coming on 3 deep). Save up for the watches you really want (and take the time to understand what that truly is), aim high, bide your time and have patience - 'placeholders' are a waste of money In the long run.
I am, I’ve just reviewed the King Turtle and new Alpinist, but I feel like Seiko and GS are becoming too gimmicky and repetitive so I’ve hit the breaks to focus on the big prize, a possible Patek 5164 in the future. You see how the escalation goes...
I’m glad you have kept your Seiko Shogun , was thinking of selling mine to release a little bit of cash for a mint Omega seamaster 2254.50 Automatic black with sword hands on speedmaster bracelet , but think I might miss the Shogun & it’s comfortable feel on wrist ? All your videos are very interesting & educational - thank you
I’m glad I avoided the accumulation phase. I seen a luxury watch and saved hard to get it and from then on only bought mid tier so I don’t really have any disposable watches.
Blaine Cole Well I change my mind time to time, but my feeling is that Rolex makes great, but overpriced, watches. I *might* buy one someday, but will continue exploring others brands, first.
great vid and indicative of what im going through. you'll laugh but ive started collecting vintage timex as i get to scratch the itch without it hitting my pocket. ive also got some seiko and hamilton as youve mentioned as my more "premium" pieces. im also looking at some icons like the accutron spaceview and computron by bulova as even in the luxury space theres nothing like them. i had planned to work up to a hamilton intramatic however am now wondering if thats cose enough to something more premium like an omega or possibly low end rolex for me to wait another 6 months to save... ultimately im not a man of means but i expect to be able to trade up to around £3k by cashing in the Timex ive fixed up. its just going to take a while lol.
Thanks for watching and sharing what you enjoy collecting. Hamilton produces proper quality. Personally I wish I had skipped that brand though and held off for a Rolex Datejust but that’s in hindsight. Maybe a used Omega is the right in-between?
Hi Uptickwatchreviews! How do you related this video with the those where you shows your Maurice Lacroix Aikon? (specially the 2nd video). I mean, do you think that to buy a Maurice Lacroix Aikon could be also a mistake? Because on that video you said that you maybe could even prefer the ML than your Omega Aquaterra, so... I was wondering if the ML Aikon would be a wrong/stupid option or if it is really a watch that values its money. What do you think about it? Do you think that, instead of buying a ML Aikon would be better saving for a Omega, Rolex, Hublot or... Any of those more expensive luxury watches? Thank you very much in advance for your anwswer and keep the good working that your are doing by making this videos! :)
I can’t deny I enjoy my Rolexes a little out of snobbery. With the Aikon, snobbery is out the window as it’s clearly not as luxurious and hyped as AP. I can enjoy it purely out of pleasure, just because it fits me. There’s a certain jubilation to own something just because it pleases you. Having said that, I’m sure tons of people by now love the Aikon and other ML models. They do things right and nothing in their products feels cheap, not even in terms of accuracy. That also is refreshing in a climate of overpriced steel sport watches.
Pretty accurate. My version was slightly different, as my wishlist goes from $150-$65,000. Since I’ve made this a hobby, last month, I’ve bought 6 watches with $2600 being the most expensive. Fingers crossed I don’t regret any 🤞🏾😩
The conclusions are for the most part, true. I should’ve bought the Rolex right away instead of buying and selling a bunch of Tissot, seikos and vintage omega.
Fuuuuuck. You just killed most of my love for watches, saved me few months of life and about 5K $ in Seikos. Thanx. P.S. I laso believe that Archie and TVG are different sides of the same coin.
The shot fired at T&H at the end made me laugh! Well done.

Scary accurate. Diesel was my daily, always wanted a Bond seamaster for 25 years. Sticker shock and then researched used. Where I differ, I saved up and bought my seamaster brand new from an AD. Now looking at moonwatch and why else to get without going crazy on price :)
Thanks to you I bought the sarx055 and I consider it an entry level luxury watch.
Nefff It definitely is a little stunner that is a bit more relaxed for everyday wear than the GS Snowflake.
Best watch video on YT. Cheers.
Stuck in phase 3 here...
Hey, thanks for one of the best watch videos to come along in awhile!!
I love your wisdom almost as much as your vicious remarks!
I was late to the party, but this is bang on the money. 🤣 Great channel.
Thanks for stopping by, we’ve got beer, Rolex and even the occasional HK riot on this channel.
Great video. You're spot on!
The reality of this makes me laugh so much!!!😅
Good video!
Bravo 🙌!!! You understand the illness is there a cure??
Olá, thanks for watching! Get yourself one good axe and one good watch and rock on!
This was spot on😂👌🏽 exactly happened like clockwork
This is so so true! 😎 I'm now consolidating my collection.
Great video pal, a journey thai we all know well. The funny thing is that you can repeat those phases 2/3 times and not get bored!
Fantastic video. Almost at the just buy a Rolex phase..almost 👌🏻😁😎
Just found this and wow you got a lot correct here. But I still like the affordable watches. It lets me play with a lot of different designs and styles with minimal risk. But time will tell.
Hilarious, but very insightful too. Thanks.
Well said Sir. Been through most of it.
Spot on.
Hey there. Given that you have many luxury watches, you still are buying Seikos? Are you compartmentalizing seikos as separate categories?
I am, I’ve just reviewed the King Turtle and new Alpinist, but I feel like Seiko and GS are becoming too gimmicky and repetitive so I’ve hit the breaks to focus on the big prize, a possible Patek 5164 in the future. You see how the escalation goes...
@@UptickWatchReviews thanks. I actually bought 2 GS in the past 6 months. A bit regretting not listening to the advice and go straight for a Rowlex
Sometimes you gotta scratch that itch. With everyone praising GS you’d eventually wanna try one even if you got a Rolex.
All your videos are very interesting & educational - thank you
I love Archie's Alpinist video. :)
I’m glad I avoided the accumulation phase. I seen a luxury watch and saved hard to get it and from then on only bought mid tier so I don’t really have any disposable watches.
I am still struggling with Rolex; not about buying one, just what to think about them.
Blaine Cole That is also one of the phases of watch collecting.
@@eyeheartsushi2212 ; I would be interested in knowing if you have resolved this issue.
Blaine Cole Well I change my mind time to time, but my feeling is that Rolex makes great, but overpriced, watches. I *might* buy one someday, but will continue exploring others brands, first.
@@eyeheartsushi2212: I cannot disagree with that. Cheers.
Blaine Cole Cheers and all the best on your watch journey.
After all I pulled the side brake and I came back to my Seiko sumo with the engineer bracelet from strapcode!
Happiness is somewhere else.
I feel personally attacked by this video.
Great and very accurate video 👍
great vid and indicative of what im going through. you'll laugh but ive started collecting vintage timex as i get to scratch the itch without it hitting my pocket. ive also got some seiko and hamilton as youve mentioned as my more "premium" pieces. im also looking at some icons like the accutron spaceview and computron by bulova as even in the luxury space theres nothing like them. i had planned to work up to a hamilton intramatic however am now wondering if thats cose enough to something more premium like an omega or possibly low end rolex for me to wait another 6 months to save... ultimately im not a man of means but i expect to be able to trade up to around £3k by cashing in the Timex ive fixed up. its just going to take a while lol.
Thanks for watching and sharing what you enjoy collecting. Hamilton produces proper quality. Personally I wish I had skipped that brand though and held off for a Rolex Datejust but that’s in hindsight. Maybe a used Omega is the right in-between?
Loved the transition into patek haha
So true.... Its the madness that grows - you don't need those watches, but its a case of 'got to have it'. What are people trying to prove?
They should show this in high schools
Pretty accurate. My version was slightly different, as my wishlist goes from $150-$65,000. Since I’ve made this a hobby, last month, I’ve bought 6 watches with $2600 being the most expensive. Fingers crossed I don’t regret any 🤞🏾😩
The conclusions are for the most part, true. I should’ve bought the Rolex right away instead of buying and selling a bunch of Tissot, seikos and vintage omega.
Awesome.
Ha ha! Funny and true! Rolex and Seiko all the way for me too. Oh and Grand Seiko, Omega, Panerai, JLC, Breguet...
Great video! Everything is on point, mon amis :-)
Fuuuuuck. You just killed most of my love for watches, saved me few months of life and about 5K $ in Seikos. Thanx. P.S. I laso believe that Archie and TVG are different sides of the same coin.
Does anyone know the model number for the watch at 6:33?
I do ;-) It’s SNKK59K1. See the review here:

@@UptickWatchReviews thanks!
So true! I went thru all of these!
Sounds pretty spot on lol
Absolutely spot on!
Thanks for the great content!
Is the Polish letter in the video title intentional or a result of your French keyboard?
Bernhard Koenig Oh I thought it was dust on my screen! Haha. I’ll fix this (although it looks pretty cool).
omg this is hypnosis at the end it made me want to quit watches until i broke out of the trance that is
I like this guy.
Great video! Phase 5er here lol
On point 👍
Tell us more about your guitars.
Eric P P I’ve actually made a few videos about guitars paired with watches!
This is genius and 100% true
