      One thing I’m still a little confused about: should the fish that are herbivores eat molluscs, crustaceans, fish meal etc? My mbuna fish food seems to contain some of those too as well as spirullina and vegetable matter.

    • @PULAG
      @PULAG ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thepurpletortoise5794 Mbuna main diet is more vegetation based which is strange considering they don't have many plants in the natural habitat.

    I know you are speaking on mbuna's but OB Peacocks are some popular fish and are not frowned upon. They are hybrids.

      Exactly, so are flowerhorns. Frankly, the hybrid argument/guilt trip is asinine.

    Hybrids happen in the wild 2 ! It's a natural thing. Just cause the fish is diffrent dosent mean its not natural!

      @@saltyryan8280 One happens naturally, in a chaotic complex natural eco-system and the other is in a very small, human-controlled ecosystem. It's not "natural" because a human decided which fish would go together.
      If you're happy with your hybrids, that's fine. But many people get discouraged when they find out that they were sold hybridized Mbunas. They are usually more aggressive and less colorful. Why would you want that, if you can get a beautifully colored pure-bred one.

    Good stuff. Subscribed. Honestly I keep different Mbunas together in my 75g. I just don't sell or trade the Hybrids. I let them live their lives if they survive.

    Can you Please tell me the name of the type of Mbuna at 3:25 in your video.. I have 2 of these but do not know the name of them.. Sometimes there will be fish listed as "Assorted African Cichlids" especially at the big box stores.. I really do not like buying from those places, but I have when their tanks and fish look healthy and well kept.. I just ordered some Labidochromis caeruleus (Yellow Labs) from a very reputable breeder in Florida.. I have never purchased fish over the internet before, but I am giving it a shot..

    I liked this video though I pronounce mbuna as ma-buna but my only complaint is: I think hybrids should not be sold from a store but I would never presume to tell another human being what he should or do with his (this means he's too) property.but it is your blog to do as you, not I, wish. All these fish live together in the same lake and the variety we have came to be due to interbreeding (as nature intended), stop the hybrid fear mongering. Do you feel the same way about humans?

  • @RiversToReefs

    Great information, but I strongly disagree with your stance on hybrid fish. I have never seen any credible evidence that suggests hybrids are more aggressive than purebreds. Additionally, hybrids can be just as, if not more, beautiful. The only issue concerning hybrids is people selling hybrids as purebreds. This of course, is wrong, and certainly should be frowned upon. However, if you source your fish from a respected breeder, you would never run into this issue. I feel that it is a great disservice to the hobby to tell people what fish they can and can’t enjoy and/or keep, so long as the fish is cared for properly.

    • @RiversToReefs
      @RiversToReefs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean absolutely no disrespect, but they way you talked about hybrids just sounds like fear-mongering. You said that some fish stores sell hybrids as “hybrid cichlids” like it’s a bad thing. That’s exactly what they should be doing if they are selling hybrids. That’s textbook hybrid selling etiquette. Like I said, I mean no disrespect to you but you have failed to mention a single absolute explanation of why hybrids are so “bad”. I feel that this sort of “hybrids are bad” fear-mongering if far more damaging to the hobby than hybrid cichlids could ever be.

    4 or more sounds good when they're young. But as they mature they get even more aggressive. Therefore, there should be at least 15 fish in there. The more Mbuna, the less stress on the least dominant fish that gets pretty much bullied and chased by eveeyone else.

    I just set up a 75 gallon mbuna aquarium and I tried to get less aggressive mbuna. I went with 4 groups of 7 species. They are all 1" -2" juveniles. I went for lower aggression and a good diversity of color. Here are the groups:
    Pseud. acei
    Labidochromis caeruleus
    Iodotropheus sprengerae ''Rusty"
    Chindongo socolofi
    The Chindongo socolofi are the largest but don't seem aggressive at all. Eventually they will be the smallest species in there so it is probably good they have a bit of a head start. I am looking forward to watching them all grow. They are already fun to watch.

      That can either be
      - unhealthy cheap food that doesn't fill them up.
      - Age
      - Females that breed a lot get skinny
      - parasites due to poor water quality

    This is first video I have viewed from your channel ... You are quite informative, I get it when you say that as an aquarium hobbyist it's up to us to keep the species pure I would like to know your opinion on hybrid fishes like parrot fish and flowerhorn . Thank you

    • @QuebecCichlides
      @QuebecCichlides  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They're not my favorite, but I honestly don't mind it as much as if somebody does random mixes in their tanks and then tries to sell them off as pure breds.
      Parrots and Flowerhorns were professionally "created" in a controlled environment.

My tank boss is a large Hongi and I think they could be his ...or they are the offspring of the lone afra cobue...my yellow lab females seem to be the ones who have the hybrid fry....the hybrid fry are dark blue with darker stripes..there's probably 5 or 6 hybrid fry in there - maybe more as I have a lot of rocks. I have never sold or given any away. I'm a bit of a softy. If a fry is smart enough to survive then I will try and give it a good life. Hi,
    Hope you are fine. I am from India.I love Mbunas and fond of your TH-cam Channel. I have a 60 gallons tank and have Jalo Reef(3 "), Mengano(3.5"), Cobue(4"), Flavus(3.5"), Demasoni(3.5"), Albino Greshakei (4"),Neon Spot(3"), Thumbi West (4") ,Kenyii (3.5") each .All are male.My tank's age is 60 days.Since last few days Albino dominates in tank.And since last two days I noticed Demasoni and Flavus are badly injured, then I separated the two and kept them in a small tank.But when I again introduce them to the large tank,the others are attacking the two and again I kept them in small tank. I am using all Seachem products in my tank,changing water in every week, using one top filter, one Hang on back filter, and one Sponge filter since the very first day.
    Please help me how I can get rid of this agression. I can't find the cause.
    Thanking you

    @quebeccichlides I have a 90 gallon Cichlid tank and have a few questions.
    1) I have 35 Mbunas, 1 Jewel and 1 Plecostomus. Is that going to be too many fish for my tank?
    2) can I add some catfish, Peacocks and a Giraffe?
    3) with this many fish how often should I change the water? I’ve been doing about a 30% change once a month.
    4) Two weeks ago I added a dozen live plants. So far they’ve completely destroyed two of them. Should I give up on plants or will they eventually leave them alone?
    5) I have a Rio 2500 submergible pump, I would like to know if you can recommend a battery back up that will keep my pump running in case power goes out when I’m not home?

    I'm glad you dealt with the issue of bastardized species. One African Cichlid specialist store in the states had an online discussion with his clients and most of them concluded that it was OK to cross the species, not dispose of them as the "humane" thing to do and resell them.
    Probably the most aggrieved area, more so than the Mbunas, is with the Aulnocara (Peacocks) species. It's very rare to find a classic Red Shoulder Peacock in good color these days, but there are plenty of nondescript blue ones out there with made up names. Private sellers try to enhance sales by offering "new" species that really aren't. It drives me nuts.

      Hi Pal, Thanks for your comment.
      Hybridization is a subject not talked about enough and not taken seriously enough.
      I often get new clients who show me their "beautiful" tank that's full of hybrids. When I tell them, they always have a disappointed look on their faces. They don't have "real" african cichlids :(

    I have found all your videos so helpful. Im limited due to space but what would be better for yellow labs and maingano's... A 40 breeder or a 55? I know the 40 actually has more surface space while the 55 is taller. Which one do you think would be better? And how many can I stock in it? And last question... If they're juveniles, how long can I keep them in the tank before having to upgrade them to a larger tank? Thank you so much!

    Dear Richelle, Thank you for your videos - I love them!
    I have two questions about aragonite substrate 1-2 or 2-3mm size:
    - Will mbunas be capable to sift it through their gills?
    - Is it ok to plant plants in this substrate?

    I would like to help with the aquascape, the only problem however I have moved away from Aulonocara and went more towards Mbuna. But I might be doing another Aulonocara set up in the near future.
    I Subscribed to your awesome channel.
    The food I give to the Mbuna and Haplochromis is: Ocean Nutrition Cichlid Vegi Flakes.
    I have one question: What Brand of food do you give the Mbuna Cichlids?
    Thank you for sharing.

    Hi, I'm Tony from the Philippines. Just want to ask if it's ok if I have 1 mbuna fish together with a group of tiger barbs? Would that be ok? Example: 1 Yellow Lab with a group of Tiger Barbs. Would they attack the Yellow Lab? Would my Yellow Lab lose its color?

    • @QuebecCichlides
      @QuebecCichlides  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Tony, Keep african cichlids with african cichlids. The Yellow lab will destroy your barbs, on top of not being healthy from living in the wrong water parameters

      @QuebecCichlides  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there. You just gave me a great idea for a video ;)
      Demasoni are mouth brooders. Check out my video about sexing african cichlids.
      I have a video in there of females holding (4:39):
      th-cam.com/video/qK7qmn1NLfA/w-d-xo.html
      Enjoy!
      P.S. it's hard to sex demasoni. I have a colony and some specimens that I thought were male just started holding yesterday....so definitely female. Yay!

    • @QuebecCichlides
      @QuebecCichlides  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rea. African cichlids are best kept with african cichlids because of their behavior and required water parameters ;)
      If you like these, you can start an Mbuna specific tank. You only need 30+ gallons for certain species.

    Hi Richelle, i love mbunas compared to haps and peacock. I have a 4 feet tank coming soon, my question to you is, can I keep 20-30 small size mbunas, but only one of each species? For example, one yellow lab, one demasoni, one socolofi, one callainos etc. Thanks!

    • @QuebecCichlides
      @QuebecCichlides  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Ayis,
      I would advise against it. Keep them in groups of 4 or more for a more harmonious tank

    I am new to your channel and so glad I found it. Your videos I have seen thus far are all awesome. I have been debating whether or not to go down this path. I only have space for a 30 gallon tank and I see a lot of conflicting info about Mbuna, Would you recommend the Universal Holey Rock as a good aquascape for them to help control aggression? I really like the look of that and I would also plan to add some individual rocks and/or caves with maybe a few artificial plants. I have never seen the hanging plants you reference but I love that idea. Your thoughts are very much welcome and appreciated.
