  • Our talking pet magpie is truly amazing. He totally surprised us when we first heard him say peach come here. We never knew that magpies could mimic speech but Pie is such a character and also very fascinating.

One of the most fascinating things to me about bird mimicry is that they copy *exactly* what they hear; right down to the acoustics of a room where they learned a sound. It's not that they understand "oh this sound should echo" but more a testament to just how versatile their vocal system is, and how detailed their retention of sound.

Honestly, considering the fact that magpies, nonetheless, all Corvids are extremely intelligent, there is a decent chance they understand what they are saying, they may be able to use the actual concept of language and recognize that the word apple refers to the little red fruit they like to eat.

This is so precious ~ I'd love to have regular chats with a gorgeous magpie! I've heard of a magpie in Yorkshire in the north of England (where the locals have a very distinctly gentle, laid back and friendly-sounding accent), who sits on a bench in town saying to passers-by "'Ey-oop dearie, y'alright, luv?". Her voice is that of a kind old lady, and some people happily stop and chat to her, whereas others have difficulty working out where the words are coming from, and get a bit freaked out when they realise it's a talking bird!

Oh wow, my colleague's African Grey (who I'm very friendly with and see every day, because I work in my colleague's home office) does exactly the same. My colleague had really bad bronchitis when he first brought Oliver the Grey home, causing some really painful, nasty-sounding hacking chesty coughing fits. Of course, Oliver learned to mimic those coughs perfectly, and now, two years later, he still performs them in all their gory detail for anyone who'll stick around to listen!
I've often heard my colleague have to explain to visitors "no, my parrot isn't gravely sick, he just learned to mimic those coughs from when I had bronchitis. From how gruesome they sound, you probably think I'm a chain smoker, or have a horrible lung disease, but no, I'm very healthy now!"

Love your show. I rescued a baby magpie in Frontier Saskatchewan in1962. Cared for it for the summer. Let him go in the fall and he returned in the spring and flew to me for a last goodbye. Your show brought tears to my eyes. This spring I rescued a crow that fell out of his cage. I kept him well for 6 weeks but his parents wouldn't leave and squawked all day long swooping sown on us whenever we were outside. When his feathers all came in I released him to be with his family. What a cool, affectionate bird he was. He hung around with his parents for a couple months and I think I saw him again this morning. Thanks for the great show.

My great aunt had an African Grey and a dog, and whenever the dog was being a nuisance in the kitchen where the parrot liked to hang out, she’d say “Get outta the kitchen Charlie!” and he’d high tail it. He’d also come when called. The parrot figured out the words were what did it and would crack itself up saying from the kitchen “Come here Charlie!” And the second it got there it would shout “Get outta kitchen Charlie!” And it’d bolt like always.

They didn't know they could do human speech until a few years in, when it yelled cuss words! Karen yelling at her dogs, lol. 😄💖✌️🎃

I don't know how but a Magpie came in the house through the Cat Door. He spent the first day hiding. I kept thinking there's a Bird in the House. Then I'd say no that's no possible. He came out the next day. It took me taking the screen off the window, serving him breakfast and managed to slowly get him out the window. It was so cool. My intuition kept telling me there was a Bird but I just couldn't believe it. They are much smarter than we give them credit for.

Where I am in the USA it is against the law to keep wild animals like that as pets. I had a baby squirrel once a couple of summers ago. I had to call in a rehab person to come to get him.
I am glad though, I did not have anything to really help him at the time but to provide a safe and warm place till it was time to go. to a better home with a mother squirrel who had already had some babes.

I cant believe how many more words and phrases pie has learned since i last watched some of your vids. Such an intelligent bird.

I had a couple of magpies living in a tree in my yard. Rarely saw them, but I had Nokia text message sounds coming from the tree all summer long... And I think they must have been the ones leaving shiny, little gifts for me on the hood of my car. A broken ear ring I'd never seen before stands out as the most remarkable one. Amazing birds!

Magpies are so smart! Their ability to mimick human speech is truly amazing. Pie sounds so much like his mom. It's absolutely adorable!🥰

The two together is the craziest thing I've ever seen! The magpie: "get ready for bed" to the other bird! He even mimics the cage sound! WAW. Then she mocks your laugh!

What an amazingly smart little creature. He really makes you wonder just how wrong we might be on
the intelligence of other species. He's tiny, his brain mass is far smaller than even a cat but look at what he can do! Thank you for sharing :). He talks up a storm but it left me speechless lol.

While you have point, purportionality means a lot more. Corvids are smarter than cats, they're in same tier as great apes, dolphins, and elephants.

      @davidamajako961 4 ปีที่แล้ว

And thats where the mistake goes. Its not only about the mass, its about the brain itself.
A guy above 2 meters has a bigger brain because he is bigger but has the same brain. Doesnt make him smarter other than depending on his genes and experiences

    • @LucidDreamn

Their brain to body ratio is very big actually comparable to chimps and a little smaller than humans. Meaning they have very big brains for their size they probably are smarter than us in some ways

Brain size as a ratio to body is a better indicator of intellegence than actual size.

Ohhhhh, I just LOVE your little Pie 💕🐦...... I have a European Starling, which I rescued as a baby bird. I called him Jackson. He talks a lot. He also says "Goodnight sleep tight".... His vocabulary is incredible (Eastern Cape, South Africa ❤️🌍)
