White City used to be sketchy and trailer park city, but is starting to clean up because east Medford is so expensive. Gold Hill is just poor, but still fun. Cave Junction is just depressing and stuck in the 80s, and not in a good way. Agreed, Cave Junction/Illinois Valley has always been "Pot Central". My family lived on a small farm in Glendale for 10 Yrs. All was well until the Oregon Government got into the pot business. Both farms around me were sold to pot growers, who were ex-falons from California. I called he sheriff more then seven times regarding crimes occurring, yet they never responded. The growers ran me off the road once, and shot out the rear window of my truck once, yet no law enforcement ever responded. We sold the farm, to a drug dealer, for half the recorded value. My wife was raised in Cave Junction. It was a drug city way back in the 60's. In one year there were 7 unsolved murders, one being a relative. Your lecture was spot on, thank you.

Most agents don't warn people about this kind of thing. I've lived in Southern Oregon since 1976. West Medford and White City are crime hubs. Williams and Wolf Creek and a few other places are chock full of hippies and pot
farms. Sam's Valley is dry and has one store. There are beautiful places here but there's places i wouldn't buy property.

Yeah, let's continue to bash West Medford. Honestly the "bad" pockets are relatively few and far between. If the city would stop dumping on us and allowing organizations like the Gospel Mission to be located across the street from a school, the number of bad apples would decrease significantly. But hey, most folks throughout Medford including the city council like to manifest this area as the "ghetto" of Medford. The potential here is amazing, and most given streets in West Medford could be transplanted to the railroad district in Ashland and they would fit in. There's actually worse pockets with more crime on the "East Side." It would be cool if folks would stop with the lies about the West Side, and help us realize the true potential of a historical part of town.

I expected CJ to be on the list, but not number one. I live here and can tell you it wasn't always like this. The main problems are meth, alcohol and homelessness. There are incredibly beautiful swimming holes, camping and gold mining galore. Tourists fall in love with the "Eight Dollar" area. There's a Tiger Conservation park, the Caves Monument and Selma's swinging bridge canyon is spectacular. Our section of the Illinois River is the Chinook salmon spawning beds every October. • @vaughnslavin9784
    @vaughnslavin9784 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Concerning Cave Junction and the Illinois Valley, we're ok with the "wild west" designation. When I moved here 45 years ago, the city had a police department, the Sheriffs office was fully staffed , the forest service had a full crew and forest rangers. Two local lumber mills provided family wage supporting jobs, and timber receipts that helped fund the county. Tourism never replaced the loss of jobs caused by shutting off timber sales and the resulting mill closures. Millions of timber dollars were lost that funded much of the county government including law enforcement. The running joke in our rural areas is, the only millionaires here are people who moved here with 2million. Our last sheriff ran his election with the promise that he could run the department with the funds available. Fast forward to said sheriff laying off everyone and advertising on national news that he was the only law enforcement in Josephine County. Well criminals, look who's open for business! You can blame tax payers for not voting for funding, but you would be blaming people who lost their jobs directly or indirectly with the crushing of the timber industry. Our current Sheriff Dave Daniel is out standing and has put a major dent in crime. With tax payer approved funding coming at the end of this year, we're happy campers. With JMET busting illegal grows left and right, life has improved considerably. Nothing to do here? This area is the rugged outdoors with all the inconveniences that can come from rural living. It is also an incredibly beautiful area if you put down your phone, crawl from in front of your TV and go exploring. Glendale, Wolf Creek, Williams and the Illinois Valley all share this "wild west" label, and we're ok with that.

I left Oregon. I’m from the mid-west and moved back to California. Im moved from west coast 20 years ago. Was sold a lie. Beautiful place to live but the people and culture backward and why I moved back to the Bay Area. Too many racists, especially from the locals that are generational locals . I’m a realist and can accept no place is perfect. In Medford and Grants pass people are openly racist and say ignorant statements. It was the first place my 5 year old experienced racism from other kids. Many locals hate outsiders and can be very rude. Assholes aren’t just in California, as a mid-western manners matter. Smaller towns don’t always have friendly people. The cultural and educational resources just didn’t fit what was best for my family. Kids should grow up not having to defend their racial background or existence. And I’m white and my kids are mixed. My biggest mistake was not taking the time to check how the local culture would affect my children.

I'm always blown away when I read things like this. Not because I don't believe your story but because talking to other people they have a wildly different experience. My girl is black and has told me she's never had any racial issues. One of my best friends said the same thing. I even remember checking in with the head of our HR dept at work during the height of BLM to see how she was feeling. I asked her if she ever had any problems with the cops here. She just laughed at me and said last time she got pulled over going 20 over the speed limit they didn't even give her a warning. I was kinda pissed because I'm a white dude and have been pulled over 9 times and the worst thing I ever did was go 10 over the limit. 😂
It's insane how people in the same cities can have totally different experiences when it comes to something like racism.

Have lived in Medford since 2009 on the East side and agree with you're depiction of the area. On the negative side, I would add that the poorly located airport / planes landing + flying overhead greatly affect the livability of some sections of Medford. On the positive side - traffic (while getting heavier) is still pretty darn good / easy to get to all parts of Southern Oregon.

Yep. The locals call Medford, Methford. It’s gotten bad over the years, but wherever you have meth and opioid use, you’re going to have crime. Grants pass had one of the highest levels of opioid overdoses per capita in the country.
And, you don’t get addicts to change by co-signing their addiction as that recent law did. Get a dui or possession charge, it should be jail or rehab. Get busted again, lose your drivers license, spend a longer time in rehab or jail. Worked well in Santa Clara county Ca where I was a MH therapist for years.

Southern oregon has lost its identity.

If you don’t take Williams off the list I’m never watching your channel ever ever ever again! JK. For real though I have a beef with you. Yeah there’s a lot of pot growing, it’s not a problem unless you go trespassing. It’s a half hour drive to GP but it’s a beautiful country road drive. Ace hardware and Hidden Valley market are 12 miles away in Murphy. The Apple Gate valley is 6 miles down the hill, just a short drive to all the wineries. Plaisance Ranch & Winery right here in town, grass fed beef, wine and music in the summer. Hiking trails to the top of Grayback mountain if you got the legs built for that. I can cruise my quad to the country store for a 12 pack of beer. 🍻 Country living.👍🏻

I count my blessings to have grown up in Southern Oregon, but when I return now to visit family I'm a bit disappointed. There's incredible natural beauty, but as you mentioned local support for basic municipal services has clearly reduced safety and general quality of life for most. That said, most anywhere you choose to live has benefits and drawbacks. The subjective question we all need to ask is, "Are the positive attributes so good that I can tolerate the downsides?"

Wolf Creek, Sams Valley, Glendale, Cave Junction are considered 'rural'. Since the hospital was built in Grants Pass, many California retired folks moved there as real estate i.e. house prices were relative cheap! Grants Pass has the rich who likes to live by the Rogue River and then the poor then the homeless who camps at the park. I like that. Anyway, if you love cops so much, then YOU should fund them. Leave the rest of us alone. Some of us are not so thrilled at some of the shady things cops do, such as civil asset forfeiture. And guess what, there is car theft in Portland too.

As a retired health care provider, Covid was not crap. It’s a new heavily mutating virus whose job is to find hosts to live in. It doesn’t care about your politics, your ignorance, your rights, what church you attend, its job is to survive, period. Don’t talk to me about your bullshit about your medical rights, not under a pandemic.
Where I worked before I retired out it was mandatory for me to get a flu shot every year, to be evaluated for tb every year, to get hepatitis B and C shots at ten year intervals, And wear a mask under Covid. That was to,protect me and patients from getting sick.
Those people who worked in health care and didn’t comply, should not have been in health care to begin with and I’m happy they lost their jobs for not doing what the basics of medicine requires to protect patients and staff.
I complied with all of that because I cared about my patients and their welfare as well as my own. What I have a problem with is the stupidity of people who know nothing about virus assuming they won’t get it. My colleagues had the most problems helping people who said they couldn’t have covid because it was a hoax, or refused to take the jab because they would die. How ignorant can anyone be. My colleagues got tired of all the grief they got while trying to save lives and some retired out or became roving nurses and docs.
The reality is Americans really don’t care about our people, are selfish and believe everything the right wing misinformation media tells them. They have grown increasingly anti science and anti medical that is until you need medical help to survive and then you want medicine to save your behind. We are the only developed country without universal health care for all its citizens because that’s socialism. No, it’s called taking of your people. We largely don’t care.
