  • Installing Pistons on the DIY Aluminum Race Cabinets: The Unexpected Challenge! This week we finish up the aluminum welding and fabrication on the lower cargo trailer race cabinets. Unfortunately I had some setbacks when it came time to install the gas struts on the lower cabinet door. In this episode i show you how I adjust MIG welder settings and how i work through obstacles when things don't go as planned.

    Nice tip on the painters tape scratch prevention. It's comforting to see you switch gears and plans when you come across an obstacle like the ram pistons. As for the door not wanting to close tightly, I was going to suggest alternating the pop-rivets so that they don't hit head-to-head but it seems like you don't have the problem anymore. The magnets seem like a good /simple idea to keep the doors open but Jerry Payne brought up a good point about them collecting all the metallic dust. I'm enjoying the series of your Race Cabinet build.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats actually a good point about the metal dust. I will probably just end up putting a small piece of velcro and calling it good. That door will likely never get opened often if at all.

    G’day from Down Under. The cabinet is really coming together. Life is full of compromise. The sign of a good Tradesman is how well they overcome issues when they appear and how well they can fix their mistakes. I like your solution to the problem with the gas strut the magnet should work well, it also allows better access to the lower cabinet. Sometime we tend to over think things and over complicate our projects. I think you wont regret your decision.

      @militaryvehiclemarkings4696 Boy there is a LOT of truth in that! "Sometime we tend to over think things and over complicate our projects". Spot on! I find as I get older I want to find an easy solution. When I was younger I would have messed with this for DAYS just to find a way and it really wouldn't have benifitted me other than to say "I did it". ...meanwhile I could be out making money doing something fun LOL.

    I bought a package of strong rare earth magnets from a big box store, that are mounted in a plastic shroud with a small 1/2” long bolt in the back to mount onto things exactly like your working with (1/8” alumin). They come in a couple sizes and strengths. Just thought i’d throw that out to you. The project is coming along nicely! Can’t wait to see the actual install. Thanks Brandon!

    Great video again Brandon. There are plenty of options like lid support brackets and spring loaded hinges for the strut issue, but the ones I've seen will only give you a 90 degree swing. If you want 180 degrees the magnets might be a good solution if you can get them to work thru the aluminum. If you put the magnets outside of door they will likely collect a lot of metallic dust since you will be using it as a mobile welding shop. Can't wait to see how it comes out.

    • @BrandonLund

      Thanks man @PilotMcbride It looks like they are touching but they actually have about 2mm clearance. Basically my hinge is set too deep and it's getting hung up on the sides. I should have mounted the hinge first then bumped the sides to it and taked them on. Ooops LOL.

    Love to watch the process! Have you considered spot welding the hinge holes at least on the frame side? Understand you wouldn’t do it on the powder coat side. Might make for a smoother installation with rivets on only one side of the hinge. 😁

    I think the idea of having the winch higher makes more sense. I have loaded a lot of motorcycles on trailers with winches and the level of the winch should be 40" - 42" high.

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally agree but it's not really practicle for my application. Rarely if ever will I need to use a winch but I will proably install one just in case it's needed. And even then I will have to build a portable roller because I'm putting some pretty nice flooring in it that I don't want getting damaged by winch cable. That will proabably end up being a build video.

  • @twistedhillbilly6157
    @twistedhillbilly6157 ปีที่แล้ว

    I know you love it when I chime in.. Cleko's wouldn't work on the hinge but they are great for many other situations to test fit and assemble.. If you alternates the placement of the rivets so the heads don't hit each other OR use countersunk rivets, the door would close all the way.. the magnet is a good idea,, If you use a donut style, they are countersunk and can be screwed in place with a flat head machine screw, and just a steel screw head in the frame where you want it to stick to.. Just my 2 cents (3/4 of a cent under the current president)

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks man! @twistedhillbilly6157 The hinge is the same one I used on the other doors. There is about 1mm clearance between them. Basically I mounted the hinge too deep. I should have mounted the hinge first then installed the stops instead of installing the stops first then the hinge. The stops are holding it up on the top edge but it will come out of it.

      @BrandonLund  ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hmmm....magnets to aluminum??? I think not unless you put a small piece of steel to the top door. "Certain metals in their natural states such as aluminium, copper, brass, lead gold, and silver don't attract magnets due to the fact they are weak metals. However, properties including iron and steel can be added to these metals in order to make them magnetic" Other than that, this project looks really good and it will look great and be so useful in the trailer!!! I just love to watch your work and working out problems. If I missed you saying you were going to put a small piece of steel on the upper door, I appologize. Great work and God Bless!!!

    • @BrandonLund
      @BrandonLund  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man! The tool box above that little door is metal so my thoughts were to epoxy or bolt a tiny earth magnet to the door so when it's open it contacts the face of the metal toolbox, but it might collect too much metal dust so I will probably just end up doing the same but with velcro.

    • @jimmacsuga2592
      @jimmacsuga2592 ปีที่แล้ว

      How about a sliding door lock pin? Put the part that hold the slide pin in the inside and the part that accepts the pin when it is slid over on the outside of the cabinet so when the door is open, you can slide the lock mechanism into the receiver. When closed, all you see is the little receiver on the outside. I sent you a picture but it would not come up here.
