    Charlie Spedding made a valiant effort at 21 miles and described this move in his book from first to last. I was to the TV watching our Irish athlete John Treacy running to a magnificent silver medal. The greatest marathon field ever assembled. Lopes was unbeatable on the day pure class.

      I think this is the greatest olympic marathon ever run. The field was stacked and it was right before the african dominance of the sport kicked off. John treacy's run was incredible, as was Charlie spedding's. Lopes was in a different class altogether

    Thank you very much for uploading this memorable Olympic marathon race! Possibly I watched it live on TV back in August 1984, although I cannot remember that for certain anymore. I was 11 years old at the time. Carlos Lopes deserved to win, as a diligent and courageous long-distance runner. The World Cross Country Championships in the spring of 1985 crowned his career. Viva Portugal! I wish a happy, blessed, safe, and positively memorable Easter 2024 to all of you!

      these guys run at almost a sprint for most people
      and they do it for over 2 hrs. - you have to be in top shape to do this.

    • @oenrn
      @oenrn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think it's because he was 29 when he won silver, and 37 here. So he wasn't considered a favourite to win because people thought at 37 he was past his prime, and him winning was a surprise. He proved them wrong.

    • @jimmason8502

      Back in the 70s and 80s you were over-the-hill as a runner if you were 30+. Then again, Lopes had run a 27:17 for 10,000m earlier in the year and won the World XC in 1984 so he was no slouch. But he was not known as a "marathon runner". The sporting press at the time were fixated on the marathon specialists like Salazar, Soh, deCastella, Ikanga et al.
      Lopes put together one of the finest, if not THE finest 18 months of running ever in 1984-85: Two World XC wins, Gold in the Olympic Marathon and a marathon world record of 2:07:12.

      He was not a marathoner as an athlete. This is his 4th marathon and his first win. He had a 2nd place in Rotterdam in 83, and 2 DNF. Lopes said later that if he started to run marathons earlier, his career wouldn't last this long.

    • @stevedynell3330
      @stevedynell3330 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Carlos Lopes was among the favorites in this Olympic marathon, although even many athletics experts expected Australia's Robert de Castella (the defending Commonwealth+World Champion) or Japan's Toshihiko Seko either to win or at least to get a medal. However, de Castella placed 5th and Seko probably faded to the 14th place. Lopes's victory was a hard-earned one, and he deservex it - in the twilight of his long career!

    • @yahow9297
      @yahow9297 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, if wiki on Bill Rodgers is correct, they didn't. You see, Rodgers was a "specialized" marathoner, Lopes was not, he was a mid to long distance runner (5-10km's) and cross country specialist. Lopes and his coach decided consciouslly to run marathons on the 80's with the single purpose to win LA's marathon, his first ever marathon win. Lopes even quit Roterdam's marathon in 84 prior to LA at the 30km's just for preparation. That is probably the reason he was not considered a favorit. Lopes is widely regarded in Portugal as an intelligent not emotional runner, guiding his career metodically, while achieving his main objectives.

    At 5:45 (in the upload), you can see de Castella in the lead group. He takes a drink, then suddenly drops right off out of sight. From what I've read, he actually stopped to take on fluids. From his own personal statement years later, he said he over-trained for this event and became fatigued. I wonder if at this stage, that's where his breaking point occurred?
