Yey! Clicked Liked before you started talking :). The last novel sounds fantastic. Mukherjee's The Live of Others had one of the strongest and most disturbing openings I've ever read. That might be his thing. I loved that book therefore I'm looking forward to reading The state of freedom. And yes Ali Smith for Xmas, i might do just that. Great list Eric, all the best reading in 2018.
Thank you! The Lives of Others also has an amazing (devastating) ending. I think you'd really respond to The State of Freedom with its layered political ideas amidst an engrossing story. I look forward to chatting about books with you more in 2018! 😀
89 books! Your first super power is reading. Writers must dream of someone exactly like you "getting" what they hope they communicate after endless emotional hours of writing and rewriting, of worrying over sentences, and words to convey meaningful stories. But your second super power is communicating to others how wonderful and transformative these writers' books can be. Your reviews are warm and honest and enticing. Really enjoy the number of writers from all over the world you bring to our attention. Read and loved Lincoln in the Bardo, Saunders is a master. Have Joyce Carol Oates' book on my stack as she's phenomenally timely and thought provoking. And just downloaded the Yiyun Li because of your description here. I'd never heard of her before and she sounds excellent, in essays and stories. Will put the rest on my list can't wait to find the hours this winter to stay inside and indulge.
I think we should keep our eye on Kandasamy's novel as it's a good bet to be up for the Women's Prize for Fiction next year! 😉 And I am on TENDERHOOKS waiting for your top books list. 😄
A PORTRAIT OF A WRITER AS A YOUNG WIFE sounds fantastic! I haven’t heard of so many of the books on your list, but that’s why I love it. So many books I can go out and find. And I have been meaning to read Yiyun Li’s book all year. I just need to grab it off my shelf and do it. 😂 Congrats on a great Reading year! 🎉🙌
Don't delay! Li's book will be another one that will be great to read during the winter time. I love hearing about people's lists to find out about books I've missed over the year. Thanks for watching and happy new year! 😀
Tin Man was also one of my favorite books of 2017 - for such a slim novel, it really packs an emotional punch! I loved what you had to say about relationships and how we define them and how we limit ourselves with those circumscribed definitions - it makes me want to go back and read the book again right now!
Another service that discussing the books you've read in a year that you really enjoyed provides is, the chance to introduce the viewer to books and or writers that someone may not have read previously or even heard of. You also help readers who may not have realised that certain books have been published or even written. For example, I wasn't aware that Joyce Carol Oates or Neel Mukherjee had books out last year, as I'd not followed the books that were published last year, except for the Booker Longlist of course, so thank you for letting us all know that these are available and what you like about them. There's several of these that I will therefore be interested in reading thanks to your video. Well done Eric, great review and excellent choice of books.
Happy New Year Eric! I really enjoy these videos it’s great to hear everyone’s favourites. Such small hands sound creeepy I love the cover though. Loved Tin Man it made me weep, I still need to get The Parcel though! I remember your review and this one really stands out. Sara Farizan’s Id you could be mine was my fav this year☺️
Always uplifting to see there is a new Eric video. This was great. I really need to read Small Hands and Winter. I have been trying to do my own list and totally recognise the "just read this book it's fab" syndrome - I always love every book I have just finished! No critical faculties in play. For me definite favourites of 2017 include World without End and The Gustav Sonata. Also Stay with Me, Elmet, The Travelling Cat Chronicles and a lovely quiet book on getting older and loneliness Our Souls at Night. Thank you for your very many great book recommendations in 2017, the quality of my reading has been transformed thanks to your blog/vlog.
We've got a lot of overlap! Great list. I loved Winter even more than Autumn, read it for xmas, can't wait for the next one. Definitely will have to get to Tin Man. Did you see Here Comes the Sun by Nicole Dennis-Benn? It was one of my favourites this year. Or Borne for a fun post-apocalyptic book with a great cover and a flying bear for a bad guy.
I read Tin Man and Lincoln in the Bardo this year and loved them. I felt the same about Tin Man - I wanted to do a review but felt I couldn’t put into words how I felt without spoiling the book and it’s a book that you just can’t spoil for anyone - they must discover it for themselves. Lincoln in the Bardo was told in such a unique way and had so many interesting things to say - a worthy winner of the Booker imo. I added the Yiyun Li memoir to my wishlist - sounds so intriguing and definitely something I’d enjoy. I’m planning on posting my favourite books videos next week if you want to check it out. Lindsi xx
What a joy to find this video in my feed this morning. Winter and Lincoln in the Bardo are certainly on my best books list too. I was blown away by the way they managed to be both experimental and beautifully compassionate. I also really enjoyed The End We Start From and Such Small Hands, although I don’t think they will quite make my best-of list. The ending of Barba’s novel is still haunting me! A State of Freedom is definitely going on my TBR for next year. 😀
So good to hear that. It's weird how it often depends on what mood you're in. I feel like another day reflecting back on some other books I could have changed some of these for others. So many great books out there! I'd be so curious to hear what you think of Mukherjee's novel - I wish it had got more attention this year.
I've watched/read countless reviews of Tin Man, but none have sparked my interest until the one you've provided here. The limitations that our relational categories/ labels create in our experience and expression of love is something that I find myself thinking about fairly often & I would love to hear what this author has to say. Thank you for these recommendations. Happy reading!
So many fascinating books here, and such an amazing mixture. I’m desperate to get to Winter this year, though it’ll definitely be after Christmas now haha. Merry Christmas! :)
Great list and wonderful synopses of each book. Thanks to you, Kamil and Matthew, a few of these are on my TBR. I'm definitely moving State of Freedom closer to the top of the pile.
Look who had a great reading year! I love the best lists time on booktube and it was wonderful to see your top and notice the books you already spoke about on the channel to be even more reassured in the fact that they had a lasting impression on you all year ^^ Merry Christmas, Eric ^^ and wonderful, wonderful 2018 - may the books you read be even better next year
Newbie here. (Via sidebar.) I appreciate that you give some details on the books, not just say, "I loved it!" I enjoyed this video and look forward to more.
Dear Friend, from My Life I Write To You in Your Life sounds really interesting. It's my first time hearing about this book, so will have to snoop around on goodreads to look it up for sure. And I think I'll hop on to the Lincoln in the Bardo train in 2018. A little late - and I must say, I'm a little nervous about the format, but it's been receiving glowing reviews from so many booktubers I watch that....I'll probably inevitably give in..... Great, great video! Really enjoyed how you had different, thoughtful reasons for loving every book. And I liked how there was both fiction and nonfiction in there. I definitely want to read more nonfic next year. One of my favourite books of the year is When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi. "Devastating but hopeful" is an accurate description of this book, too, I think!
I think you'll really connect with Li's book! And it's never too late to jump on the Bardo train. 😁 Don't be daunted by it. I've wanted to read Kalanithi's book - thanks for the prompt! I hope you're doing well!
Great video!!! I’ve read 3 off your list LITB,TT, and SSH. I really want to read Winter!! You’re the first person who has made me want to read it. I can definitely see you liking Ghachar Ghocar!! It was concise, but impactful.
great list eric. i'll start making my after christmas gift list to myself from it! loved lincoln in the bardo...i read it earlier in the year and then again this summer with my bookclub and will be giving it for christmas...i also loved "common ground: encounters with nature at the edges of life" by rob cowan and "voices in the ocean" by susan casey, & "beyond words: what animals think and feel" by carl safina and "the sellout" by paul beatty, and "a tale for the time being" by ruth ozeki.
I was a really big fan of both of those as well! Boyne's novel was so often funny despite a lot of its serious content. And Baume's novel is really an example of the right way to write a character who is unlikeable (at least, she's very off putting whenever she encounters anyone)
Like the sound of these, particularly those that are not known to me, mainly because I wait for the paperbacks. Could I make a plug for my outright favourite read of the year (I've already mentioned it to Kamil)? It's "Confessions" by Jaume Cabre. Translated from the Catalan, it is massive, and to be honest, presents some initial challenges, but it is hugely rewarding and completely immersive. I was tempted to read it again when I finished it. Other than that, many of my favourites this year are not new : On the Road to Babadag and The Sound and the Fury(both Kamil recommendations), Satantango, Autumn, Alias Grace, Stoner, Ferrante's Naples novels, Solar Bones, Guapa and as a sort of linked novel to that, Season of Migration to the North.
Just found your channel and I've already got so many recommendations from your explanation of the books you read!! I'm getting my hands on A Book Of American Martyrs!! Very topical in Ireland at the moment as we're gearing up to vote on Abortion policy this year!! Going to pick up both The Parcel and The Ministry of Utmost Happiness. We've very different reading tastes and I'm glad I found you because I need to read more diversely this year! My best is up on my channel but it's mostly fantasy books XD
Hey, nice to meet you and thanks for watching. yes, I've been following the news about the issue of abortion in Ireland and read & seen some really powerful responses to it. That's great you're expanding your tastes. It's hard not to get caught up reading similair things if you love them.
I want to read Tin Man so bad, I need to get my hands on it soon. Winter comes out in 2018 for us - i will certainly be picking it up as soon as possible.
I've had a pretty strong reading year. I have read 21 five star books so far. Trying to make a top10 would mean leaving out over half of those reads. And I'm currently reading, 'The Hummingbirds Daughter' by Luis Alberto Urrea, and it's on the 5 star trajectory as well if it keeps up. I also recently read Tin Man and it overwhelmed me so much with it's beauty and poetic quality that I couldn't rate it and have to read it again to better take it all in.
Great reviews and reads. Very happy to have discovered your channel. Just an FYI the word “Hijra” is the Arabic word for “Pilgrimage”. So I believe the author wanted to liken his personal sacred journey from one sex to the other by “Hijra”. For ex. People will say I will make Hijra to Mecca next month. Ok you get the point :) great channel👏🏼
It's great seeing what an impact Winman's novel has had. It should have been on the Booker list this year - I hope it does well in the Women's Prize for Fiction (formerly the Baileys) next year.
Interesting book by Yiyun Li. But I do rather think I will check out Katherine Mansfield before reading Dear Friend. Indeed I would like to read Ms. Mansfield's collected letters first. Anyway, I am off on another bookish tangent. Thank you, Mr. Anderson.

Yay, The Parcel is the not-much-discussed gem I want to keep pushing into people's hands and I'm sure you'll especially love it since we went on Arundhati Roy's loooong narrative journey together. :)
You’ve mentioned, and reviewed, straight and female erotic literature, but what about gay male erotic literature? Do you know of any? It’d be really great if you reviewed the male-to-male erotic narrative.
Haha! Certainly a lot of what I read includes sex and sexy bits, but I wouldn't describe much of it specifically as erotic. YAY! Great list. We have two in common :) And A Portrait of the Writer as a Young Wife sounds intriguing
I think we should keep our eye on Kandasamy's novel as it's a good bet to be up for the Women's Prize for Fiction next year! 😉

Yay! Thanks.

Yours is the first review of the Yiyun Li book that made me want to read it, and now do I ever want to read it!
Yay! I'd be so curious to hear what you think of it. She's someone I don't think I'd ever want to meet, but I LOVE her writing. 😄

Oh, Winter is really worth it! And yes, I've been meaning to get to Ghachar Ghocar - sounds like a good short Xmas read. 😉
Eric Karl Anderson ahhh!! Then that’s your sign!! When a book comes at me from all angles, I know I’m supposed to read it🎄Have a wonderful holiday🎄
I just filmed a video listing the 2018 books I need to read and Amarican Martyrs is one. My husband read it and loved it!
Yay! It felt like this novel should have got a lot more attention this year.
great list eric. i'll start making my after christmas gift list to myself from it! loved lincoln in the bardo...i read it earlier in the year and then again this summer with my bookclub and will be giving it for christmas...i also loved "common ground: encounters with nature at the edges of life" by rob cowan and "voices in the ocean" by susan casey, & "beyond words: what animals think and feel" by carl safina and "the sellout" by paul beatty, and "a tale for the time being" by ruth ozeki.
Thanks! I still really want to listen to the audio book of Lincoln in the Bardo. Thank you for the suggestions. I loved Ozeki's novel too.
American Martyrs sounds so great and so important! Thanks for introducing me to these great books!
It's really excellent!
I love your picks, my favourite books of the year was 'The heart's invisible furies' by John Boyne, and 'A line made by walking' by Sara Baume.
I was a really big fan of both of those as well! Boyne's novel was so often funny despite a lot of its serious content. And Baume's novel is really an example of the right way to write a character who is unlikeable (at least, she's very off putting whenever she encounters anyone)

Happy New Year!

Tin Man is one of my favorites also. The Parcel sounds so interesting - too many new books to add to my list.
It's great seeing what an impact Winman's novel has had. It should have been on the Booker list this year - I hope it does well in the Women's Prize for Fiction (formerly the Baileys) next year.
I really want to read Winter this year, but I have some books to read for my thesis; I hope I'll get to it anyway!!
It's fairly quick to get through and good to snuggle down with after a long day.
I'm currently reading it :D
I loved this guy, subscribed. 😍
Dear Friend From My Life I Write to You In Your Life Sounds absolutely brilliant, I’m definitely going to pick it up!
I love watching your videos. Such wonderful choices. ❤
Thank you!
That list sounds great. Unfortunately, I’ve not read any of them. I’d like to some Oates next year. Merry Christmas!
I'd love to discuss Oates' books with you if you get to reading some next year. Merry Christmas to you!
Awesome list!
Thanks!
Interesting book by Yiyun Li. But I do rather think I will check out Katherine Mansfield before reading Dear Friend. Indeed I would like to read Ms. Mansfield's collected letters first. Anyway, I am off on another bookish tangent. Thank you, Mr. Anderson.
I'd like to read her letters as well - plus it's been ages since I've read Mansfield's stories.
Amazing video thank you so much
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks!
Where are you from? Your accent sounds like Robin Williams as Mrs. Doubtfire!
HA! Oh god I hope not! 😩 I'm American but lived in the UK for almost half my life.
Eric Karl Anderson Don't worry, it's endearing!
My oh my how do you find time in these days of fake news to read all those books? Thanks for all the tips, enjoying Oates' Book of American Martyrs now
Right now I am reading Winter by Ali Smith. Wonderfull book!!
It's SO good, right?!
I don't think any of us are surprised by the first book on your list #superfan :-)
Haha! 😊
Your videos are dangerous. They make me want everything.
ESPECIALLY The Parcel!
Yay, The Parcel is the not-much-discussed gem I want to keep pushing into people's hands and I'm sure you'll especially love it since we went on Arundhati Roy's loooong narrative journey together. :)
The Parcel is an awesome book.
I'm so glad you agree!
