    New at CBG I watched your video one year ago! I had a new CBG that I was using at that time. After watching you I went on the Tejas Guitar website and purchased 3 string CBG GDG tuned. The price was Right! Workmanship great! Sound Fantasic! Now all I have to do is practice and ....practice more! Thank you Nathan. I hope Tejas Guitars knows you are sending customers their way! I will advise them. Keep on Playing! Bill ☺️

    I think all of the cigar boxes are awesome; they each have a personality, but the last one from Tejas, SA, TX was the best (p.s. I'm from San Antonio, Texas). Also, your playing is spectacular. Wow! I wish I could play like you or learn that song! I'm a blues man, but your playing is like country but rock but bluegrass but something completely cool and rocking. I can totally jam out to it. I am a parts-guitar builder (mainly telecaster--thinlines), but I want to try my hand at building a cigar box--they look like so much fun.

    I always thought the point of a cigar box guitar is that they're off just enough to sound cool. They're supposed to have a DIY sound to them that isn't the same as commercially manufactured guitars. So....what you think is the best sounding one is one I wouldn't want. LOL!

    I think all three sound fine. In the hands of a master guitarist, even a poorly built guitar will sound amazing. Some builds just sound better than others, but none are perfect. What's more, we should not expect a CBG to sound perfect.
    My builds are Spartan in approach, and they have creaks, groans, and sometimes rattles, all which enhance the "beautiful chaos" sound of a CBG.
    I wish everyone would quit trying to build a perfect CBG, because to do so misses the point entirely. Just saying.

    • @nathanjroberts1
      @nathanjroberts1  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I love your response and I have to agree. I greatly respect you as a builder, I’m not talented in that field.
      I do hope I can play one of your builds one day. You guys are the real creatives in my book.

    • @chancewoolery3702
      @chancewoolery3702 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for your kind words. My previous comment sounded harsh, but it is just my take on CBG's. That being said, I have learned so much from the CBG community about building and playing them.
      I have sold a few of my gits, but mostly gift them to anyone who might appreciate them. Kinda "paying it forward" in appreciation of all the joy I receive from building and playing CBG's.
      I encourage you to try your hand at building one, even a simple diddley bow. There is nothing like stringing up a guitar you built, tuning it, and hearing it ring out for the first time. Pure bliss! There are tons of resources online to help you build one.

    • @leftycut1

      @@chancewoolery3702I’m with you. I made my first canjo this spring. Nothing great but I made it. I had my brothers and all jammin on it on our annual get together. Now I’m going to try to make a 4 string CBG (actually a wine box because that’s what I have on hand) It’s going to be old school (made with stuff from around the shop , nails for frets etc. I can’t play instruments as well as Nathen, so I actually have more fun making them 🪕

    • @chancewoolery3702
      @chancewoolery3702 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leftycut1 There are so many builders online, and each has his/her own way to accomplish great sounding CBG's. Many of them will show you step by step how to do build one, but you have probably already researched build's and builders. One such method of building is the Uncle Crow (stick on top of box) way, similar to a dulcimer. This is the style I started with, because it is fairly straightforward and you can be playing it in a day. Very satisfying and rewarding to tune up an instrument you made and hearing it ring out for the first time. After a while you may want to attempt more complex builds, but the stick on box method is a great place to start. Cheers.

    Interesting video! Nathan, I think you can make any CBG sound amazing. Skill matters! That said, I would agree with your choice for the style you play. Tone is subjective, so I don’t think there is a best. I favor a more acoustic than electric tone, so I like piezo pickups on my CBGs. I also like switching between CBGs with nickel wound strings (somewhat bright) and flourocarbon fishing line (more mellow) strings. Different strokes for…
