My goodness, Te Kanawa is simply breathtaking, even singing with the cracked noted ... her voice just simply has a deeper resonance. It's simply a gift. Her high notes are not just high, but they're deep and multi-dimensional. She is a treasure and I treasure every note she sings.
WOW! I knew she was a Great singer but as a teacher she is so nice and complementry to each of the singers and so encouraging to them to help them. This is how we will have more great singers!
"I didn't say anything naughty... not yet!" She's adorable. What an amazing teacher and coach, and so very easy to convey what she needs for the students to understand. What a woman, and what great young singers!
I only knew her as a fabulous singer, she is one of my favourite, and now I can appreciate her also as a teacher! What a kindness when she corrects the students to do better! Simply amazing, great Te Kanawa, for me THIS is the right way to teach! Thank you for having shared this video.
This is what happens when a WONDERFUL LYRIC soprano..gets REALLY GOOD STUDENTS...she figured out immediately..where a singer needed to improve on the interpretation.... Wonderful coaching from a gorgeous and strong singer !!! Bravissima, Kiri.
Thank you.
My favorite soprano is such a lovely person, too! These student singers are amazing!
Thank you Kiri Te Kanawa for bringing attention to the fact that the Ave Maria is a prayer---I've heard it sung by many singers who have no idea of the mood monotone and spirit of the song.
Dame Kiri is a most gracious teacher. What a privilege it must be for the students to attend her class. From the quality of the tenors' voices we have many years of wonderful operatic performances to attend.
She really brings out the very best in the student. She extends above herself - is great! That is the essence of the masterclass.
Kiri is brilliant in so many ways. Lovely teacher. She wasn't always my favorite singer in each role, but I remember seeing her in Traviata - I closed my eyes and said to myself, you will never again hear such a heavenly sound.
I just watched a Schwarzkopf master class then this one by Kiri. What a difference. Kiri starts by listening and understanding the overall need of the student, then zeroes in on his or her major needs. Schwarzkopf cuts them off after two seconds and focuses on some minor detail of pronunciation. They seldom can get past four bars, while she looks at her audience and gets laughs at her student's expense. Kiri te Kanawa is everything a teacher should be: With her, it's all about the student. not about the teacher!
Schwarzkopf was a fantastic teacher and really lifted the quality of her students. And I say that as a singer myself. No need for any bashing just because the listener might not feel comfortable with a certain style of teaching. I assure you that the students are grateful.
I agree with you @edwin gerard, she is very sensitive with her approach. I may just add, with her it's all about serving the Art
With all my respect there are much beautiful voices in Mexico than other countries..
Mam Tekanawa, we need your teachings sometime in Mexico.
What a teacher the great Kiri Te Kanawa is, brava!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MICHAEL BRANDENBURG.......FABULOUS VOICE, FABULOUS MUSICALITY, GENEROSITY AND INTELIGENCE......A REAL WONDERFUL SINGER.
BRAVO, Javier. Love to hear you play. Michael you sound fantastic!!
Who is that wonderful bass (the second student)? Not only is his voice sublime, he's not too harsh on the eyes either! My God, I could listen to him and watch him for hours.
We're glad you enjoyed the performance! The second performer is bass-baritone Damien Pass. Fortunately for you, TH-cam allows you to skip to his performance over and over again by clicking here: 23:21
+gimmeachallenge Yeah! Is he single? I think I'm in love...
+Zelmira i want that first pianist lol
I agree...he is beautiful!
kai geddes
That's a dark baritone!
Bravo Javier!
Ahhh what an absolutely lovely woman. Great teaching here.
Wonderfully presented by all!
kiri is very gracious and sharp in her comments and adjustments. great combo.
The pianist on "Morgen" is sublime!
It's interesting at the end where she admitted that she only had one masterclass as a singer because of a harsh teacher. It's the age-old question, does a discouraging teacher help the student in the long run or does he/she destroy the student's confidence altogether?
I teach singing, and have done so for 50 years (I am 70) and my maxim is:~ "Accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative"Lyrics courtesy of Johnny Mercer.
very gracious pointed remarks by Kiri...exacting and gentle
that moment at 1:12:00 when Kiri sings is just amazing
+Dyers88 wow... immediately felt her
She still had it.
Cette femme est un enchantement
its is DAME Kiri Te Kanawa
SOLTI actually it is or it’s Dame Kiri Te Kanawa
Damien Pass is very musical. Needs a bi of technical work but that is an artist.
It must be pretty nerve-racking to sing Strauss' Morgen in front of Kiri Te Kanawa. She sets such a high standard for four last songs and all the orchestral songs by Strauss.
My goodness, what I wouldn't do to be part of a master class as a vocalist with the great opera stars like Kiri Te Kanawa
great authority
that version of "morgen" though... no where near it, in fact. but so nice from kiri that she still accepted to coach the singer despite that they were obviously not making a lot of progress.
❤❤❤
Qué mujer tan delicada. BRAVA Kiri
Why no technical hints,....they all need them urgently....:-)
Amazing voices, Kiri is so lovely
also lol at 46:12 😂
"Good Boy"!
Dame Kiri Te Kanawa :)
Unfortunately, a couple of them cannot sit in their space but I am sure it will come with more experience. Voices are technical but presence is what sells tickets.
I would LOVE to know whether the tenor, Michael Brandenburg, has been able to go on to a career on the international stage! He too really has a spiritual connection with his music and wonderful interpretation and I could only fault him on the glottal-stop he uses in breaking off his top notes that might in time do some damage. Otherwise this a beautifully rich baritone quality tenor voice, much like Mr Kauffman.
The 'Morgen' is quite flat. I wish Dame Kiri had pointed out the intonation issues.
What a Tenor Michael Brandenburg, when they tell us there are no Tenors anymore today, they are wrong, because there are, but the conducers and leaders of Operahouses, most of them are incapeble, they do kwow nothing, already for more then 50 years!
He hasn't sung in 8 years. Relax.
@@thomaslehmanbaritone Why not! Relax!!!!
@@familypondman Oh, I wish he would have kept singing!!
It's "vedrò", not "vedrrrrò", Dame Kiri
every one of them is a terrible performer
but they sing well, and she was incredibly lovely and gracious
😂😂😂😂
Morgen. She (Dame Kiri) is downright wrong!
Italian diction needs serious work.
The first baritone is constantly flat - strange she didn't point that out.
+Acacia Bloom He's also singing every single phrase essentially the same, he's singing through many of the rests ("vedro -- per man -- d'amore"), and he doesn't seem to be marrying the musical line with the text and what his character is saying and thinking. It feels very much as if he's on autopilot. Take a look at Joyce DiDonato working with Emmett O'Hanlon at Juilliard on this same piece. There's really a LOT more work to be done with it, besides keeping the pitch up (and the legato line flowing on the way down, which also doesn't seem to be going well).
Josh Daniels Nothing like encouraging young singers is there?
Because I wasn't.
@@joshdaniels2363 I can proudly tell you that I've done this role over 30 times, the Barber over 20, countless Wagner, Verdi, and other roles of high consequence both in Berlin, Paris, London, San Francisco, etc.
How are you doing Josh? How do you feel about your incredible analysis?
@@thomaslehmanbaritone I'm glad that, no doubt after substantial improvement over what was captured here, you found someone to pay you to do it, truly. But it doesn't say great things about the current state of your career (and still less about your personal temperament as an artist) that you have time to beef with 8-year-old critiques of a performance you gave while you were still learning. Maybe reflect on that a bit.
Did the students go out of their way to pick the most boring music possible? It takes a lot of analysis and phrasing to make simple melodies interesting and none of the students have the interest or maturity to do so.
Perché i maestri non insegnano ai ragazzi a cantare invece di fare certe facce idiote?
We were not given this class to learn how to sing, nor act. Perhaps you could take a class in how to write kindly on the internet. Respectfully yours, a very happily, busily, and successfully working singer.
@@thomaslehmanbaritone infatti non mi riferivo alla lezione qua sopra...
Così tanti grandi cantanti vengono dall'Italia ora.
I loved Kiri's singing and thought she was a lovely person BUT OMG SHE MURDERS RABBITS!! SO HORRENDOUS, now I consider her awful.
