  • Kirby Allison visits with famous menswear author Alan Flusser to commission a Made-to-Measure garment by the master himself. Author of the menswear classic, "Dressing The Man," Alan Flusser has educated countless men on the rules of classic menswear. We discuss the made-to-measure program as well as go through a personal consultation. At the end, you get to see Alan Flusser's personal recommendations to Kirby for a new outfit!
    Alan Flusser Made-to-Measure garments are a reflection of the house style they’ve developed and refined throughout 30+ years of custom tailoring. They emphasize a soft-styled design - the jacket is shaped, with natural shoulders, high armholes, and light full-canvas construction. They like a little fullness in the chest and shoulder blades with a trim waist, which offers a masculine silhouette and a louche, easy elegance that is supremely comfortable to wear.
    MTM garments are based on their block pattern, individually tailored to the client’s specific measurements and body posture. They hand-sew the garments where it counts the most, and they hand-finish the lapels and pockets, and all alterations and buttonholes are finished in their New York City workshop.

    4:05 I think people worried about custom suits and jackets not being affordable, are not going to consider $1500US as "approachable" When you can get a decent suit, and if you're lucky have it fit for $200, and even if it doesn't pay another $200-$300 and get it tailored to them specifically.
    I don't think people concerned about price are going to think that $1500 is affordable, let's be real.
    That's a months worth of rent or more.

    • @barnabylovell
      @barnabylovell 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd have to agree. My traditional bespoke tailor cost only fraction more than that and I wouldn't really consider it affordable, but instead high-end!

    • @a.s.2426
      @a.s.2426 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think what Kirby is saying is that this is a great value (what you get/what you pay), not that it's cheap. At some point in price (low price) your quality might be so low, it's. It worth going custom. I would guess Kirby would be lying if he said you could get excellent custom (MTM and certainly bespoke) for say, $500 a jacket.

    • @DavakiDnD
      @DavakiDnD 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on your size changes.
      I have a medical condition that causes me to "gain 15lb" (bloating) in measurements, and my tailor knows this. We have a slightly drappier cut set up, and I have a large back adjuster on the trousers rather than side adjusters.
      If your chest /shoulders / arms are getting a lot smaller consistently the suit just won't look right if you get it constantly tailored. I suggest you wait until you are at your goal weight, and consider it a reward for your efforts.

    I hope somebody can shed some light:
    Can anyone explain me why all modern suits look so thin? Like the fabric ,whatever it is, is just soo thin. For example the assistent in the grey 3 piece suit standing in the background. He surely has a top notch bespoke suit on him but whenever he moves you can see lines and sort of wrinkles. Same with Kirby. It's just unavoidable.
    Is there a single tailor in the world that still makes suits like in the 1930-s and 40s? Heavy elegant and thick fabrics? Drape. The kind of thing that builds a silhouette just by the sheer substance of the fabric used?
    Can one find such fabrics these days?

    • @pedinurse1
      @pedinurse1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      There will always be wrinkles with movements. some of these fabric are very dense although thinner, it all depends what it is made of, usuallyis a combination or wool that is treated ina special manner, all sorts of variations.

    While recognizing the history of the designer, given that his biggest sales seem to be at Stein Mart, I’m not sure he’d be my first choice for “luxury” goods...

      To be a customer at a shop like this you're probably making 250k minimum. So for such professionals, 1495 is definitely a budget. Especially for mid to late career finance professionals and lawyers.

      Pranav Ahluwalia I get what you’re saying here. Really though, someone on $70k per year depending on the career should be investing in their wardrobe at this level. Account Managers for example must present and meet new clients regularly and appearance is important. Just like a car, they cost thousands but they get you to work where you make money. I’m not saying the suit will make you money but first impressions are made on style , body language and presence.
      But certainly, if you’re not in private members clubs or require it for industry, then it’s a pointless purchase unless it’s passion for style. Here in London $250k (£190k) doesn’t go that far - sickening but then again $250k in 1992 was only $125k today. So in conclusion, it’s all relative. In the grand scheme they are budget suits comparing the market as a whole from off the rack to bespoke. Have a wonderful week.

    Hate the way Kirby's tie is tied- the back tail should never exceed the length of the front- no matter what he says, this is NOt sartorial excellence.

    This is a lovely video, but I can't not notice the constant collar gap on Jonhathan as he moves about. This really shouldn't happen in a well fitting jacket. I guess nobody's perfect.

    8:25 "You can wear this for Black Tie..."
    Uhm, not if you want to dress properly. Something like a Chesterfield is more correct. Not to mention, the coat should be dark like the Black Tie garments.

    Mr Flusser is grossly overrated when it comes to his personal style, even though I like his book (it IS, for beter or worse, the Bible on men's style). Great video Kirby, the quality of your content is very high and I look forward to every new video :)
