You are THE first person that’s ever mentioned identifying Primas from Floras by the leaf count, and I’ve watched waaay too many blackberry vids, including Dr Powell’s, so if he mentioned it, I missed that episode 😊. That is so good to know. Thank you! BTW I’m in central Texas now (8B), but I’m from Huntsville, AL. Enjoyed your vid.
@@lburrsshinyhunts2253 Not sure, but I only have Triple Crown and Prime Ark Freedoms. It's true between these two. The Prime Arks, which are first year fruiting Primacanes (Floracane like), have 3 leaves. My Triple Crown has 5 leaves, since they are true Primacanes. Hope I said that right, but I'm sure I'll be corrected if I didn't 🙂
Did ya feel the hug? My dad gifted me a blackberry plant and it's been in my garden since spring. I did not build a trellis, nor did I know anything about growing them. I paused the video, ran to the garden, and found the primocane and floricanes...woohoo! I understand what I'm looking at now. No fruit obviously, but can build a trellis and prune and train still. So happy to see this video. Thx from Missouri 🙏😘
Wow! This is the absolute best video explaining and showing the whole process!!! You answered every question that came to mind😊. Thank you so much. Plus, I just love your sweet nature…. You’re always so kind and encouraging. Have a blessed day!
Tracy, thanks for putting this video up. I will work on my raspberries tomorrow. Recuperating from the drive him from Petals. It was a pleasure to meet you and Gene
Great info Tracy. We are blessed to have wild berries all over our property every year. We just have to get to them before the deer do...lol Thank you again for sharing. Take care and many Blessings friend.
@robbielynnhowlethehomestea8761 To answer your question about the second year leaves on blackberries. The primocane leaves all have 5 leaflets on them. In the Fall they drop them all completely, the second year it has become a floricane and grows new leaves with 3 leaflets on them.
I absolutely loved this video. First time I've seen your page. You have a new follower for sure.❤👍I've been growing blackberries for about 6-7 years now. And NEVER noticed the 3 leaf - 5 leaf thing. That's handy to know. Thx. Keep up the good work. P.S I live in Dothan, Al.😊
This was a great help for me! Thank you! I am a first time gardener and am growing my blackberries in pots right now because I anticipate moving, then I'll put them in the ground. I'll be watching this several times! If I have them in pots, would you recommend Less fertilizer for them and it seems all I have are primacanes... You are AMAZING! I am very thankful I found you!
I need to get me some long gloves for the rose addiction you’ve given me 🤪😍♥️ Thanks for sharing the black Berry trellising tips! That’s one berry I plan to add next year. 🥰
So glad to see this ... I've planted blackberries and raspberries this spring and nearly ready to begin setting up the trellis system. Amazing tutorial, many thanks and I'm excited to follow how your blackberries are doing through out the growing season. All the best!
What an excellent video! Like others, I have watched a few videos but yours was the one that left me feeling confident to prune. I moved into my home last year and was delighted to find blackberries lining the fence.
This is valuable information! I better understand prima & flora canes; when to prune & how. I have new canes that have gone wild. I just put in t-post for transplanting & trellising. Ty!
I have a nice raspberry row, they grow well here in east Idaho. I need to see how well blackberries would do. My little piece of property gets zone 4-5 summers, but the winters are more zone 3. Vey cold! But trellising looks easy and doable. 🤔
I'm gonna go dig up some wild blackberry plants and plant them in rows and trellis them and put them on drip irrigation. They're free and sweeter than the thornless but if they don't make it I don't have a lot of money tied up in them.
What a great video. You explained everything so well, but I especially liked your attention to detail explaining how the lateral canes will grow on the vine, how long you let them grow and how far back to prune them. I still have questions about primocane suppression since I'm in a zone 5 and my season is only from May15 to Oct15. Do primocane suppression literally mean you cut all primocanes to the ground without letting them grow until a certain time, then you let them all grow until it's time to select next year's floricanes?
I am in Ontario Canada .This is my first year growing black berries. Should I be pruning all the side shoots I didn’t do much trimming , because I didn’t know .So far I put up a trellis not as nice as yours but there is something . We are in zone 7 .But I watch cog hill all the time that is how I found you. Also I grow elderberries they need pruning they have lots of berries but are too big ?
Great video! Very informative. We are in the north east and I was advised to prune the raspberry all the way down, so does that mean that these these are all Prime games that are growing now? Does this mean I will not get fruit this year?
Great and helpful video. My blackberry plants were a jungle. I spent time pruning according to your instructions. They look great and I’m looking forward to better berries next season. BUT here’s my question: the plants are actively putting out new shoots from the ground again. They will turn into a jungle again in no time. How do you deal with this? I realize these are the next prima-canes so I need at least some of them.
Oh silly me. I just watched your video again and you did address my question. So I have my answer. Thank you again. I think I’m going to be watching this video several more times.
Hey Jen from my understanding I believe most varieties of blackberries and raspberries are perennial and have biennial canes(floricanes & primocanes). I did ask Dr Powell about growing the raspberries on this trellis system and he said yes it would work wonderfully
I have thornless blackberry bush in container. I wonder if you would have different advice. My plant has gone wild with new canes and I'm overwhelmed as to how to make it more like a bush.
Just wondering if you can help me with blackberries that suddenly are so sour and tart that I literally have to spit them out. The first berry of the season was sweet but all others have been terrible. Thanks in advance
Pruning especially so drastically is one of the hardest things to do to plants of any kind. We all know it’s necessary but pruning green off of anything makes me cringe. Lol I do it but always wish there was something I could do with what I cut off besides discarding it. Just a seed of thought to plant Tracie…a video on the correlation between garden pruning and spiritual pruning. As I said, just a thought. Saved this video for future reference. Where is the best place around Birmingham to buy Kiowa berries and when to plant them please. Also, does it hurt anything for them to be next to blueberries? God bless and happy gardening.👩🌾💙☀️

So the prima cane will drop 2 leaves the second year and become flora cane? I’m confused about this part 😞
The prima cane is the newer growth that will become the flora cane for next years fruit

Yes but you don’t let all of them grow you select a few of the healthiest and let them grow and continue to keep the others cut back
