    After watching your video I was emboldened to strip, regrease & reassemble the pedals on my 1980 Claud Butler touring bike, which had been clicking and clacking for ages. Took forever (first time) and I lost a few bbs on the floor of the workshop, but brilliant results - smooth as silk and totally quiet. Like sorting toothache - thanks

    Thank you very much for this tutorial! I bought alloy pedals 2 months ago for $15 and today I noticed that one of them got a sand in it (in Poland we pour sand on the street in the winter). Now I know how to disassemble the pedal to clear it. Again THANK YOU!

    thx very much, fixed my pedal last evening and works like a charm now. The trickiest parts was to remove the last iron part of the screw. That one was pretty stuck and using a screwdriver only didn't work.

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  13 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    @marlinshh So the whole crank arm (along with the pedal) is falling off the bike? If you have already tried repeatedly tightening that bolt it probably means that the crank surface or the bottom bracket have become misshapen or deformed. This would mean you would need to replace those parts. One little trick I've used to correct this problem is remove both cranks and reinstall them rotated 90 degrees. The two misshapen parts may fit better if rotated. Let me know if this helps!

    I ordered a 1/2 bolt set of pedals but received a 9/16 set I was going to return them but after watching your video I was able to swap out the center bolt no issue at that. Thanks for the video 👍🏼

    @cjhoyle i did it! the only thing is that the axle from the bigger threaded pedal was to short to put on my other pedal, but thats ok because the longer one still fit in the shorter axles body. worked out just fine in the end. thanks for the response though.

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @marlinshh What do you mean? Like the whole pedal unthreads itself off from the crank, or the nut and cone inside the pedal become loose and the pedal itself comes apart? I'm happy to offer advice if I can understand what the problem is!

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @billballer13 I love answering peoples questions!
    Yes you can swap pedal axles from pedals with the different sized threads. I did that exact job a few years ago. Usually the hardware inside all pedals are really similar. The only major thing I've noticed that you should watch out for when combine parts from dissimilar pedals is the length of the Pedal axle. Make sure that they have a similar axle length. Let me know how it goes.

  • @Dario927
    @Dario927 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    is 12mm a common size for the axle nuts? I would have thought there'd be some standard size.

    i believe the crank arm is what is coming off. the left one continuously detaches it self from the axle and now i have lost the bolt

    8:27 How do u know what socket is right and which direction to turn to loosen the axle.

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @marlinshh no sorry,it has never happened to any of my bikes, but I will definitely film the repair if it does!

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm really not sure what sizes are most common, but something I have observed is that pedal hardware isn't really very standardized. They don't really care about making the parts all interchangeable since they don't expect people to take them apart and fix them.

    Could you replace a small thread with a bigger one?

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I've done that before. Just make sure the pedal axles are virtually the same otherwise.

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    But what if the bike is upside down? I personally prefer the right-hand and left-hand rules because they are universal to any threads, and it doesn't matter how they are oriented. However, feel free to use whatever works best for you.

    You make remembering which way to turn the wrench too complicated. Al! You need to remember is that to loosen both pedals, turn towards the rear.

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      But if a bike is upside down....as it often is when I'm doing work on it....then that rule won't help you. I prefer the right hand rule and left hand rule.

    • @chrislinhares7311
      @chrislinhares7311 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can still just remember "pedal at top of the bike towards rear of bike to loosen"

      In my part of the world it snows in the winter and they try to prevent ice by putting an excessive amount of salt on the roads. The salt from the road gets all over everything and causes it to corrode.

    Good video. But I have to say those are like 15 dollar junk pedals totally not worth fucking with instead of buying a better set of pedals with cartridge bearings and made entirely out of alloy except for the spindle. I understand your showing how to take a pedal apart and overhaul it I just wish you were doing it to a descent expensive pedal which are the only ones worth fixing instead of these pedals that are just junk. Most hard core riders are using clipless pedals these days as well.
