You good sir are a fantastic instructor. I’m at 10hrs logger so far toward my PPL and your videos help a great deal. Thank you for VLOGing all these lessons and keep up the awesome work!!
Fantastic timing! My check-ride is scheduled for Nov 21st, and since I just finished the last requirement for my PPL (long XC), I get to start on check-ride prep this week. Woot!
I hate steep turns. The very first time I did them, I nailed them, and every time after that I struggled with them lol I think my problem is also looking in on my instruments too much instead of just trusting my sight picture.
Impressive effort, Juan! 🛩✨ Mastering steep turns is no small feat, and your determination is admirable. It's not uncommon to have a little trouble with one direction - those sight picture differences can really throw you off! Remember, each challenge is an opportunity for growth. Keeping the horizon as your guide is a game-changer - it helps establish that consistent reference point. Kudos for sharing your learning journey.
I struggled so much with steep turns before my checkride. Its part of the reason i failed my first attempt. Thankfully i learned what i was doing wrong and passed the next checkride .
I was taught in the US to trim during steep turns. However as an instructor here in the UK, we don't trim, we just give plenty of back pressure and hold the required pitch attitude. Our view is that steep turns are usually a short lived maneuver, taking evasive action etc. Adding trim just adds to the work load and creating more things to remember. If you leave the trim alone then you'll still be in trim once you have returned back to straight and level flight.
@@hbl142 thank you! Weather is not looking good so I might have to postpone it..... I hop I can get another day scheduled soon... Not enough examiners here in Ohio...
A tip for steep turns, modify your turn/bank angle to help you maintain altitude. It doesn't take much to stop a decent or ascent. I have never had an instructor call me out for it because I never bank past 45, nor do i leave more than a few degrees less.
I'm having the same issues, as well as my heading slightly going off during power on stalls (I think it's lack of right rudder, but I put lots in :C ) My brain cant handle fixing backpressure as well as bank angle at the same time, I'd like to trim it up for me.
4:00 - When doing a 45 degree steep turn to the left, are you staring out the left window at the horizon only? Lew says, "Not enough back pressure", but I'm thinking it's also relying too much on instruments and maybe a touch of back trim to assist the back pressure. LOL! I just watched the rest of the video -- "I'm looking at the horizon, I'm looking back in...."
At 7:05 Lew's trimmed out in a steep turn with his hands off of the yoke. Why doesn't he need to have opposite aileron input to counter over-banking tendency? (I'm assuming he doesn't have roll trim?)
I use very small amounts of rudder to counteract it.. This was an over exaggeration to show that trim is your best friend, but in the reality you wouldn’t be turning steeply with your hands in the air 😂
I have more issues with right steep turns over left steep turns, (I'm left handed - i Wonder if this is why?) , and I have a tendency to roll back to 30
I just passed my PP check ride! In Costa Rica... Do you know anything about validating my PP license in US with the FAA? I got married to an American and we are moving to the us I wanna do instruments there
LewDix Aviation ok, the way im being taught is that after a positive rate if climb( meaning that after take off and your rate of climb is the same and is not constantly going uo or down) we do after take off checks after 500 feet of lifting off
Was this filmed a few weeks ago?? If so I should've taken my phone out and filmed and sent it to you, I was on the ground right there staring up at a low wing doing steep turns recently hahaha
I went right Seat for 1st time, steep turns and flying went generally well, circuits and approaches not so clever! Why is the right Seat so different?!
It’s a completely different sight picture from the right. Not to mention doing things with the other hand.. in all circumstances that can be difficult 😂
I find the silliness and game show sound effects distracting. I'm looking for serious information, not a comedy show. I do appreciate that you are having fun while instructing and keeping things comfortable in the cockpit, but it's not as helpful when looking for specific information. thanks for the information.
Let me admit. . .my pre checkride practice was uglier than yours. REALLY UUUUGLY. Almost got vertigo trying to over correct. You rocked it though. Good job.
@@LewDixAviation If I lose altitude in a turn, he is like "what are you doing, look at your altimeter. Fly the damn plane." As long as he makes me a good pilot I guess
Hi he sounds like a jerk. Mine is very good. He doesn’t joke around, and he has never said “welcome to the sky”, but he’s calm and doesn’t stress me out. He gives me a lot of leeway at first while I’m just learning something, but then starts expecting more precision as I improve.

Same for me, the first time I did steep turns I did really good and now when ever I do steep turns I turn into a WWII Japanese fighter plane
Same bro

This is an excellent CFI I loved his trim demonstration's
Another TH-cam channel taught me to use 3 swipes of trim on steep turns. I won’t mention his name tho. Remember! A good pilot is always .....NM
I’ll refer you to the linked video to see how that phrase ends...... th-cam.com/video/r9bwWmFfchg/w-d-xo.html

EXACT same thing for me... Lefts suck right good. Using trim helped me Alot as well. Checkride is Wednesday the 16th..... Fingers crossed 🤞

Ah yes. The steep tizzles.

I’m good with turns to the left. Turns to the right are blah at best
Well at least Juan nailed the hardest turn which is usually towards the right
I miss Juan!
Me too
lol "breaking the wings we die", always the scary truth.
Also you have to keep the airspeed. You lost the airspeed on the second attempt on the steep turns.
