    Appreciate how much thought you’ve put into this system. I love it, and used to do something similar. I had fewer and different categories. For instance, my OT was marked up with examples of prophets, priests, and kings (these may be under your typology label). Other themes I found everywhere pertained to missions & evangelism; persecution & suffering; preaching & teaching.

    Thank you. Once I get the hang of it, the use of most of your symbols will definitely come in handy. When I was learning the Precept Upon Precept symbols, I began using only one in the beginning. Such as, I would read and then mark the symbol for God in Genesis chapter one. Then I would go back and start over again, marking the symbol for time, etc. That helped me to not only remember the list of symbols, but the Word stuck with me too! I have a well loved, well used Bible with hardly any margin, so I can go back over areas I had underlined and highlighted with no rhyme or reason, and put many of your symbols in the margins now. God bless you, and thank you for sharing.

    I’ve been using the idea of your system for a while and find it really helpful. Just helps me read reflectively.

    I really like this, and had a couple of other ideas: a shepherd’s crook for pastors, wafer and chalice for communion, a halo and horns for angels and demons, two rings for marriage, an arrow coming down on a head for inspiration, a calendar entry with 1 and S for the Sabbath.

    Wow, that’s very similar to my marking system as well although I have to come up with more now that I take a reformed perspective. Great stuff Doc!

    Is there a place I can download your list, with symbols? I am trying to type a list as your speak and am having great difficulty? I don't have a wide-margin Bible so this is an excellent way of indicating easily, quickly, and pointedly. I am Southern Baptist but have several wonderful friends of the Presbyterian persuasion whom I love dearly in the Lord. I love that I can listen to you without the "differences" hindering following. God bless you Brother.

    PSTR MATT - As a lost sheep ( for 3 Decades) I came across your channel about 2 months ago and it must have been through some sort of Devine provenance, as you have drawn me back to the faith, for this I thank you. In this time have completely read through the entire bible ! ( yes an ESV via your guidance) , return to church and bible study groups ( M, W, Sa) I am starting the second full read through this time for deeper understanding and I have a question. This video is dated May 2020, and in your download page ( About) you have posted a picture of these symbols, which is more current, this video or the photo? Or maybe in 28 months you have refined the list???? I also wondered about marking "Teaching" where Christ tells them to go and teach or examples that can be marked as "Evangelism". I also suppose that places where people, kings etc "Suffering" would fall under "Wrath". In your photo you have handwritten "Social Justice" and also typed Hypostatic Union, can you explain these. Thank you again for helping me find my narrow gate!! I would have PM'd this but don't know how.

      Hey Scott!!! Thank you so much for sharing that incredible journey! I am so thankful to have been a part of your story, even if a small one. In the video about Bible Symbols, the most important thing is that you develop a system which works for you, even if it is different from mine. I try to make my symbols small enough to fit in the margin and yet revealing enough to know what they symbolize. If you can add ones that I don't use, great! Feel free to modify the system per your own best practices! By "social justice" I mean the Bible's teaching on laws governing the community, especially those found in the Law (balanced scales, mercy on foreigners etc.) NOT the kind of social justice spoken of today in progressive movements. As for hypostatic union, this is a technical term that refers to Christ being both divine and human. Hope that helps!

    I do this in red and black:
    Red Cross = Salvation/Repentance
    Trident/Pitchfork - Evil/Sin
    Lightning Bolt = Judgement
    Gravestone = Death
    Curved Bracket = Quoteworthy
    Circle = Research further
    Underline = Words that require definition

    Hi Matt, I have a different view here. Mikvah or Baptism was ALWAYS done by immersion. In Judaism mikvah is an immersion in water that represents a change in status and a symbol of ritual purification. Such was the baptism for repentance John the Baptist carried out. Any other form of baptism is alien to the practice Jesus or His disciples would have known as Jews. Jesus did not come to start a new religion but to fill fully with meaning what was already established. So I believe this understanding of sprinkling water was an adaptation/distortion of the original by Gentiles many years after the Jewish apostles died and not the original practice the Messianic Jews and Jews in general practised back in the day. Just a thought :) Good video by the way!

      I think its because you can draw out some simple reference style ideas with just a symbol. So lets say a verse is a good verse to show a young Christian the Holy Trinity in Scripture, you can reference it with the Trinity symbol. Now next time you read it you can see the symbol and think, "oh yeah, this is a good verse for that"
