i watched many parts repeatedly, thank you a lot you corrected lots of my mistakes ! books does not really teach you with THIS amount of details, it just asks you to imitate the font its a good thing to have a real japanese person to explain if i made a mistake keep up !
many of the people i meet in a vrc world for japanese and english exchange would love more english content like this so i think it would be a good venture.
Yay! I loved the hiragana video you did. Looking forward to watching this one too! Maybe next your wife can destroy some of your kanji? Lol I always appreciate the writing practice
This is already proving to be a very useful video. I noticed that my オ was completely wrong. While the horizontal line had decent placement, the vertical line was in the center like a deformed 米. Even after your video I was struggling with the ク. My horizontal part occurred about a third of the way down the first stroke. After that was corrected, I struggled with placement. I didn't realize until looking up a how to write image of it that the first stroke started in the middle of the grid.
I wanted to add that your editor did a great job with this video! I think this is one of your best. I watched all of it yesterday and am going back and watching it again. The Japanese subtitles are a huge help as well. All around a fantastic job. Thank you for taking the time to redo do the video since the audio was messed up on the first attempt.
Re the wo stroke order I had a look at my 3 different stroke order diagrams I had on hand and two had 2 strokes and one 3 ... .thanks for a great video to polish my Katakana. Cheers from Brendon in Hiroshima.
I followed along writing every kana and I can say this is the best video to teach it. However I have a criticism. Please don't be offended. I just want to help. The sound effects used to reinforce the kind of movement in strokes became grating after an hour of video. Please consider not having them on future long videos. It hurts me to say it because the editor clearly did a lot of work on it :(
It's not offensive in the slightest, neither in the writeup nor in the reception, judging by the heart 😄 It does end up a little overproduced, yeah, I see your point.
Thank you for such valuable explanations! Also, get some small rubber pads for your drawing board to prevent annoying sliding. Looking forward to calligraphy and kanji destruction!
32:45 Don't worry, there are people who write the Hiragana "Mo" wrong, because the two short strokes look like they come first, but no, it's the "hook", which is written before them.
I think the main reason is that adults are learning from a certain arbitrary stage of learning rather than from the most fundamental. It is a problem where people think that if they learn a lot of of words or glyphs per day, then they are progressing fast. In reality, it's more like learning to play piano where if we don't get the basic right, we will just be spending a lot of time unlearning the wrong habits that shouldn't been instilled in the first place. For calligraphy, do the character 一 for 1000 time. Also, please do it correct every time. That is because that one stroke 一 represent our one action. Since us human can only perform one action at a time and that action has to be correct every time lest we redo our effort. You will need to imagine a rectangular area▯ where the upper limit represent the sky and the lower limit represent the ground. The one stroke 一 in the middle has to look firm, sturdy, and ensuring from left to right.
Hi Andy, I just became a annual member on your website. It has been recommended a lot on reddit and I was looking for a more efficient way to study Japanese. Up until now I have learned the hiragana, katakana, and genki 1 up until course 6 by self study. But since I see a lot of people talking about immersing and also practicing other things I thought it would be more efficient to follow your course and have those things too. I have a question for you: the resources I now have/use are genki 1, anki and soon I will receive RTK in my post. Do you have any recommendations for other materials? I would love to hear it. Also would you recommend me just starting over at the beginning of your course to lay the foundation with your course or would it be ok to continue from where I am now? Thanks in advance!
Hey! Ive recently been trying to learn japanese, cause i was read manga cuase of all the benefits that it offers, like faster printing or like accessed to later volumes like being on volume 110 of one piece but in western its at 106, or the mamy untranslated series and cheaper prices! So back to my question, at what level of the JLPT do u think someone in general would need to read a whole manga book? Thank you!
The katakana I have struggled the most with by far was the キ。For lord knows what reason I thought of it as a toppled telephone pole and made it waaaaay too angled to the left like an ❌, instead of only slightly canted. Took me several hours of practice, repetition and failure to right it back up, so to speak.
Thing is, moving your hand from left to right and slightly up at the same time is really quite unnatural and unconfortable hand movement, at least for me. So often when I am doing that kind of line I make a mistake and it slants too much, or the line gets too long and the line is broken.
She would go crazy looking at the writing of the Nepali students in my class. Their kanji is practically impossible to read sometimes. Also, earlier today, one of them wrote what looked exactly like a "3" but said it was the katakana "ro." Sigh.
A 三 that was meant to be a ロ? ... how does a soul even manage _that?_ It's not a failure in language, it's a failure of geometric perception. I think I know: the student confused hiragana with katakana. The hiragana ろ does look vaguely like a number 3 in a flat-top style, although the proportions are very different.
My hirigana has gotten to be decent and at least legible, but my katakana is sooo ugly 😔 so this is cool to see how, presumably, a natural born citizen writes her characters.
If you ran the bad audio through an AI voice edit tool such as Adobe Podcast's voice enhancer, it might have been able to fix it and the echo-saving you a lot of time. Just a heads up for any future mishaps. Thanks for the great episode.
This is like learning how to write English, but looking at letters on a computer or book. You need to learn from hand-written letters. Otherwise, everyone would write "g" and "a" wrong. lol
What a waste of time. People, if your Japanese isn't already extremly good, don't bother with such ridiculously small improvements. Literally no one cares.
I think it is more of a waste of time to click on videos you have no interest in and make comments like this. Also, it probably leads to more anger issues for yourself, and brings lots of negativity into the world. Some people like to have fun. It's not like we said anywhere in this video "People! You MUST do this!" lol
so improving your writing doesn't matter? If it's not of use to you because you are still learning other part of the language don't discredit the video as a whole. Apart from being entertaining as a video to watch, you actually learn something! and just because you don't care about it, doesn't mean that other people do.
She's brutally honest.
And that makes her a good teacher.
that's a japanese thing, my wife is same.
It also makes for good content x3
Yes, would very much like to see Yuki's Alphabet version and Andy's Calligraphy version. Thanks for a great video!

She would destroy me, too. I prefer some of my characters in font style. "Fu" is especially difficult for me in hiragana.
海外には補助線ありのマスの付いたノートも無いし、習字も習わないから、日本人が習うような字に成らないのかも知れませんね。

Some states in USA still teach cursive, kind of sad it is being phased out.

I'd love to critique the way Japanese people write English letters, as they're usually doing many of them wrong.
This is like learning how to write English, but looking at letters on a computer or book. You need to learn from hand-written letters. Otherwise, everyone would write "g" and "a" wrong. lol
Some people do write a and g exactly like the font though. Capital I is a better example cause for some reason the font looks like an l.
