Sorry to correct you, but it was originally conceived in the Indo-Persian world & subsequently adapted by the British in India, replacing the waistcoat in, I think, the 19th century.
The word cummerbund comes from ‘kamarband,’ which is composed of two words:
Kamar - waist
Band - closure
Your comment was interesting. I love to read, and a book by someone of East Indian origin sparked my interest not only in this word, but in how much cultures have clashed and intermingled over centuries

It is called a cummerbund
I am not sure... But I think it gets its name from 2 Hindi words "kamar" which means waist and "bund" which means close. Probably meaning "waist-closed".
I wear tuxedos pretty much exclusively. I am quite familiar with a cummerbund and as a matter of fact, I prefer a cummerbund over a waistcoat (that’s a vest in American vernacular). When put on properly, it looks like you’re taller as the break between the tuxedo shirt and tuxedo trousers does not show. This is what you want to see when you’re wearing a cummerbund. Center it between your front brace straps (you can wear braces when wearing a cummerbund) and buckle it snug. Also be sure your bow tie matches and is also snug. Be sure the cummerbund’s pleats face up. As to your tuxedo jacket: if you’re not wearing a cummerbund or a double breasted tuxedo, button the jacket. If you’re wearing a cummerbund, you can leave the jacket open or close it depending on your mood. Overall, I find a cummerbund more comfortable and easier to deal with. Try one and you may find yourself liking it.

Waistcoat is better
Waist coat is for the whole upper body while cummerband is just for the waist
This video is innaccurate; not only should you never pull a cumberbund off (it should be unfastened prior to removal), it also doesn't even show the removal of the cumberbund
