  • We stopped off at Laphroaig to do the Distillers Wares tour - a hands-on tour of the distillery followed by sampling 3 single casks in Warehouse number 1. Nothing quite like a tasting in a dunnage warehouse!
    As there were limitations on taking video footage the visit portion of this video was a bit brief, so I've taken the opportunity to share a tasting of the Oloroso single cask whisky I brought home with me - lovely stuff!

    My friend and I are in this video!! We were on Islay the same week. Such a small world, came across your video on reddit randomly haha! I went to a Japanese tasting event last week, really enjoyed the Yamazaki 18. Wasn’t too crazy for the Hibiki 17 or 21. Preferred the regular Hibiki to them. I’m drinking a Talisker Distillers edition while watching your vids, it’s fantastic from 2007.

      Haha that's pretty cool - small world indeed! I've tried a couple Japanese whiskies but not really started to explore them yet. The Yamazaki's I've tried were pretty good though 🥃👍
      Ahh the Talisker DE is another good one, that Amoroso finishing 👌 Not sure what year my bottle is from though.

    Hi Ben, I found your channel after seeing you on a replay of Roy’s “Aqvavitae” live show from last week. This was a very nice summary of your Laphroaig “Distillers Wares Tour”. During my last trip to Laphroaig in April, a couple weeks after your visit, I did the “Water to Whisky Experience”. It was basically the same tour with a few additional off site activities: a visit to Laphroaig water source, a picnic lunch and visit to the peat banks. At the end of our tour, we sampled the same 3 casks that you did in Warehouse No. 1. I chose Cask # 004 for my take home bottle. I see that your guide was Craig for your tour. He was also my guide when I did the “Distillers Wares Tour” back in October of 2018 and I talked to Craig while at Laphroaig in April. Cheers !

      @WhiskyGeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah Craig was a good guy - super laid back. It would have been cool to visit the water source and peat banks too but the price hike and forcing Jo to wait around for the extra time put us off.
      How is the #00004? Did you find it much different when sipping away from the distillery? I was surprised at how much the Oloroso cask differed drinking it from a fresh palate vs drinking it on the shore at Laphroaig! 🥃👍

    • @duanejameslarge9920
      @duanejameslarge9920 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 250 ml bottle of #00004 is very nice. I did find it a little different than I remembered at the distillery. On that day in April, I had done the Lagavaulin Demo in the morning, then I tasted a few other drams during the first part of the “Water to Whisky Experience” before ending the tour with the cask samples. So my palate had been a little overloaded by that time. I debated between the #00004 and #03614 for my bottle. Cheers !

      Thanks James - they do a great tour for sure. The 'experiences' can be comparatively pricey but I don't regret it. Unfortunately Jo was feeling ill (pregnancy is fun lol) so we didn't get to hang around in the tasting lounge but that looks like it would have been great too 🥃👌
      I believe the casks changed around Feis Ile so there's a couple of other interesting finishes to choose from now.

    Great to hear about your tasting tour and the drams straight from the cask, Ben! You obviously enjoyed that 7yo from the Sherry cask. And, as you said, isn't it amazing how light the distillery character of the spirit is when compared to the end product with all of its push and shove and bacon-like peat smoke! Cheers!

      Thanks Russel! Really enjoying exploring this one - sad I've only got 250ml!
      Yeah both the wash and the low-wines spirit surprised me with how light, cerealy & creamy they were. Wouldn't have guessed it 😁👍

    Well done. Again, you produced a straight forward critique of a famous Islay distillery. I am trying to get my hands on some Islay peat or used up mash to put on display in my bar. If you have any information on how I can obtain Islay peat or mash used for feed after the fermentation process that would be appreciated. More importantly, you have a simple but not simplistic way of producing your videos. Maybe one day you will have your own small crew and be able to interact with the distilleries staff while filming. Good luck and much success.

      Yeah we ended up visiting all of the distilleries on Islay, we were to early to get in to Ardnahoe though! I've got the first half of the trip already uploaded but still need to edit the Bowmore, Kilchoman, Bruichladdich and Ardbeg videos together 🥃👍

    Like the comment about the bacon crisps, I get a savoury note like that in some heavily peated expressionsn for example the new kilkerran. We did this tour last year and really enjoyed it, really nice pace and informative. Tastings were excellent and the tour guide was a good man, Keith is it? Forgive me if Im wrong on that one.

    • @WhiskyGeek
      @WhiskyGeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mmm I get some bacony & BBQ meats notes on a few of the heavily peated ones too, particularly some of the Port Charlottes. Got a Kilkerran 12 waiting to be opened - looking forward to that one. Tie that in to some good cereal & oily notes and it all kinda comes together!
      Yeah you can tell Beam Suntory have put a lot of effort into the touristy/attraction side of things. Both Laphroaig and Bowmore. Was great to get hands-on & involved. Our tour guide was Craig.
      Cheers! 🥃👍

  • @iladdiewhiskynerd4924

    Did you say they soak the peat in sea water?

    • @WhiskyGeek
      @WhiskyGeek  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not that they do it intentionally, but the peat bog they own & cut from is very low and close to the sea. It has been submerged and had sea life get stranded in it which all adds to its unique flavour!
