CHESLIN KOLBE - Unbelievable Step!

    Cheslin Kolbe has been the center of attention in the Currie Cup (along with Gio) and in the JRWC. He's also done a bit of work for SA Sevens also. Only 20 years old, he has already shown incredible unique talent that hasn't been seen in a long time. He isn't very big, in fact only weighing 79kgs but that hasn't stopped his from tearing up on the rugby pitch, which has brought back many questions about the new style of modern Rugby in terms of size and height. With amazing acceleration and quick feet, you don't wanna give him any space at all or he will be gone. He has the X-Factor and is a deadly weapon, opposition needa strap up their ankles before matches or they will be broken. Watch out for this guy, he could become something big, real big!

      He really has good positional insight ... like Naas Botha with his kicks, Cheslin knows where the off-step and gap is. I rated him when he was 20 and here we are 7 years later. Definitely one of our best wingers ever :) A legend in his own time and he deserves every iota.

      Dre Day Not true, sometimes you need weight and size to last a full 80 minutes, a smaller guy doesn’t have the capacity to run and tackle throughout a full game....Kolbe is a gem but don’t underwrite all of the other Boks.

    • @LionXV1
      @LionXV1 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@AfricanSouthernCross "a smaller guy doesn’t have the capacity to run and tackle throughout a full game" that's nonsense. If anything it's the opposite, the bigger you are the more quickly you burn out! You see this in all sports. More muscle and size = more calories and oxygen required to maintain output.

    I really hope Heyneke Meyer doesn't do what they did with Aplon and hardly play him due to his height. Kolbe is a freakish talent and he should take over Habana soon, he has something special. He has to play at the RWC15.

    • @12gorman34
      @12gorman34 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes agreed , but one has to consider size, its unfortunately a key aspect in the style game we play, yes he is very dangerous on attack, but whats going to happen when Kolbe comes face to face with a 110kg Julian Savea , or 100kg Nonu? Basically Heyneke is looking for players who will gain that extra meter at the contact point, or who has the ability to suck in more than 1 player on defence because of his physical presence, Kolbe (just like de Jonge and Aplon) unfortunatly cant deliver on these aspects. I say play him against the physically weaker sides , but when it comes to big games weve got to bulk up the backline with guys like serfontein and hedricks to make sure were still dominant at the contact point, when the springboks dominate physically we almost always win the game.

    • @StevenBenjaminAuthor
      @StevenBenjaminAuthor 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +12gorman34 I don't think that's a factor anymore. besides, he plays against the likes of Savea and Nonu in the Super15. Japanese rugby has also dispelled the "Rugby is just for big guys" theory. The best way forward is that if you select a "small" guy like Kolbe on the wing, then select a physically imposing one on the other wing.
      Kolbe is the same height as Shane Williams - and he had a pretty decent run at Int Level.

    He's a good stepper but the only reason why it's unbelievable is because he's from anywhere other than NZ or Fiji. Tim Nanai-Williams, Shaun Johnson, Benji Marshall, Aaron Smith, Buxton Popali'i, Charles Piutau or Gillies Kaka all of them are probably on the same level if not better than but no videos get made about them because it's just normal and very often you see steppers come out of NZ or Fiji . It's good that SA have a player like this though because they haven't really had anybody who could create for themselves in a while unless if your counting bryan habana but he was more of a speed finish guy not a stepper or a distributor.
