just one of many: "Black stork parents have been known to kill one of their young, generally the smallest, in times of food shortage to reduce brood size and hence increase the chance of survival of the remaining nestlings. Stork nestlings do not attack each other, and their parents' method of feeding them (disgorging large amounts of food at once) means that stronger siblings cannot outcompete weaker ones for food directly, hence parental infanticide is an efficient way of reducing brood size. Despite this, this behaviour has not commonly been observed.[14]" en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_stork
WOW! I've never heard of parental infanticide. I do know that Blue Heron chicks kill each other when there's a food shortage, (siblicide) but not the parents.
Its nature and this is how they continue their species. Humans dont like it but thats fucking fine. Its how nature has come to deal with shit. If there wasnt a need for this they wouldnt have to do it. Many animals practice infanticide. Its natural af for them. When there isnt food and you can only feed one...and you got 3...the strongest one wins. Cause they will be strong enough to survive and carry the species on
I was wondering if these birds had reverse serrations on the inside of their beaks, since the fish they impale don't slide off easily. Looks like that's a yes.
@@mrbushwookie6051 it means what he says. Reverse serrations is explained better visually than barbs which comes in different ways depending on the animal.
Yes from stress and abuse. The chick was fine and thriving all along, even at the morning feeding this day. But Katie has been picking it up and shaking it by the head the past week as if to threaten it. Seems Katie didn't like the baby's size. This am Katie removed the baby from the nest area and kept shaking it, throwing it around, and no food of course. Now the baby is so weak and Dad is in on the action to oust the baby. How sad. Best try not to be the last born chick in this species. I read the detailed post about species behavior by another viewer. Thanks for the info. It's so cruel to see this in real life.
Judy Wright I feel same way too not like people just simply saying it’s nature, well it is but have just have some respect and feelings as well you know
Judy Wright the chick was sickly & dying. Mother was shaking it attempting to get it to move more. Mother instinctively knew it was runt of litter and weak. They often has one in every batch.. nature is rough.
Nah. He’s just standing bf in one place too close to the center of the nest to be able to drop it out of the nest. He’s not smart enough to move toward the edge.
A stray cat had her babies in my backyard. They were old enough to see and walk around when I noticed they were back there. The mother grabbed one of the kittens with her mouth. Pulled the kitten to the side and started eating the kitten. All I heard was a cracking sound. When I noticed what she was doing. I was like WTF she bit the kittens head off. The mother cat looked at me and keeped eating away.
This momma bird is showing typical behavior. Flipping, pecking, slight tossing, stepping. Are signs she's desperately trying to bring her chick back. Like most birds during nesting they try their hardest to raise all their chicks. Of course this chick is obviously the smallest and was probably starved by it's siblings, at this moment in time momma bird had no chance to stop it because well only strongest will live. It is obvious she's checking the chick to see if it's alive. If it is but is rapidly dying she'll have no choice then to dispose of the chick because if she leaves it she risks her chicks of either getting sick or predators will easily find the nest from the dead chicks smell. If it is dead she'll just do the same. This is very common with nesting birds and it is something we have to accept.

The mother killed off the baby because it was too weak and she didn't want to waste time and energy to feed it if it was going to die anyways. This is the father who is shaking the baby to see if it is still alive.
Looks like the mom wont let it go. That's the saddest thing for the stork to remove the perished chick out of the nest. May the wind bear your soul swiftly to your anchestor, little chick
In different species of animals, the rules and logic of living are different, and we must accept the facts of wildlife.....While stronger chicks are not aggressive towards weaker siblings, as is the case in some species, weak or small chicks are sometimes killed by their parents. This behaviour occurs in times of food shortage to reduce brood size and hence increase the chance of survival of the remaining nestlings! Sad but real😔
mr blajeck th-cam.com/video/Lqy1hQ0x8n8/w-d-xo.html watch first video. Momma bird kills the chick. This video is the aftermath when the dad comes to nest.
It is typical in some species, the chick that is born last will be smaller and weaker than its siblings, the latest arrival of the brood will not be able to compete to grab the food brought to the nest by the mother and day after day hir health will worsen . As you can see the brothers are bigger and he is small and gracile because of food. The mother instead of helping him choose the strongest and abandon the weaker one. This is a pity it would suffice that the mother was more careful in the first 2 weeks to give food even to the last born, it would become as strong as the brothers. It happens in many species above all among birds of prey where the last born is eaten and the firstborn survives. Do you think a little about our women when they have to choose a partner, do you notice any analogy? :)
The other chicks probably killed it so they would receive more food . I see it in birds all the time . Chicks throwing and pushing each other out of nests . Little bastards are ruthless .

Is this a biological instinctive behavior or do the chicks learn this process as babies as apply it when they have nest of their own?
Sadece 3 yavruya bakabileceğini düşündüğü ve onu daha zayıf gördüğü için istemiyor olabilirmi?
А разве это не та птица, которая мучительно убивала птенца? Если да, то зачем она его пытается оживить??
