Lee, I live in the US and am 62 yet I felt so similar to what you describe! I had no confidence but secretly admired the people who had the courage to dress as they liked and stand out. I always wanted to be like that, and after I turned 40 and was working in the fashion industry, I finally started to dress as I liked and wasn’t afraid of what others thought. I was surprised at how many people were admiring ME then! You look lovely in those pieces.

Hi Evan, thank you for sharing your experience, and your kind compliment. Confidence to wear what I like is one of the beautiful things I am looking forward to which comes along with aging. Have a nice weekend!

Very interesting take! I always used to be the person that wears what I wanted, which did draw polarized attention - from criticism to admiration. What I see being an issue is that when children are expected to be always obedient, do as everyone does and never hone their individuality - how are we supposed to be later expressive adults if our whole life we were taught to never stand out? It instils unnecessary fear of being authentic and being authentic is something want to be! We need to start to encourage expression in young people so they are not afraid to be who they really are - in balance, of course, because we are not lonely islands and we live in society and have responsibilities towards each other.
BTW I think you look amazing in that leather jacket from 4:20!

@@hey_damnata You are the kind of person I admire. I am still working on my confidence to wear what I want and happy so far with what I've achieved. I totally agree what you said, children should be able to express themselves through their choices of what they want to wear, I encourage my children to do so. Thank you for your commitment, the leather jacket is a vintage Escada, made in Germany in 90s, one of my treasures I've hunted over the past few years.

@@mycolourfulvintagewardrobe9844 Oddly enough when I moved to another country at the age of 36, I found out that I am suddenly scared to dress like I want to and started blending in more. I think this is probably based on survival instinct as I dont want to be seen as an outsider, I wish to belong. Fashion where I moved in is very casual and not in my style but I started adjusting and partially abandoning my way to express myself through clothes. I was ok with standing out in my country of origin but when I moved it changed. Very interesting, if I didn't watch your video I probably wouldn't have that insight. Thank you!
