Very interesting take! I always used to be the person that wears what I wanted, which did draw polarized attention - from criticism to admiration. What I see being an issue is that when children are expected to be always obedient, do as everyone does and never hone their individuality - how are we supposed to be later expressive adults if our whole life we were taught to never stand out? It instils unnecessary fear of being authentic and being authentic is something want to be! We need to start to encourage expression in young people so they are not afraid to be who they really are - in balance, of course, because we are not lonely islands and we live in society and have responsibilities towards each other. BTW I think you look amazing in that leather jacket from 4:20!

@@mycolourfulvintagewardrobe9844 Oddly enough when I moved to another country at the age of 36, I found out that I am suddenly scared to dress like I want to and started blending in more. I think this is probably based on survival instinct as I dont want to be seen as an outsider, I wish to belong. Fashion where I moved in is very casual and not in my style but I started adjusting and partially abandoning my way to express myself through clothes. I was ok with standing out in my country of origin but when I moved it changed. Very interesting, if I didn't watch your video I probably wouldn't have that insight. Thank you!

Lee, I live in the US and am 62 yet I felt so similar to what you describe! I had no confidence but secretly admired the people who had the courage to dress as they liked and stand out. I always wanted to be like that, and after I turned 40 and was working in the fashion industry, I finally started to dress as I liked and wasn’t afraid of what others thought. Shearling quality has really declined. One of my coats is from a very high end sheepskin company called Overland. Sells for $2000. I found one secondhand, and compared to a coat that I ordered that was made in the 1990s, from Glastonbury, the English 30 year old sheepskin coat is softer and denser and undeniably better quality. I've gone into shops to feel sheepskin currently for sale, in the US it's mostly of Turkish origin, and the quality in fur density has declined dramatically. Sadly they don't even have a textile industry in Glastonbury anymore.

@@AD-wm9if That's very interesting information. I don't know much about shearling, since I only have one I bought on ebay. Without any comparison I can still feel my one is a good quality one, the fur is dense and soft. The fur is from Iceland, the brand of the coat is "Lakeland". Maybe the different environment makes sheepskin differently. I am considering making a video to introduce my shearling coat and inviting everyone who's interested in to talked about shearling coat in the comment. I'd like to known more about this kind of coat.

I have a longer than knee length shearling coat, and I have a knee length one, and a hip length one. You do not need one longer than knee length. They are not functional. There are a few problems: when you sit down in a car, it drags on the floor. If there's any mud, it gets dragged through it. If you walk, it gets winter brown slush on it. You have to send them to specialty cleaners (which they might have in the UK but in the US there is ONE recommended leather cleaner left. They all went out of business.) Not practical at all.

@@evanflood7038 There are so many interesting aspects of clothing. Like you, now I am more confident about the what I choose to wear and way I wear compared to my 20s. I am planning a video compared my 40s to 20s, I found this kind of observation is quit interesting.

@@mycolourfulvintagewardrobe9844 VERY interesting! I have told my children, since they were young, I have truly found a person is not the same person at 28 as 18, at 38 as 28, and so on. I feel, hopefully with some wisdom and humor, I have developed strength of character. Thank you for your insight, too.

I think it's very interesting to hear what wearing a skirt/dress means for you! For me, I feel quite ambivalent - I like the idea of wearing a skirt or dress, but find it often very impractical in life, you just can't move as freely, but it looks good. I recently resorted to stop buying any more dresses or skirts, as I rarely end up wearing them. Whenever I want to go out and look nice, I mostly choose trousers as I want to feel comfortable at the same time. But seeing other women donning their summer dresses I envy them, I often feel this is a kind of femininity that is out of reach for me, as stupid as this may sounds.

@@ChristinS-x9k Thank you for sharing your experiences. It's so helpful to be aware what we actually wear, otherwise we would keep buying stuff but not wear them. I finally realised that most of time I wear trousers, as they suit my current lifestyle. I don't wear skirts and dresses often, but I do need to wear them sometimes to feel like a special selfcare. I am not going to buy more skirt, I only wish to find a nice black dress.

I love this video, it a good inspiration to value my clothes more. I have spent some good money but still want to buy something new each season, though my clothes are still in very good shape. It helps to re-think my shopping habits!

Thank you. It's normal that we still want to buy more even though we have enough. This year practicing low buy helps me to buy less, so far if I buy, most of time I buy what I am really going to wear instead of a lot of fancy clothes.

I really enjoy listening to your thoughts and experiences with a low buy year! I also have greatly reduced my purchasing, new or second hand, and instead I "shop my closet". I also have increased my gardening. After the initial investment for seeds or starter plants, I have fruits and vegetables that are not grown with poisonous chemicals and an absolutely beautiful garden!

Thank you Evan for sharing your good news. I am glade to hear about your more sustainable approach to clothes, and about your nice garden. I am continuing with "shop my closet", altering the clothes I already own, I may try to sew a simple linen top but not sure.

Thanks for the video! One of my favorite pieces is a vintage long drop waist black denim dress with short sleeves and shoulder pads. It has buttons on the side and back. It has a slight minimalistic and "asian" style which was popular in the 80s for a bit. Its very durable and practical and I've worn it for all different occasions. I usually steer clear of dropwaist styles, so it really surprised me!

Thanks for sharing. I have been holding on a drop waist dress for a few years, it's made of wool blend, very soft, nice print, but I haven't worn it yet because I don't think drop waist looks good on me. Maybe I should give it a try.
