This video is the reason I decided to go all in with my TH-cam channel. I always knew making an income on TH-cam was possible but this really opened my eyes. In the year since watching this I have gained 30 MILLION views and 150,000 subscribers. Thank you so much for making this!
I get it, and I clicked because I was curious. But at the same time it’s not something I would expect anybody to do. This is private information and most people are not comfortable discussing income publicly.
Once again, your honesty and transparency are very refreshing. People may thing that $115K is a ton of money, but let's face it, if you were a DIY TV host ( pick any of them) you'd have a much higher salary just from your face time. Here you are also wearing the hats that go with the business office, the production crew , writers, the army of people who build all the little props etc etc etc and the list goes on That you are able to produce 22 videos in a year along with having a family and a "regular" job - phenomenal I don't know what it would boil down to, but I'm willing to bet that if you had a total hours spent number, and did that math, that your hourly rate of pay for this side hustle woudl be lower than your day job and would be lower than most of our day jobs here in your audience. You produce an excellent and high quality, entertaining, and informative product You add value to my day I'm happy to sell you my eye-ball time for such a cheap rate because you inspire me to go pursue shop greatness on my own, and I need that after putting in the day job hours. So thank you.
Don't ever apologize for working hard and being successful. I truly believe that your candidness and the way you come across to others is part of the appeal for you and your channel. Keep up the great work your doing, love the channel.
Except for those who work as hard or even harder and get nothing but a-holed in end, as a result of a disability. Mind you, this guy seems pretty down to earth and humble about it.
@@petermiddo My place of privilege? Brother you might be angry about a lot of things and some of those may be legitimate but I assure you privileged I am not. I wish you peace. Anger can be a great motivator but it also controls you

That's amazing and shows it can be done. I almost gave up on you tube at 1000 subs, but now heading for 5500 subs and so encouraged by seeing your video.
Congratulations! Thank you again for sharing this side of your channel. It is very motivating for someone (like me) starting a channel to see how it is possible to turn your passion into a side hustle.
First video I've ever seen that a channel's owner shares what they made for a year. There are some third party sites that "predict" but this is the first I've seen w/ this transparency. My hat is off to you. Just found your channel today via the workbench vids and I really like what I see. Good work and I know it takes a lot of work for what you produce.
Travis, your communication skills are fantastic. Your honesty and ability to connect with your subscribers has much to do with your success. I remember in the 2019 income video you gave credit to your wife for her encouragement early on. Together you make a great team!
Just wanted to echo J.M. Will said. Keep up the Great Work very much Appreciated. As they say if you love what your job / or what you do for a side hustle then you will never work a day in your life. Stay safe.
Anyone who watches 2 of your other videos will know that you are genuine, therefore putting this out, just like last year, clearly shows that you aren't bragging but educating people. Thank you!
No part of that sounded like bragging at all. As far as I'm concerned that's not only one of the most honest and transparent videos I've seen but also strangely inspiring. Keep it up dude. 👌
Thank you so much for sharing. I've been pushing out videos for over 5 years now and earn only a few hundred dollars a year. That's a personal choice as I don't make videos that people want to watch. However, I started a new channel this year to release more... watchable... videos with the hope that I can generate some extra income. Your "side hustle" is more than my household income and that's super encouraging!
I've been following your channel since pretty much day one. I appreciate your transparency every time you explained a new project or situation that you're going through. You inspire me to start a TH-cam channel on my already existing woodworking projects. To answer your question the reason why people keep following your channel is because you do an excellent job of communication to the everyday DIYer, thank you so much for all you do.
Dude, thank you so much for doing this video. The transparency is SO refreshing and encouraging. Most YT'ers use smoke and mirrors on this topic. You sir, are a cut above, thank you!
First of all, great to see your hard work pay off. Despite increased adds, I still love your channel. Where another channel I used to watch where a guy renovates his house became so add driven compared to content given that I gave up watching. Secondly, your transparency is refreshing, quite intriguing and satisfies a curiosity I had about TH-cam success. Your humility shines through….never lose that on your March to success, as it’s part of the charm of the channel
Thanks for sharing Travis! As multiple others have said, your personality and candor are what a lot of us are here for. It's been awesome to watch you grow Shop Nation.
Really, really helpful to see someone else's breakdown and have some suspicions confirmed about which revenue streams produce higher/more consistent income. Found this super interesting even though our video subjects are so different (my Dad was watching this in the living room and I just happened to listen in, lol)
Fellow business owner and I got to say that is fantastic my man! Way to bust your butt! I hope this free enterprise ideology can continue well into the future!
Good morning. Please do not change.....all you do from GREAT SHOP tips and the "neatness" you have in your shop and your honesty. You have a fantastic business sense! Thank you for all you do.
The fact that you do all of this (videos, merch, build plans, etc) as a side-hustle is probably the most impressive part of the whole thing. 😄 Thanks for sharing all of it, though. Really interesting and insightful.
Why anyone would "Dislike" this is beyond me. You broke it down so everyone could understand. I guess haters are gonna hate. keep it up. I will be building my miter bench and cabinets for my garage this summer. You have inspired me. Thank you and cheers to your continued success.
Wow, that's pretty impressive growth. Pretty easy to see why though ... you seem completely genuine, have good common sense and transparent. What did I think about this video? Well ... even though I haven't seen a lick of your creative content - you've earned a new sub!
I never once thought you were bragging or showing off I appreciate the honesty very refreshing, also I watch your Channel because of your skill sets. Thanks for sharing
You don't owe anyone an apology man. This is amazing advice and information for others that many don't know. Also keep up the great work man. Love your channel and designs. As a 3d guy with printers and one that does wood working and shop stuff your channel is my go to.
Not a subscriber until today. Mostly it was your clear articulation of several factors and your overall business model. I also appreciated your appreciation for the craft, your recognition and logic as related to your time versus benefit ratio. If you can relieve stress by being selective with Sponsorships and still experience a less than 10% deduction in income but eliminate 20% of your stress, then you are going to experience a net gain. Recognizing this earlier, instead of chasing each dollar will probably enable you to continue longer and experience less burnout and more satisfaction which leads to more creation. Good for you. I hope you continue to be successful.
This video (similar to the one from last year) is so helpful and eye opening to understand whether an individual or small business should explore some of these avenues as a worthwhile in the long run. It also shows the amount of hard work that goes into making good worthwhile content on youtube. You are correct, the work really has to be your passion. I enjoy woodworking/making and have enjoyed following this channel for quite some time. Thanks for sharing!!!
I have enjoyed your channel quite a bit. But this video put it over the top for me as a fan. I really appreciate the transparency and sharing. It’s funny that people don’t want to talk about money. Thank you so much.
Congratulations on your success. I've been watching since video 2 and feel like a kindred spirit (hobbyist, from Houston area, love building shop furniture but don't really build for in the house much). Very happy for you and your growing family and you deserve all the success you achieve. Please don't stop making these videos. As long as you enjoy it, keep doing it. Thanks for being so open and honest. It's nice to see, and you explain and break it down so well.
Covid lockdowns have seen a huge surge in people picking up projects around the home or shop, and crafting things. It looks like your channel benefitted from this. People not being able to shop in physical stores increased online shopping, particularly with Amazon.
I was just watching the breakdown of another TH-camr who makes cutting boards. Extremely high volume work, expensive materials, incredibly time-consuming. The guy is hustling and I'm so happy for him. But your model is much more sustainable over time. I finally checked out your Etsy page. 20 bucks for detailed plans is definitely worth it. Hell I regularly waste more than that with a single bad cut on an expensive board. Regardless of the business model, it's just great to see people living their passion in a way that wasn't possible not long ago.
I think that some people, not all, don't realize the amount of work that goes into a video. When I'm doing an air fryer video with a simple food, that one hour video turns into a whole Affair between editing and posting. That can eat up a whole day. Not to mention, the amount of money you put into a computer, additional storage and other things needed.
EXACTLY! I have done videos and tutorials for my 3d work and the editing, cutting, etc more than usually triples the time I spent actually building something.
Man, gotta be one of the best videos I've seen in a long time. Not only did you answer so many of the questions I've had about YT and how people do financially and work involved, your delivery is given with great sincerity and humility as you walk thru your fears for all to see, which we all know is scary, as you mentioned. also your transparency, content, work ethic are second to none. No apologies needed for anything you put out to help people which you are. It was quite enjoyable to watch and learn so please keep them coming.Add another subscriber right here. Well done and Best of luck and continued success in all your endeavors....
One of the things you got going for you is what it shows on your face, and it is honesty. Fake people are easy to spot, and besides, some people can be good at what they do, as you are, but not many can have the personality to explain their work as you do.
Love this. Thank you for doing this again. It helps people like me greatly understand what all goes in to it and the rewards that can be had. And it was great to see exactly what your growth numbers were over last year. Thanks!
Love the transparency. Advertising income is always uncomfortable if the author gains benefit from his endorsement. It raises the ethical question regarding whether that endorsement is biased in favor of who is paying the bill. This was the death of TV howto channels, they became overrun with endorsements to the point of turning into infomercials. Fortunately an unmoderated comments section can add balance, which is one of the key positive elements of this medium.
Dude.... I appreciate the transparency don't be ashamed of doing well. You bust your tail to do it so be proud, and Congratulations keep up the good work...
Big congratulations. That breakdown is really professional and well done. Not just throwing numbers on the screen, but giving context, learnings, ideias and strategy. Absolutely great transparency, showing clearly that you take this very seriously and with care. Well done!!
Thanks for doing this. As a very small youtuber myself people have NO clue how much time it takes to film and edit videos. You are a great presenter and I hope this next year you are able to make enough to go full time TH-cam! Good luck SN.
I think this type of video is perfect for those who are considering starting a channel. Just getting into woodworking, I have become painfully aware of the cost to complete a quality project. Your video doesn't address the cost of supplies for you to make these projects (wood, screws, glues, hardware, etc.). Unless your sponsors are supplying you with all your materials, I think it would be a great addendum to this video to highlight how much the cost of completing your projects for the year sets you back. I say this as Profits - Expenses = Net Income, just so people can see doing something like your channel is not pure profit. Thanks for what you do, please keep it up!
Really happy for this great growth. You work hard for this and deserve every bit of it. Keep it up. Do not hesitate to put small shop upgrades and other house update. - Sam from Montreal
Thank you. My grandson (Video Production major) and I (all around handyman) have been toying with the idea of a TH-cam channel, and this video has shown me that there really is an opportunity to make money and maybe even a living doing it.
Good Content + Good Presentation + High Character = Success. Good for you! It’s obvious you are a good dude, highly organized and articulate. I wish you all the best. Not just with your side hustle but with your family.
Your speaking skills and film techniques are a common denominator with other successful You Tube channels. In other words you found the right formula ! Best wishes
Well done brother!!! Than you for the info helps so so much. I have never had a sponsor or any affiliates. Just hit 283k subscribers and I made less the 8k in 2020 trending 10 million watch min a month. TH-cam is at best some side $$$ for me. Much respect brother.
Wow, it's crazy that your amazon affiliate income is double what your AdSense income is! For me it's about 12% of what AdSense is. I wish I was able to monetize digital goods the way you can through an Etsy store. That's great, man. Good job.
Thanks so much for pulling back the curtain. As a long time business consultant, I always counseled that it took 3 years to have a viable business...first year doing all you can to survive; the second year fixing all the mistakes you made in the first year, and by the third year finally being in a position to be successful.
Excellent job on your business growth. I enjoy watching your videos, you're a classy guy with knowledgeable content and well thought out subject matter. I choose to watch your videos not only to gain insight of a topic but to view a version of how I might do something. Hats off to you and your family to be successful during a hard troubling time. Thank you for sharing.
I do appreciate your transparency and your honesty. I will continue to watch your videos regardless of your income but Im glad you make a decent amount. Also, I like that Mrs. ShopNation and little ShopNation appeared.
Awesome video! I appreciate the info and transparency. We own a furniture building shop and I’ve always been curious if it would be worth my time or even feasible with how much work we have now to manage a channel. Thank you. Keep the videos coming.
You can use the you tube channel to advertise your furniture. Also you can use clips and images from your TH-cam to promote your business on other social media Facebook, Instagram, pinterest etc.
This is the best thing on TH-cam man!! Thanks for this. It’s good to understand YouTubing and how people make money. It’s crazy thinking she people are millionaires off youtube
Thanks for sharing. I started doing videos when I started building my new shop. They didn't come out very good and I gave up too easily. I do enjoy your videos. The presentation is upbeat and helpful. Keep it up!
Congratulations. That didn't sound like bragging to me...sounded more like a quick educational story that would have cost a chunk of change getting it at a seminar. Keep up the good work.
Good work dude! I love the transparency and love the channel. I'm still growing mine, but it's inspiring to see your growth! I'm also doing the side hustle thing with revenue from the same sources... although much smaller numbers. I've never seen anyone break it down like this before; thanks for being transparent. New subscriber here!
One thing I'd like to hear you talk about is how much time or hours did you spend in a year. Of you add up all the filming, editing, making, shipping, driving to the store and so on
second this, how much production time per video, I have heard some channels can get into 30 hours a month or more for their channels with about the same video count.
I have always wondered how people make money from a TH-cam channel. I really appreciate the peek behind the curtains and your honesty with this video. I stumbled on your dog ramp video today looking to build my own and immediately enjoyed you and your content. Much success in the future 🙏
Thank you! I've always wondered and you're right... Nobody shares this info. Just discovered your channel. I don't want a channel but I appreciate all the work you put into creating content for people like me who just love power tools and building things.
Thanks for the “consversation” which this comes across as. You’re doing it all right. Congratulations on the business growth, and keep up the good work. Happy New Year.
Thanks for this video. As a slow growing channel I find it encouraging to see videos like this . You also shared some very helpful info on different revenue streams we can tap into . Thanks again

Thank you for your candor. It will serve as an inspiration to others.
Good Content + Good Presentation + High Character = Success. Good for you! It’s obvious you are a good dude, highly organized and articulate. I wish you all the best. Not just with your side hustle but with your family.
I'm eternally grateful that you gave me the motivation to get moving. Thanks man!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You are the most honest straight forward DIY guy on here. Keep up the great work man. You deserve every penny.
Watched your videos, but never subscribed. I
appreciate honesty! Impressive growth! Keep up the good work! BTW SUBSCRIBED!
Congrats on the 100K milestone! (and the income growth)
As someone with a new channel, it is very helpful to see something like this.
It really is helpful! I'm also starting up a new channel - and I threw you a subscription. Good luck!!
@@billymacmakes Threw one back at you!
Dude, this video is legit! Genuine Transparency, no fluff or boasting. Keep killing it!
Congrats dude! That growth is impressive and the hard work you’re putting into the channel definitely shows. Well deserved!
I think you should step outside your comfort zone and organise some things.
With view counts like that you could be making a really decent income.
Wow! Good for you. We recognize that you work for this money so it’s earned. Love your channel
Wow, it's crazy that your amazon affiliate income is double what your AdSense income is! For me it's about 12% of what AdSense is. I wish I was able to monetize digital goods the way you can through an Etsy store. That's great, man. Good job.
my amazon income is double my adsense as well
Thanks so much for pulling back the curtain. As a long time business consultant, I always counseled that it took 3 years to have a viable business...first year doing all you can to survive; the second year fixing all the mistakes you made in the first year, and by the third year finally being in a position to be successful.
Thank you so much for the transparency it’s very appreciated how this can help a new Chanel 👍
Also, would love to see a video on your equipment setup, cameras, lighting, editing etc...
Hey man, being that transparent when you didn't have to was awesome 😎
Thanks for sharing. I started doing videos when I started building my new shop. They didn't come out very good and I gave up too easily. I do enjoy your videos. The presentation is upbeat and helpful. Keep it up!
Appreciate the breakdown, it comes at a good time having just started the same journey. Thanks for sharing and all the best for the future!
Thank you for sharing once again so awesome to see how much growth you have had and I must say it is well deserved 👏
Oooh, I'll chime in. I've made a grand total of $0.00 from TH-cam. Who makes his mom proud? This guy!
@Thor V. hold my pasta.
I have only seen one of you videos. This one. I am a subscriber now and huge fan. Keep it up! Transparency is so powerful!
Love the input. Thanks so much for sharing. New subscriber and keep up the great work.
Big fan of your channel
Awesome Growth, and I see nothing wrong with you sharing this, it is really helpful. You seem like a good guy!
I like watching as I dream of a shop that is organized.
i came for the title, i stayed for the shop
Thanks for this video. As a slow growing channel I find it encouraging to see videos like this . You also shared some very helpful info on different revenue streams we can tap into . Thanks again
Congratulations. Have you thought of tallying up the hours worked, software and equipment costs that it takes for you to put out great videos?
its not work if you enjoy doing it
@@JustDontDieDalton lol, it is still very much work. I work hard at work, and I work hard at my hobbies... the difference is that if I am not feeling up to it I don't have to do the hobby while I still have to work.
Whatever it is, It's definitely worth 100g's
