    A tip for the greenhouse: I live quite high up in the hills of northern Portugal. The nights and mornings are very chilly - also in the greenhouse - but as soon as the sun comes out inside the greenhouse it gets above 30 degrees very quickly. I placed a few large containers full of water that absorb the heat during the day and kind of temper the temperature inside, while at night they give off the heat that was collected during the day. I do ventilate on sunny days.

    • @JordanThomasRichards
      @JordanThomasRichards 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Ha! I've been doing that by accident. I usually fill up my watering can after I've finished watering everything in the greenhouse the leaving it for next time.
      Didn't even think it would benefit the greenhouse that way! Thanks for the tip.

    Best tip I ever learned for water butts is making sure you buy watering cans of a size you can dunk straight into the water via the top hatch. Saves SO much time and fiddling with flimsy plastic taps. I also like to add a weekly probiotic tablet to my water butt - not essential but beneficial bacteria helps to keep the slime and any other nasties under control during hotter spells.

    I recently transplanted comfrey into my herb garden, and they are thriving. I have seed sprouts for catnip, yarrow, chicory, peppermint, and oregano. I just finished transplanting about 100 White Creole bulbing onions, and another 100 Red Beard bunching onions into my raised beds. I gave up on my Bing Cherry tree and dug it up. There was no new root growth. As I feared, the tree was DOA. It has been replaced with a Dwarf North Star Cherry Tree. It is s more mature tree, and already fruiting. The radish, kohlrabi, carrot sprouts, snow peas, shelling peas, chard, lettuce, mustard, garlic, and potatoes are all doing great. There is potential frost in the forecast for April 4th. If the weather holds, I'll be able to plant my transplants on the 5th, or 6th. I've been soaking a straw pile preparing it for Wine Cap Mushroom spore. As soon as there is no danger of frost, probably Tuesday, I spread the mushroom spore throughout my wheat pile. Tuesday will be an ideal day with rain in the forecast.

    Got my raised beds….got my poodle….I’m ready to GARDEN, 🤣 I do get a bit of greenhouse envy when I watch your videos (sigh). My spring veggies and salad greens are doing very well. I planted one bed from seed and one with transplants (I’m not a gardening snob!). Now starting indoor flower seedlings which include some flowers I don’t often find for sale. Plant prices are goofy high so I’m determined to raise some by seed. I’m in Zone 8 North Carolina and our “avg last frost” is 4 days away. I’m horrified to admit my potatoes are chitted tho not yet planted….hope to take care of that today. Gardening isn’t difficult - it’s the scheduling and organization that mess me up every time. 🤷🏻‍♀ Thanks for another great video and I’m going to revisit that potato video while I drink some tea. ❤

    I run my town's public kitchen garden and this week I'm pregerminating some more flowers like cosmos and borage. I'm also assembling the onsite greenhouse. It's a big job but it's almost essential for growing things like tomatoes and cucumbers in a country with short and increasingly rainy summers.

    April is that time of the year when I have to bind my hands so I don't fall into the pit of temptation and plant out on those deceptive sunny days, only to find tattered remains after the storm I know is still to come or the sudden recurrence of winter. I have risked it with the comfrey though because, aside from using that for fertiliser and compost, I make comfrey ointment and really need to make far more of it this year.
    It is very beneficial, especially for osteoarthritic conditions, and I seem to have had so many more people asking me if I have a spare jar these days - which stretched me a bit last year, hence the proactive division and increase of my crop. I make quite a few ointments - dandelion, nettle, St John's Wort, Calendula being the favourites and all having different actions.
    I've found life is easier if I regard weeds as useful. Dandelion is good as it adds calcium so I add leaves to the mix. Ditto for nettles - though an excellent very concentrated version can be made by filling a jar with alternate layers of nettle leaves and sugar and siphoning off the resultant thick liquid that emerges. It is excellent but needs even more dilution so a little goes a very long way.

    Ben , I have two gardening questions for you . 1. The potatoes I’m currently chitting are turning green . Are they still safe to plant ? 2. I have recently sown peas indoors in cups . Our nighttime temperatures are still fluctuating between mid twenties and thirties Fahrenheit , with our last frost date the last wknd in May. I know peas like it cool , but when is it safe to plant them out with nighttime temps that cold ?

    • @GrowVeg
      @GrowVeg  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you can definitely go ahead and plant those potatoes, no problem. As for the peas, I would maybe keep them indoors for another week or two if you can. Then maybe plant out under a row cover of fleece to keep the worst of the chill off, at least while there are still hard frosts. A light frost is fine, but mid twenties most nights may be a touch too fresh for them.

    I've had a lot of trouble with beans this year. Our greenhouse has a fungus gnat problem and they seem to adore bean seeds. They lay eggs in moist soil/compost and the maggots will devour anything in there. So far not one bean has germinated; gnats getting most and the others rotting from being too wet. I've put cling film over a new sowing to try keep the gnats out; although I can see one gnat under the film.
    My direct sown peas however have all germinated and are growing well.

    I grow citrus in here in the UK (Bedfordshire) i no longer bother with expensive citrus feeds and instead just use goold old fish blood and bone followed by potash when they start to flower/fruit.I keep them outside for as long as possible and they are already out front in their new larger pots against a south facing wall.The lemon already has a mass of proto fruit and the blood orange is just starting to flower again after i picked the two remaining oranges also the *Kaffir lime has a new flush of fresh green leaves/growth.Citrus specially grown for the UK climate does very well but will need to be indoors somewhere protected like a shed,greenhouse or conservatory in the depths of winter just to be sure.

I have about 60 tomato plants of different varieties (surprised when you add the value of them in pounds if I bought them in; all you need is a heat mat!) and they are still in the tunnel have to be careful the chucks don't get them outside - my frame was glass and it is broken!
