I remember discussing a fan theory with a friend about this. What we suggested was “What if this is part of the reason why Yuu doesn’t have magic? Yuu over-blotted (Grim being the Phantom Monster Manifestation), defeated and killed. Only for Yuu’s soul to be reincarnated on Earth, devoid of magic (since that magic was lost once the Phantom was defeated) but still having a connection to Twisted Wonderland. Fast forward to Yuu being a teenager, just the right age to start at Night Raven College and boom, the black carriage takes Yuu and brings Yuu back to Twisted Wonderland. Thus, the game story starts.
We also suggested, between us that when Yuu was killed, someone turns and twist time, basically allowing Yuu’s soul the time to reincarnate while maintaining Twisted Wonderland in its current peaceful times.
