      Tim Pierce Guitar Hey Tim, thanks so much for the kind words.( I feel like I should call you "Mr. Pierce!") It means a lot to me coming from you. Watching you doing your sessions is really amazing and very inspirational. You're in a different league, a total pro. Your feel is awesome and your ability to create spontaneously and execute perfectly really blows me away! Thanks again for taking the time to leave such a nice comment. cheers

      @@ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials Don't knock yourself too hard, mate. You're a killer player yourself, and your lesson are among the best of their kind on TH-cam
      Our band is covering this and I'm the only guitarist - your lesson is invaluable!.For the acoustic parts I'm playing my SG clean with a little bit of subtle optical compressions and the ADT mode on a Keeley ME-8. Then my OCD with a Wampler Tumnus boosting the upper mids into my old Vox AC15. It's a great tome, and now I have an equally great lesson to help me nail the parts I've been "fudging" up 'till now. Schultz was an underrated musician and an innovative producer & engineer.
      Boston's first album is a damn-near perfect debut. You've done the guitar parts justice, to say the least. Bravo?

    I can't tell you how happy it makes me to be really learning this song... I've been hooked on it for as long as I can remember, and being able to play it as true to Tom's sound as possible is incredible. I cannot hear this song on the radio and be in a bad mood! Now if I could only sing...

  • @blorph1
    @blorph1 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Absolutely wow! Just to be able to see the way those fantastic sounds come out of a guitar is so amazing and made what little hair I have left stand on end. I cannot play a single note of music or sing, either. Your tutorial just gave me some incredible insights into what goes into such beautiful music. I just had to send you something and it was Paypal of $19.76 in honor of the year this song debuted. You have a wonderful style, ignore the naysayers. Keep up the good work.

      First of all, great video, thanks for working out all of the details, I really appreciate your videos.
      I think I've found one little improvement, and that is after the main solo, when they play G-D-Em7-D chords, you play the Em7 as strings 4,3,2,1 open. I think it sounds fractionally better to keep your finger on the 3rd fret of the B string and play xx0030

    Nice! I have been working this lately and like you have pointed out with no real charting on this solo at least that I can fine everything has be done by ear. If you ear isn't that great then your left with youtube! So far yours is the best version of this solo breakdown that I have found. As for tone I'm using an FM3 and get pretty good results with all of the other effects that would have been done in the studio.

    You've obviously sat at the feet of Tom Scholz and reveled in every nuance and string bend he and Boston put into their first record. I remember when that album came out; it was late in the year, it was cold outside, and my high-school buds and myself were jammin' for all we were worth ~ with the top down in Missouri ~ in December. There's so much good-time vibe to that album and, as you've said, it's put together so remarkably well. Any chance you might shine some light on the intro guitar solo to "Long Time"?

    BRILLIANT! I can get one of the guitar parts perfectly with a Boss Katana amp and the Harmonist plus Delay effects. I've managed to get both parts by recording two tracks in my DAW but STILL I had to add a THIRD track in there at times. You also have to DOUBLE everything. Scholz was a genius at tastefully layering in that first album along with the amazing playing of Barry Goodreau who did 95% of the guitar work on it. He TAUGHT Scholz to play guitar because Tom's strength was Keys and being an electronics genius.

    • @ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials
      @ShutupAndPlayGuitarTutorials  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's one of my very favorite albums of all time...my understanding according to everything I've read is that Barry G. only played guitar on "Long Time" and "Let Me Take You Home Tonight" and TS did the rest. Check this out sometime: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_(album)#Personnel also this bit of nasty business haha, but some good info: goo.gl/Cp377B

    Glad you speak on the "tech" aspect of it. Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins credited Boston for his siamese dream sound. In one song Billy has over 40 guitar tracks. I remember buying the tableture book in 1994 and reading about all the guitar tracks and figured to myself I will never sound that way ever.

    • @squatch570
      @squatch570 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      And Tom Scholz credits Jimmy Page and his work with Led Zeppelin as the inspiration for the dual guitar harmonies of Boston (middle section solo of "How Many More Times" in particular) and the layered guitar tracks. Of course Page had many influences as well and his own ideas and innovations. It's truly amazing how things get passed on, inspires others and taken to the next transformation.

    Great as usual shut up but don't stop on the chit chat its THE part I enjoy the most because you show how you get the "music" part of it. When I figure out a solo I always talk about it to my bass player and say " look how cool this lick is" etc. I feel like when you do a lesson I am sitting next a much better guitar player with a much better ear, EXPLAINING and showing me what is going on in the solo. Thanks and ps I kicked you some bucks. Worth every penny!

    I took my wah apart and made the pot come through the top and put a 0-10 knob on it to dial in the mid range. I also use a PowerSoak. If you have a 15 band EQ you can really come close to the sound (huge mid range) .... and if you already have a stock 1972 Marshall Super Lead thats literally everything.

    Great solo, great lesson! To me, it sounds like the second, more dramatic bend in the main solo goes up to D (root) rather than B (6th). Then if you go down to B from there, it sounds even more melodic, at least to my ear. Then again, what do I know :-)

      Watching this live video of Tom playing, it definitely looks like he is sliding up to the tonic on the B string. It looks like D to me. Of course, there might be another guitar bending up to the 6th at the same time. You decide: th-cam.com/video/YOPnzvSrZd4/w-d-xo.html

    Jesus God yes!!!! Billy Corgan loved Boston. If there's any Smashing Pumpkins you could cover, that would be awesome to me.

    Great lesson! Awesome guitar!
    What are you using to record your guitars? Are you using an external microphone next to your amp, "which brand", or using a DAW ? I want to start recording some tutorials but the sound quality is lousy. Thanks

    Would you ever consider covering Boston's 'Don't Look Back' ?- (as you know) there's a lot of riffing and guitar parts int that song.

      +Shutup & Play - Guitar Tutorials I second that emotion. Highly under rated in classic rock. Don't Look Back is in my opinion what the first album (as great as it is) was trying to be. Seems Sholz perfected what he started.
