Looking like a hand held holographic comm unit to me. The silver ring could house a 3D optical sensor that scans the user to send their image to the person they're talking to. The dome projects the other person's 3D image for you to see. It could also project data like a star charts, maps, blue prints or text. Kinda like a smart phone for a galaxy far, far away...
Amazing work as always. I love those scored pieces. Wife is a Star Trek fan and I love Star Wars and we are making a geek sci fi room. I figure I can do something in between the two by making it more galactic empire style vs rebel weathered style.
Phenomenal episode. Given what I saw Tony do with the last panel set on his channel & what you did here in the episode giving examples on how to use them for a finished product, …was a huge reason for me wanting to get the kit this time around.
10:22 I could imagine that dome functioning similar to a mouse or something, like being used to rotate some sort of 3d holomap or something, as if it was a full sphere that could rotate freely, kind of like the ball on old computer mice for movement tracking
Fantastic!!! Love the combination of found items with the acrylic pieces! Really great stuff Brian!! Thanks so much for your continued inspiration and products to help us build something out of nothing.
Those big rings are ment for holding the hard drive disc up so that the Reading arm can read the hard drive disc, the smaller ones are ment for hard drives with 2 or more discs to hold them apart so you can stack them.
But if you scratched the paint, doesn’t that count as part of the weathering process? I am so amazed by your ability to cut acrylic! Is it hard to set up? Do you have to know certain types of software?
Wait! Why didn't I receive a notification about this video?!?!? Curse you TH-cam. Still, better late than never! Great use of those palm router bases... I knew it was worth keeping my old one and now I know why.
You should try using led strip lights along the corner. Also try salvaging old computer at surplus stores or swap meet places. Could save you money for more projects.
Great stuff as always! Always puts my brain into motion while I'm drinking that first cup of caf. The work you've put into these things is just amazing, and it's awesome that you're able to help put all that knowledge and effort to use in facilitating for all the other builders out there who want to support your efforts. Big time kudos, my friend!
I was able to get a couple of things from the store. The second of the two control panels really calls to me, but can't afford it right now. I'll have to grab it when it's available in the future. Beautiful designs Brian!
Cool product. I think your kit "B" would be great for a real world usage of putting it over a home thermostat to add some style. Your data pad idea was nice also since these designs are often just on walls.
love the look of this panel! I want to make something closely inspired by it for a personal project but I need some changes, is it possible to just buy digital files?
Just bought one of the B-type panels! It'll come in handy for an "Imperial armory" build I'm planning. Sucks that those droid interface kits sell out so quick! Could really use one.
Thank you Kal! Sorry about the droid interface kits, they go so fast. But we'll have them back up in 4 weeks. Just need a bit of time to make them, and ship them out.
Grabbed one of each! This video has me revved up to lay these out on a table and play! Where did you get that foam, just packing or is it available somewhere?
You don't have to be lucky Amy . . . just give it a try. Start simple and easy, then go from there. We have a lot of videos with smaller easier projects that don't require big tools. You should try a datapad build for your phone, that is one of my favorites. Here is the link: th-cam.com/video/ctqRLpth9Wg/w-d-xo.html
Hi Brian, nice work ! was going to buy the kit, but shipping to canada is way overprice ! 61.80$ for one kit ! i make a lot of shipping to US and it should not be that high. Maybe you can check your calculator. Thanks !
There is not a specific link. I get mine on eBay or at used electronic stores. eBay is the easiest. Just search hard drive motors and you’ll see all types. They don’t usually reference the specific size of them, so unfortunately it’s a bit of a crap shoot
Things are in motion. The owners have secured all the permits, and the builder is working on a schedule. Been a challenge but things are moving forward. We hope within a couple of months we'll be working on parts!
Yourselves and ‘Try To Finish Something’ (great channel, give him a sub) are by far my favourite TH-cam channels 👌🏼 Im in awe every video and always feel inspired to go create something… I now just need to find a channel let teaches me how to get these projects past the wife 🤔
@@TheSmugglersRoom Wow, thank you for replying to me Brian I love your channel and the stuff you do is awesome. How much do you sell the R-unit kits for?
Fair question: why hide the damage you did? Isn’t that what you want? A worn, used look? Besides, it’s a wall panel so it would get bumped and scraped a bit over time, no? I love your channel! I only wish you could post more often - and I *know* you’re doing what is possible.
Thank you. Sorry, we try to post every week however life get's in the way and sometimes it takes us a little longer to build a project, edit it, and get them uploaded. I promise we are doing our best.
@The Smugglers Room your panels with the white and blue tile lights always triggers me a bit due to their decorative nature. You might be able to install or design similar tiles that could also be a keyboard key cap for cherry MX keys then you could build an adafruit macro pad to make the keys more functional.
Did you guys get a load of that horrible gadget in Obi Wan's chest? It was his hologram phone, but it was a lame game controller or something that looked like it was from our world, from a very specific time. It took you right out of it! It was so bad, not at all Star Wars looking. After having learned from you guys and gone down the greeblie rabbit hole myself, how could they do something like that? So lazy of them. No greeblies, no aging, just gray paint and some blackouts. You do it better than them now!

Both of these kits and other geeked out goodies are available in our store. Just visit www.thesmugglersroom.com/shop-mz3gr to pick yours up!
Will there be a restock?
Appreciate the video. CA glue is good. But I like Weld-On 3 when working with acrylic. It actually melts the acrylic together creating a strong bond.
Absolutely stunning build as usual. Amazing depth and detail!
Thank you kindly!

@ really great versatile looking kits. the little rings are the riser/ spacers between the disk platters. the router pieces are a great find.

The aluminum rings on the hard drives hold the actual discs in place.
