I want to offer a subscription box service where the user pays a fixed payment on a monthly basis to discover new products. Most of these membership plugins seem to focus on locked content.

That's correct - in terms of online products, memberships and subscription boxes are typically viewed as totally different things and so membership plugins won't be what you're looking for. There should be specific software available for subscription boxes, however that's not something we have any experience with ourselves so can't make any recommendations I'm afraid!

Paid Memberships Pro is a solid free option
