Sadly, since this was made 23 years ago, there are no more Easy company vets still with us. The last one passed away a couple years ago. Rest in peace, heroes.
There are 2 videos you may want to watch: the documentary called “We Stand Alone, Together” which goes into the lives of the men and history of the Airborne. Also a “video diary” recorded by Ron Livingston (Nixon) about the boot camp training period the cast went through. All excellent!
They are going to react to We Stand Alone Together next week. The "video diary" by Ron Livingston is definitely worth watching. There are also a lot of videos out there with the Veterans and the Actors reminiscing together and separately.

I was very touched by the various videos about the BOB cast having their reunions, similar to the soldiers, and talking about how the acting experience was a significant part of their lives, not just as actors, but as human beings. There also was a very moving one showing a memorial for Dick Winters, and his burial site in the US, as well as having a marker set up in Europe.

One of my favorite parts of the documentary is the footage from the E Co reunion. Seeing the men interact is incredible.

I had the honor of meeting Maj. Winters at a Battle of the Bulge reenactment at Fort Indiantown Gap, not far from his farm in Ephrata, PA. I was in a cafe and Maj. Winters asked if he could join me. Of course, I knew who he was and welcomed him as we shared some good beer. I was portraying a German General Staff officer, was in full uniform, and he mentioned that he had noticed me in the tactical battle we'd held that afternoon. He said he saw me and as he followed me with his binoculars, everywhere I went, from unit to unit,"things happened". I replied that I was just a messenger for my commander and was in contact with him by radio. He said that I was doing everything "a good staff officer should be doing". I really appreciated that this actual hero thought I had done a good job.

Thanks for sharing that awesome story. Both my grandfathers are WW2 vets. Them and my grandmothers are all buried at Ft Indiantown Gap. Beautiful cemetery.
I had the honor of talking to Maj. Winters for a hour after I tracked him down for a media interview after the series aired. He was still sort of surprised by the reaction to the series and his sudden fame. My host for the interview was a fan too and could barely hold it together interviewing him.
Buck Compton also played baseball with Jackie Robinson at UCLA before the war.

One of my grandfathers fought through Europe with the 29th infantry division (wounded).
My other grandfather and his brother were in the 6th Marine Division and were at Okinawa. All of them lived.
Ed Shames had a cool story. He found two bottles of Cognac labeled specifically for Hitler. He took them both. He gave one to Col. Sink. The other he kept and drank at his son's bar mitzvah.
I wish they’d given us a little more Shames and Foley. Great guys!

Props to these two legends for actually not either being 100% unaware of all of this, nor some inhuman bastards who relish the death of people like ive seen before with others. AND for taking notes, yada yada. Good lads
Winters kept that sidearm. It had never been fired. What was worse for Shifty, while he was in the hospital, he had almost 2 years pay with him. Someone stole it. George Luz was an administrator for a school district in Rhode Island, he helped so many people with their maintenance challenges I guess some thought he was a maintenance man. Good stuff, fellas!
Different occasion. Winters kept the sidearm of a major (he accepted the surrender of dozens of German officers). This occasion it was a colonel who Winters allowed to keep his sidearm.
Interesting fact. Malarkey spent more days on the line than any other member of Easy Company.
I have watched this more times than I can count as well as the documentary. I cant watch the last bit with Winters and not cry. Talking about not being a hero, but serving with a company of heroes. ❤
They are all heroes! That scene also hit us bc you could tell how much his men meant to him😢

Shifty Powers’ injuries were severe enough that he was one of the last members of Easy to get home, even though the lottery that was going to send him home was 3 months before Japan surrendered.
It’s also awful that the pistols and back pay he talks about were all stolen from him while he was recovering in the hospitals. Dude deserved better.

This episode hits me the hardest. My grandfather was an aircraft mechanic in the Army Air Corps in Europe. After the war was over, he was in a C-87 carrying troops to go home. On landing the plane bounced off the runway damaging the props and wheeled into the trees and exploded. He died of his burns 3 days later.
It's heartbreaking to think of all those that died even though the fighting had stopped. His absence in my father's life and ours is something that I have thought about a lot over the years.
I'm glad you guys got so much from this series. I really enjoyed how perceptive and attentive ya'll were to such a great and important show.

Something that comes up in the last episode that is not fully explained is the Adjusted Service Rating Score...which is what the "points" they keep referring to is about. The Army needed a system to prioritize the people that were deployed overseas, and decide in what order folks would get to go home, since not everyone could go home at the same time. The system heavily prioritized people with children under the age of 18 to get them home as soon as possible, and focused on medals awarded and time in service overseas as other criteria.👍

8:45 Say what you will about giving access to a wine cellar to a guy with a drinking problem - Winters' doing so for Nixon was probably one of the best bro moments of the 20th century.
The last surviving member of the WW2 complement of Easy Company was Bradford C. Freeman (born 1924), who was a mortarman (I believe) and who attained the rank of Private, First Class. He died on July 3, 2022, at the age of 97. And with that, the entire WW2 complement of Easy Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, has passed into history.
Gentlemen, and all the other soldiers you represented - thank you. Thank you for your service. Thank you for sharing your stories with us.

You guys live near where Maj. Winters lived later in life in Pa...I live a couple of miles in Edison NJ, where Winters worked at Nixon Nitration Works...you have to watch now.."We Stand Along Together "...it's the Documentary where the interviews were taken from at beginning of each episode...My Dad Fought the Japanese in WWII..my brother was a Medic in Vietnam..he received the Bronze Star and Purple heart for Bravery...if it wasn't for these guys and ALL Veterans...we would all either be saluting the German or Japanese flag!... they did nothing less than save the World, and in return America only asked for enough land to bury our dead...God Bless Them and America
The series did a great job giving stories to all the main soldiers. It's easy to forget guys like John Martin and Babe. Most reactors didn't blink when Babe and Martin showed up at the end, but you guys still gave them some recognition.
It was only right that we gave everyone the respect & recognition that they deserved. During the editing, there was no way i (swizz) was gonna cut anybody out from that.
Lots of Band of Brothers stuff at the Gettysburg museum of History, I was just there a couple of weeks back and met Matthew Leitch who played Talbert. There's a statue to Winters in Ephrata. Lots of rabbit holes to go down, History Hacks did zooms with the cast during the pandemic. 5hours worth, and a symposium at the WW2 museum in New Orleans two summers ago on TH-cam 7 hours long of panels with cast, crew and family members of the guys.

Among the best reactions to BoB I've seen, guys, and that's saying a lot because I've watched almost every one that's here on TH-cam. I hope you move on to The Pacific. It's about the war with the Japanese and it was BRUTAL. A completely different kind of war. You guys would be great!
Several of the men who are in Band of Brothers -- including Bill Guarnere and Babe Heffron -- were from Pennsylvania. Both Guarnere and Heffron were from Philadelphia (and lifetime fans of the Phillies).
A lot of Easy men were from PA. Rod Strohl, Winters, Harry Welsh, Strayer, Foley, Toye, Blythe, Lesniewski... I understand that Pennsylvania had the second largest population in the US. NY was first.
Albert Blythe was also from PA, but the actor couldn’t do the Penn accent, so they made him southern!
My grandfather had 72 points but he entered the war so late that he would eventually be released simply because the war was over. He won two Bronze Stars (not sure what for) and he didn't talk about it much.
Winters would say later in his life that he could still see the face of that young soldier at the crossroads as clear as if it happened yesterday. So, yeah, that image stayed with him the rest of his life. He didn't regret shooting him because that was part of the war but he hated that it had to happen.

I've been inside the eagles Nest and inside that elevator! I HIGHLY suggest going there if you ever take a trip to Europe, it is one if the most gorgeous views I've ever seen. Obviously it's very touristy these days, but you can walk around on the hillside and everything atleast when I was there.
My guys, Band of Brothers is the BEST the 2nd time through. Watch it on your own, and when you recognize every character starting with episode one, BoB hits even harder than the first time through.

You are the first guys to react so intensely to Webster being lost at sea. I felt the same way. Webster narrated Episode 8 (Hagenau) so well, like a true writer. Band of Brothers author Stephen Ambrose drew a lot of information from Webster's memoir "Parachute Infantry: An American Paratrooper's Memoir of D-Day and the Fall of the Third Reich". Helluva writer.
Websters death hurt! Being lost at sea was one of the last things that we thought would happen!
I watched this series several times since it came out, but it'd been a few years. I came across your channel when you were on episode 2, and ended up watching it again with you guys. My new favorite reaction channel for sure. No screaming or fake bits; just two smart, chill, real dudes.
I'd like to see you cover Generation Kill sometime. Not as classic as BoB or The Pacific, but more relevant to "our" generations take on the great war of their lives.

If yall watch the pacific yall are going to love it. It’s a lot more psychological imo than band of brothers, and focuses on individual experiences and feelings
Since you guys are close by: Winters died in 2011 at age 92 and was buried in Ephrata, PA. We just had remembrance day here in the Netherlands and I think it's important that we keep remembering the men that gave their lifes for our freedom
These men were asked to do the impossible by fighting and dying in the deadliest conflict in human history. They returned back to the United States after many years of fighting in Europe, Asia, and Africa, asked for nothing in return, and simply went back to work. Words will never do it justice to think of the heroism of these men, some as young as 15, who lied about their age just so they could serve. Its fitting that they are known by the name of 'the greatest generation'.
The scene with the older German soldier on the road talking about his war experiences while directing traffic with an America soldier was German Military Police. That was what that big silver badger around his neck says (it goes back to the 18th century). He was still military police and they helped the Allied occupation forces maintain order with the other German soldiers who had surrendered and were heading home. The German Military Police were kept in operational service long after the war officially ended.
Major Winters is buried in Ephrata, PA. I went to visit it and pay my respects a few years ago.

As the son of a ww2 vet, I am so glad you guys watched BoB's...... my dad's generation was Bad A$$ !! Yet were Very humble... in their words " we just had a job to do so we could get back home.."

In reality, Major Winters did accept the Colonel's sidearm. He related in a documentary later that he observed that the pistol had never been fired. As he said, "There was no blood on it."
I really loved watching this with you both - I was also impressed with how many small details and nuanced situations that you picked up on immediately - it takes most people multiple watches to catch things you guys caught right away, including me. It's good to see people, so young and far removed from this time, show a real interest and investment in the stories of WWII vets and the sacrifices they made to defend freedom. One tip: If/when you watch The Pacific, make sure to get the version that includes the Tom Hanks' and the vets commentary before each episode - so much invaluable background and info that you don't want to miss. I second the comment that you absolutely must watch what "We Stand Alone Together". It is a 1 hour long documentary ,which includes many of the interviews we saw at the beginning of each episode , where the men describe these battles in great detail. It really puts everything into context when you hear directly from the men who were actually there fighting.
watch The Pacific next. you’ll see how crazy it is that Nixon and Welsh were casually talking about going to Japan and back. in reality, and invasion of mainland Japan would’ve essentially amounted to a death sentence
An amazing reaction to a very special series, grat job guys. You made a reference to seeing a trailer that mentioned some guys who could not join the war killing themselves. I think you may have seen the trailer for Hacksaw ridge and mistaken it for BoB. Hacksaw ridge is an amazing film and I highly recommend giving it a watch.

Easy Company is the most ironic name in military history. From D-DAY all the way to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, there was nothing Easy about it. I never want things I love to end, but you want the pain to end for these Men, and the peace to begin. The German Field Marshall's speech is actually what ties the entire concept of of the series together unexpectedly. I implore you to see "We Stand Alone Together" and Ron Livingston's (Nixon) Bootcamp Diary. It makes you appreciate the series even more unbelievably. You also need to watch "The Fallen of WW2" for perspective on the scale of this tragedy. "Were you a hero in the War Grandpa? Grandpa says no, but I served in a company of heroes" Near tears every time. Currahee! ♠

Sadly there are no living members of the original unit alive today. Last member passed away in 2022.

Malarkey was supposed to be included in the baseball scenes at the end, but Scott Grimes who plays him, missed his flight to Austria for the filming, and he's said it's one of the biggest regrets in his life.

Thank you so much for the breakdown it makes much more sense now since reading through this. I know for some people it took years to get all those points and probably still didn’t hit that many points. It would be better to not even know how many points you had I would think. Constantly counting and trying to get more points to get home would feel like it would put more stress on top of what you had on hand, which was just survive the day.
When the US Army quit using jeeps and replaced them with the Humvee, people recalled that jeeps could be deadly in accidents. Jeeps flipped over easily and had no seat belts.
An uncle let a young inexperienced soldier drive the jeep in Korea, flipped the jeep and uncle ended up in a full body cast!

Something to keep in mind for 'The Pacific' is that side of the war was completely different and more brutal than how the war was fought in Europe.
The Pacific is very heavily focused on the horrors of war and how war will effect, and eventually, break a man's soul. It is a very sobering and depressing series, but also very important to experience as it reminds us that even in the best case scenario of men surviving war without bodily harm, their souls are damaged forever.
A bit calmer final episode but after all that its nice to see these guys with clean uniforms and no trees exploding.

Once again, excellent job of reacting this series! You guys made me laugh when you almost fell off your chairs when you heard "Hershey, Pennsylvania", LOL. Just so you know, Richard "Dick" Winters died on January 2, 2011 - aged 92 - in Palmyra, Pennsylvania - according to Wikipedia.

Thank you for watching this series through. History isn't taught in school anymore. This series portrayed a group of men in this conflict. There are so many other stories - both black and white for WW2. But the bottom line is the fight was for the right to live free. Not just America but for others.
We appreciate you & it was only right that we did this series. We both love history & learning so this was great to experience together w/ each other & also w/ you all! You got to learn about the past to not repeat it🙏🏾
