These great performers will perfectly understand Haydn‘s aesthetics , his intent of composition, and his spirit.
So this performance is absolutely stunning

Geniale Musik.

I again cannot believe there are no comments for this wonderful performance, Haydn is one of the greats but for some reason he is not popular. I am Mozarted out, this is so refreshing. .

The young Beethoven was profoundly influenced by Haydn's late symphonic writing

@@darionbuck8864 Yes, young Ludwig famously said that. Haydn didn't find much time to give him lessons, literally, but there's a difference in being taught and being influenced. The young Ludwig was greatly exposed to and admired Haydn's latest symphonies when they were published. This shows clearly in Beethoven's early style.

@@clavichord I'm more of a romantic era fan and have a really hard time getting into Haydn, but just discovered the 49th symphony which just seems waaay ahead of its time. Very beethoven and romantic. Any of the later symphonies you can point me to?

@@darionbuck8864 You are not the only one having a hard time with Haydn, because we look back on Haydn's music through the prism of 19th century Romantism, which is also my favourite era in Classical music, by the way. It is fairer to judge Haydn's music by comparing it with his contemporaries and what came before, how he developed and influenced the symphony and especially the string quartet. Some of the most proto-Beethovian Haydn symphonies are amongst his later symphonies, from the 90s onward, Haydn's late string quartets often go very close towards being in the early proto-Romantic style and are Haydn at his most personal. In my opinion, the crowning glory of Haydn as composer was his penultimate oratorio "The Creation" finished in around 1798, I believe. Despite Beethove falling out with Haydn, during a later performance of The Creation, which Haydn could only partly attend due to old age, Beethoven once more let his great respect for Haydn come to the forfront, a respect which many of Beethoven's contemporaries also had. Beethoven, despite his genius, was just not always necessarily an easy nor diplomatic person to get along with during his lifetime.

Ciao amici!!

I enjoyed this performance. This is a fine ensemble. Why aren't there more video recordings with this group? And if you enjoy classical music, who wouldn't enjoy Haydn? Great symphonies, string quartets, baryton trios. Piano works. Never a "tragic" composition.

Wonderful performance of a great late work from Haydn. I’m surprised this video wasn’t suggested to me earlier by YT since I watch so much Haydn. I find his music more varied, more interesting, and more enjoyable than Mozart.

Agreed. Do you know Boccherini? Known at the time as "Mrs. Haydn," his style bridges baroque/classical. Worth some investigation. Perhaps start with the string quintets.

Boccherini is a fine composer, but he’s no bridge from anywhere to anywhere else, he’s 100% a Classical composer ie Haydn/Mozart period c.1750-1800.

88-92 are somewhat neglected because they are flanked by the Paris and the London ones and have no tittle. It is absurd, but it is the simple reason.

    • @elaineblackhurst1509
      @elaineblackhurst1509 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Symphony 88 is occasionally referred to as ‘Letter V’ across the English-speaking world, whilst Symphony 92 is known universally as the ‘Oxford’ symphony.
Neither of these two symphonies are in any way ‘…neglected’, indeed, they are two of Haydn’s most popular; 90 is also quite well known with its false fake ending, and only 89, and 91 could accurately really be said to be overshadowed by the sets 82-87, 93-98, and 99-104.
