DOOM deserves to be on this list; after about a decade of tediously-paced, two-weapon-limited, point-A-to-point-B level design, crouch-behind-something-and-wait-to-heal Call of Duty-infected FPS games, it showed the world that fast and violent gameplay in huge levels full of secrets which rewarded exploration and a main character who can move like he's on butter-coated ice skates while carrying enough weaponry to supply a small coup and simply does not give a fuck about the story was something that could still be done well and that people still had an appetite for.

I really wouldn't say its the gold standard for JRPGs this generation, maiy due to the abysmal story (also why I think P4G is the better modern persona game). I do agree that its Turn-based combat is some of the best around but it did not single-handedly make it relevant again when games like Octopath traveler and Trails series have also exist and are just as great of games.
Check out Bravely Default 2, it's another recent classic style jRPG. The story is super generic, a bunch of teenagers have to get together and kill a dark god with the power of friendship - like basically every jRPG ever. But it's job system is excellent. You can make yourself incredibly overpowered with the right job mixes.
@@johnwrath3612 Buyer beware though - I bought it after playing the downloadable demo and wish I hadn't because it's obscenely difficult without hours upon hours upon hours of the most tedious grinding. Bear in mind I've played through Final Fantasies IV-X, Tactics, Chrono Trigger, Octopath and a few other JRPGs as well as plenty of Western RPGs, so it's not like I'm unfamiliar with the genre. I was relieved to hear that the overwhelming majority of players agree on this. The standard battles are normal, difficulty wise, but the boss battles are outrageously difficult - I'm sure you can eventually become overpowered with certain jobs but you can't get to that point without either grinding basic battles for said hours upon hours or being a 1%-er wizard (who likely doesn't realise they're the minute minority and insists that it's fine without understanding their unusual aptitude for the system). I feel I wasted the time I spent leading up to a certain royal battle in the early game, because I just can't get past it and found grinding in this game to be painfully repetitive and unengaging. The regular boss battles are at a level that should be reserved for optional bosses; you should be able to progress through the story of a game with *some* grinding but not the amount of hours I'd need to dedicate just to stand a chance. That isn't what I want from any RPG and isn't what I got from any of the RPGs I played - none of them. The game doesn't respect your time and doesn't give you enough reason to love it. I would recommend so many other JRPGs over BD2, so I caution readers not to be swayed by the one person rather than the crowds of people who'll back up what I'm saying. I couldn’t agree more. I’ve put hundreds and hundreds of hours into it and have loved every minute of it. It really makes me sad that people still think it has microtransactions and awful progression.
seeing that you obviously took inspiration from Hotline Miami in your video, I’m surprised we didn’t see it on this list. Hotline Miami 2 has easily changed up the whole indie genre in terms of story telling, soundtrack and gameplay mechanics. Not to mention that is was a big inspiration for TLOU2.
Perhaps it was a mistake, but I just can't begin to understand how Hollow Knight is not on this list, even as an honourable mention. That game completely shattered expectations for how much quality and content you could hope for in an indie game

Only game I disagree on is fnaf, people would have done lets plays eventually whether it was fnaf or some other game that released and was good enough. No point in playing it again once you've beaten it.
Honestly, I'd have liked to see Hollow Knight on here. I understand why it wasn't as it didn't really break any new ground, but it truly is a masterpiece. Most may see it as a another indie metroidvania (I was also surprised to see Ori and the Blind Forest wasn't mentioned), but it really is a fascinatingly deep, dark, and extremely well-thought-out world to explore. Having several Souls-like elements and an obscure yet compelling lore, coupled with a simple yet gorgeous art style and amazing soundtrack and sound design made this 2017 title my favorite game of all time. With an extremely passionate yet very welcoming and non-toxic fanbase, Hollow Knight is the perfect example of a slow-burn success. With it's sequel Hollow Knight: Silksong coming out in the near future (hopefully), the hype around this vastly under-valued indie game is certainly not to be underappreciated.
Honestly, i cant agree more with this list. Def would have included titanfall 2, and maybe warframe, but otherwise this didnt feel like corporatist bullshit. It felt like real gamers talking about games
@@Wholesome_videos675 titanfall 2 is imo best shooter ever made. Unfortunately media presence for the game wasnt there. The warframe point i can understand, even though it is an incredibly successful game. I fuckin hate how titanfall 2's community died though.
But to make a point, titanfall spawned its sequel, titanfall 2. It directly spawned apex, and indirectly spawned a short and turbulent era of hyper mobility shooters: Lawbreakers, Call of duty IW, COD AW, COD BO3. Most importantly, it allowed console players to experience mobility-based shooters for the first time, which was almost entirely an indie-based market on steam
@ImSo_ToXiiC I would say as a singleplayer shooter DOOM Eternal is the best FPS Game in my opinion but as a multiplayer shooter I totally agree with Titanfall 2.
Well it did. Overpromise, release early, incomplete and full of bugs then fix fix fix fix. It bucked the trend by actually becoming something worth playing *cough*Anthem & Battlefront 1 and 2*cough*
Remember that it isn't a list of best games, just of most influential ones. Definetely *Breath of the Wild* must be here. *Super Mario Odyssey* is perfect, but it hasn't been as influential as others. Maybe *Animal Crossing New Horizons* should be too. *Skyrim* just was released before, but it's been really important too.

Doom 2016 or Eternal should have been on this list, they brought back the fps genre in a huge way. The list is null in void with out those 2 games on here.
I don't get how Overwatch changed the genre when it tried to be tf2, what it actually did really well. Even the creators said that if you compare overwatch with tf2 it is a compliment for Overwatch cuz TF2 is the game that changed and made this genre and that it is just a great game
I think it propelled team shooters into a new light. TF2 came first and revolutionized FPS's. Overwatch took what TF2 did and propelled it into a larger, more mainstream focus.

It will always be linked in our minds with this ongoing bastard.
As always an amazing video but I gotta disagree regarding no two Overwatch matches feeling the same. The game is incredible but the matches can definitely be samey
Recency bias aside, Among Us might've been one to consider for the list, considering the impact it has had on the streaming community, TH-cam, and social media platforms. There were certainly better games, but it's had a pretty big impact since it was discovered
Lots of people have said it but I'm saying it again. Hollow Knight is one of the best games ever made and it should have been on this list. Aside from that, great video.
I'm so glad you put TLOU 2 in here. The game is a masterpiece. I have no idea why so many people hate on it, they clearly haven't played it. Feels like cancel culture is just as present in gaming although less aware.
I don’t hate it, it’s a good game but it doesn’t deserve to be a masterpiece because the gameplay was mediocre and basic with no depth just like the first one .
What about choosing your own adventure!? ... the first time I played indigo prophecy, i saw that you didn't just listen to the story, you made the story.... or was that covered? Lol I might have missed that.

@@chillswany Yeah, now it's one of my favourites xd
@@holake4456 I got a refund when it came out and i bought it but after seeing some gameplay i want to buy it again lol
@@chillswany I want to buy it at the end of this month, i played a bit because of a little Game Pass subscription someone gifted me. I love No Man's Sky
Maybe Super Mario Odyssey should have been in the list, it being the only mainstream modern collectathon and still being such an enjoyment. It has its flows, of course, but i think it pushed the collectathon genre forward, and its impressive because it is an almost dead genre.
Personally my generation was defined by
1. Horizon Zero Dawn
2. The Witcher 3
3. Uncharted 4
4. God of War
Battleground 2 did make a great comeback though.
Playing through Hotline Miami 1+2 during the lockdown was my 2020 top gaming experience
I absolutely agree with that Miyamoto quote. More game companies need to embody that wisdom.
Yeah, I totally agree with that.
SEGA!!! Haven't you learnt your lesson yet?! All you needed to do is read this quote from a NINTENDO developer!
Oh yeah, Hear we go...nostalgia time!
I've played some of these games before. I haven't played all of them though, so I'm going to give this everything I've got.
Ahhh Rocket League. Eternal fun all round.
Rocket League is that game that you buy play for 5 minutes and then never play it again.
@@RealJesus like FIFA 21 then ?
@@RealJesus or playy for 5000 hours and feel like you played for 50.
Animal Crossing? No. Stardew Valley? Hell yes!
Perhaps it was a mistake, but I just can't begin to understand how Hollow Knight is not on this list, even as an honourable mention. That game completely shattered expectations for how much quality and content you could hope for in an indie game
GTA V I know it was released on the previous generation but it is more popular now than most games released this year.
It's a 7th gen game though. Maybe GTA online could be here.
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is my favourite game of the PS4 generation
Fatalis is one of the best bossfights in the generation in my opinion
@@davioliveira9292 100% agree
My top 10 games of the generation:
1- God of War 2018
2-Metal Gear Solid V
3-Sekiro: shadows Die Twice
4-Bloodborne
5-Red Dead Redemption 2
6-The Witcher 3
7- Ghost of Tsushima
8- Titanfall 2
9- Dishonored 2
10- Uncharted 4
2:36 THERE HE IS
Nier Automata should have been there. Along with Bloodborne it's my game of this gen. A truly unique experience. That soundtrack alone is generation defining
Blood borne is on the list
@@CodyKing45 I know. Was just stating that nier automata should be there. That and Bloodborne are my faves of the PS4 gen. I wasn't stating that Bloodborne should be on the list, as it's already there
The Last of Us 2 wasn't influential at all, nor defined anything in this generation. God of War already did everything a great PS exclusive could be capable of and better.
Tottaly agree, all it did was split the fanbase in half in terms of the story, Wich is the most important part.
You really had to put in the outdated battlefront 2 "pAy 2 WIn" statement
Pride and accomplishment
Stop simping for EA, they would kill you for 12 cents.
@@theonlybilge Simping for EA? No. I just think that Battlefront 2 is a good game now (which it is)
@@Leon-jx8wc
You could play the superior Battlefront 2 which never had lootboxes to begin with.
@@theonlybilge you must not have played battlefront in the last year. completley different game with no lootboxes and free dlc
@@assassination516
It's still EA. They could very well put lootboxes back in if they don't completely abandon the game and shut down the servers because they can't profit anymore,
I can't argue with most of these (even though I haven't played half of them), but I've never even heard of Dota/Dota 2 before.
Definitely gunna argue with TLOU2 being here. It’s a real dumpster fire. Everything that made the first game a good movie is gone. Now all that’s left is that same terrible and painfully shallow “gameplay” that naughty dog has been getting away with since uncharted 1.
one game I want to mention is Old School RuneScape. Single-handedly revived the fanbase and Jagex
So much content! Great video! Keep up the good work.
Only game I disagree on is fnaf, people would have done lets plays eventually whether it was fnaf or some other game that released and was good enough. No point in playing it again once you've beaten it.
What about Mario Odyssey. Brought Mario back to his sandbox 64 routes
Not even an honourable mention. Absolutely ridiculous to not include one of the highest rates games of the generation. Also persona 5.
Absolutely agree. In my top three games of all time. It also basically revived the indie metroidvania genre
Honestly, i cant agree more with this list. Def would have included titanfall 2, and maybe warframe, but otherwise this didnt feel like corporatist bullshit. It felt like real gamers talking about games
bro titan fall 2 and warframe were both fall-offs.
Last of us 2 defining this generation? Absolutely not
I knew there’d be that one person in the comments still hatin on LOU2 haha
I don’t think they were asking for your opinion on the story. It defined the graphics particularly, but a lot more.
@@playpundit4431 yep
The complains can say otherwise to that statement.
I was just scrolling through comments looking for that one person that still has a rage boner for TLOU2. Lmao
The game is a masterpiece, deal with it.
Nice video...
Except the 2018 God of War was NOT a reboot, it was a Sequel as it acknowledges the events of the previous games.
It's a soft reboot
Hollow Knight / Ori redefined metroidvania in many ways. Classic RPGs rebirth also, but they are pretty much dead again (
I love how Smash shows up twice in the honourable mentions :)
How do I find the background music that was in this video?
"20 Videos Games that Defined a Generation"
*Descriptions shows No Man Sky*
Well it did.
Overpromise, release early, incomplete and full of bugs then fix fix fix fix.
It bucked the trend by actually becoming something worth playing *cough*Anthem & Battlefront 1 and 2*cough*
Most of the entries fail to fit that title anyway.
@@plkrtn Yeah it definitely does fit that description. Certainly problems that have come to be pretty commonplace in the last generation.
It did just not in a good way.
@@plkrtn battlefront 2 actually turned out really good after all the fixes.
For me, Titanfall 2 has dominated for me. Unexpectedly good and really really underrated. I still play it to this day.
Same here. BT-7274 is in my personal opinion the greatest character out of all of them. May we see him in the next game
Stardew Valley over New Horizons for influence, for sure.
@@m.f.m.8290 On the industry I agree. On the people, it would be Animal Crossing. It sold over 30 millions during the first covid months.
i feel this list is interchangeable with many games. But Persona 5 absolutely needs to be on this. Top 5 at least. its miles ahead of FF7R, and even tho i do like TLOU2, id put Persona 5 ahead of it.
top 3 for me:
Bloodborne
Persona 5
Witcher 3
Its a glorified Visual novel
@@NoiseGamesLP
Its not even that good of a novel
The the story is predicteble , the charecters are one dimensional anime tropes and the villeins are just over the top cartoon.
The game is made to trick edgy teens to think it's more mature that it actually is.
Honestly if you're over 15 year's old and you unironically like the games writing I just feel bad for you.
Doom 2016 or Eternal should have been on this list, they brought back the fps genre in a huge way. The list is null in void with out those 2 games on here.
this has been a fun pallet cleanser to the Unus Annus Goodbye stream. Thank you. Memento Mori.
Memento Mori to you friend
Memento mori
23:54 well, that didn’t age well
I don't get how Overwatch changed the genre when it tried to be tf2, what it actually did really well.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a masterpiece! 🐐
Put a list in the description in future please
I don't know how The Last of Us Part 2 was a generation-defining game, but cool list otherwise.
It’s a technical marvel regardless of the story, have you actually played it?
@@SquintyEyedBoab Yeah, I have played it, and it was just an inferior version of the first game. And besides, being a "technical marvel" isn't enough anymore, especially when most AAA games already look good.
Seeing No Man's Sky being part of this list absolutely blew me away! I cannot believe that such an underrated and unpopular game could actually make it on this list. I recommend anybody who watches this video and reads this comment to give it a try and experience the wonders of the Cosmos.
Ps. I wasn't surprised that FNAF was on this list. It's just that good as a whole.
PPs. Titanfall 2 is also a super amazing experience. Please play that as well, reader
I'm surprised that Monster Hunter World didn't get a mention, since it showed lifestyle games like Destiny how it was done.
That last month before launch for Animal Crossing......
You could see the pending pandemic and New Horizon's release merging and....it did.
Switched(lol) both me and my wife's copies to digital from physical to ensure we had the game we'd waited years for.
It's purely first world problems but it honestly lessened the burden of....the world collapsing upon itself for my family.
Both of us played an unhealthy amount and our kids enjoyed watching.
It will always be linked in our minds with this ongoing bastard.
Last of us 2 the definition of how NOT to sequel.
I feel that Slender the eight pages deserves a spot in this list more than fnaf
Fnaf 1 came out in 2014 while Slender the eight pages was made in 2012 would 100% agree that it should take fnafs place on this list.
Are you up in your own comment section agreeing with yourself? Lol 😆
@@AS34N No? Just pointing out facts
Good list actually. Maybe cause this isn't a rank of quality but influence which is less subjective
As always an amazing video but I gotta disagree regarding no two Overwatch matches feeling the same. The game is incredible but the matches can definitely be samey
All about persona 5, zelda and witcher 3 for me
Recency bias aside, Among Us might've been one to consider for the list, considering the impact it has had on the streaming community, TH-cam, and social media platforms. There were certainly better games, but it's had a pretty big impact since it was discovered
I remember 2015-2017 were kinda rough for the generation. microtransactions and loot boxes were out of control
Battle front 2 deserves to be on the best list as a perfect example of how to fix a game
TripleJump: please stop making fnaf videos
MatPat:- no... I don't think I will
I legit thought this was the same person speaking. Is there really two different guys talking? Lol
Lots of people have said it but I'm saying it again. Hollow Knight is one of the best games ever made and it should have been on this list. Aside from that, great video.
Look how depressing and gray the icon looks. Very few distinct characters.
I'm so glad you put TLOU 2 in here. The game is a masterpiece. I have no idea why so many people hate on it, they clearly haven't played it. Feels like cancel culture is just as present in gaming although less aware.
Yeah just a bunch of brain dead people to me lmao
On point bro !
I don’t hate it, it’s a good game but it doesn’t deserve to be a masterpiece because the gameplay was mediocre and basic with no depth just like the first one .
I love that none triplejump/vidiots people will be bamboozled about the worst awards lol
Loved Dad of Boy, 10/10 parenting simulator.
What about choosing your own adventure!? ... the first time I played indigo prophecy, i saw that you didn't just listen to the story, you made the story.... or was that covered? Lol I might have missed that.
i needed this video just to cheer me up since its been really rough for me to cope as of late and feel like a loser. Being in tears daily and not sleeping has been horrible. Just having this to take my mind off it even for a little bit. Thanks guys
Same here, I hope things get better for you
Yeah. 5 nights with Freddy got really big fast. Even a movie with Nicolas cage.
Ben and Peter as Kratos and Atreus is the best
Doom and Titanfall 2. Best fpesses of this generation for me.
shadow warrior truly Is criminally underrated AF!
Titanfall 2 is so good! It's such a shame that it didn't sell as well as it deserved to
