    I'm not a professional artist, but when it comes to artist grade watercolor paints, in my opinion I don't think one brand is "better" than another as they all have different properties so ultimately it just comes down to personal preferences. I always thought Sennelier was the "best" brand but I just find them too "gummy" and therefore hard to work with, though undoubtedly the colors are very beautiful and I do use them from time to time. Personally my go to paints are Winsor and Newton, and Holbein because of their consistency and vibrancy, and they flow and dry on the paper exactly how I expect/want. I like Schmincke for their super granulating range, and Daniel Smith for their specialty mineral colors which are unique. Isaro do some nice iridescent colors.

      Oh absolutely! I totally agree with you! That's why I couldn't pick a winner in the end! :) Ultimately it comes down to whether or not you like the color, if id does what you want it to, when you want it to, and how lightfast it is! Thank you for watching!

      I literally just love them all.🤣🤣 I have favorite colors in each brand. Like Holbein has my favorite Davy's Gray, W&N and Daniel Smith have my fave Quin Gold (I've been stocking up on DS Quin Gold and Quin Burnt Orange so I can have my favorite pigment to paint sunlight, PO48, loooong after it's finally gone), Sennelier has my fave Chinese Orange and Greenish Umber.......I could go on but I believe you get the point.🤣🤣

      @@mie... I think a lot of people don't realize that in the begining. I know I didn't! I thought, "these area artist grade! They must be the best paints ever!" When in reality, you really still need to check each pigment in the tube out!

      I think different colors in different brands must behave differently. I had a set of QOR that I hated. It was a set of introductory colors. They were almost chalky. They were worse than some of the student grade paints I have. I even went back this morning and looked at my swatches of them and several of them are definitely not great (I did notice that several colors looked fine, re-looking at them). But the two you tried out looked fantastic, better than the Daniel Smith. Maybe I got several bad tubes or maybe some of their paints are just different. I would blame it on the paper but with some looking good and some terrible I don’t think it was that. I wonder if anyone else has had a similar experience with QOR or any other brands?
      I loved the way those Schmincke granulating colors looked. I want to try some of those out!
      Thanks for a really fun video!

    Pigments can look completely different based on the size of the granule, how much heat was used in processing it, etc. That is how the same pigment can look completely different in different paints.☺☺

    Thanks for taking us on a tour of various watercolour paint brands that we might never come across on our own. My watercolours have been Winsor & Newton (nowadays it's just the professional paints - I dropped their Cotman once they moved their manufacturing from Europe to China) and Daniel Smith. Oh and I think I also have a single tube of Mission Gold orange somewhere - it came as a complimentary gift with one of my orders from Blick. I'm relatively happy with my two main brands but it's always so interesting to see what's available on the other side (especially whether the grass is greener LOL). Best wishes, Brian.

    Greetings from Germany, the German brand Schmincke has the lightfastness rates also on the packaging, these are the stars. 5 stars are the best. And the pigment numbers are always on the tube, oftentimes on the side and tiny. I find them to have a real good quality. The colours are more natural compared to Daniel smiths ones. I don’t kniw how to say it, like not artificially high chroma and bang in the face…. I hope you understand what I mean 🙈
    Love your effort to do this giant comparison. I love Sennelier and M.Graham, both honey based reactivate like nothing real. Pigmented and wow. And Schmincke and Winsor & Newton. After so many comparisons and a hell lot of spend money I found these are working for me the best…. It is difficult to find the right thing sometimes…. So thank you for this.

    Thank you for the comparisons and opinions. I swatched my watercolor palette yesterday and put it in the thrift store box. It was a very cheap department store set, so not even student grade. I'm going to get a mid-level set of something in the near future. What I appreciate is seeing how the paint looks on the paper both wet and dry, without having to buy anything myself. I learned frugality as a hard and fast rule growing up, and that has not served me well as I've started doing more art.

      I highly recommend that mission gold set I was testing for beginners or people who don't want to spend the big bucks! It works wonderfully, the pigments and the light fastness ratings are right on the tube and that set of 24 colors I was using was I think only $40 when I bought it? It's very high quality!

    Pigments - for example PV19 - are sometimes used in many different colours so it isn’t safe to assume that two different PV19’s can be compared. They may be entirely different colours of pink/red/magenta/violet depending on how the pigment is milled/ particle size/ binders used

    hi! i’m not sure if you’ve found an answer already, but I know why the winsor & newton aqua green tube is just labeled as “phtalo!”
    the reason is that the pigment is pretty new, so it doesn’t have an industry-standard pigment code yet, but it does come from phthalocyanine, which is where the other phthalo blue pigments come from :) winsor & newton just call it phtalo coz there isn’t a specific code, but the chemical compound is phthalo (not sure why they changed the spelling tho lol)
    I believe this version of phthalocyanine originated in the automotive industry (so like car paint colors lol). - that’s also the reason why quinacridone gold (PO49) is discontinued. the pigment was mainly manufactured for the automotive industry, and art supply manufacturers bought the pigment to make paints. but since orange cars aren’t in demand, the pigment manufacturers don’t have a reason to spend money to make PO49 (especially since they can make cheaper, more modern orange pigments). and so there’s no more quinacridone gold left for artist paint manufacturers to buy and make paint with :(

    • @winterwoodsstudio
      @winterwoodsstudio  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Wow that's awesome! Thank you so much for the info! I wondered what was going on! Also, in case you are wondering, I reached out to a rep from Daniel smith about the quinacridone gold and whether I should stock up, because it's one of my favorites! And they said they purchased enough raw material to make the paint for decades and not to worry! I don't know about any other companies though. I might have to reach out to Golden, because I use their quinacridone gold to tone my canvases all the time!

      I suggest you buy the box and the pans separately. You can choose the colours you really need. Schmincke generally put many opaque colours into their sets. At least it was the case a couple of years ago. I don't know if they still do it. As for me, Schmincke Horadam paints are great and rewet easily. They use the same paint for both tubes and pans, and they also have transparent versions of earth tones in their range. However, if you prefer "right in your face"-colours, then Daniel Smith or Winsor & Newton Professional watercolours might be the better option. Meanwhile, I pick my favourite colours from the three brands. Greetings from 🇩🇪🤗

    So nice review. Thank you so much. I tried most of the brands reviewed here. But there’s one thing I need to correct about Shinhan watercolours. Shinhan watercolours represented here are not their artist grade colours and known as SWC however their artist grade brand is named PWC and fully pigmented. I’ve been using pwc for about 5 years they’re both well priced and above the average artist grade watercolours. What I learned so far is it’s best not to stuck a single brand/maker there are so many great makers out there. Last but not the least if you haven’t tried I recommend M. Graham and Holbein. Cheers from Ontario.

      @@winterwoodsstudio I also should mention that the Q. Magenta, PR202 from DS, is a pigment that as far as I know, nobody else sells (according to Handprint, but I haven't found any update further on that). For me, that makes it something of a collector's item. To get closer to the other PR122s, you'd want to choose DS Q Lilac. I've never found a reason to own Q Lilac, since I can pretty much get it by toning Q. Rose down with a little Q. Magenta. Whether one paint or another works depends on what you're going for, for sure.

    Thanks, Amy! Schminke super granulators are on my short list once my no-buy is over! That might be awhile though. I have Daniel Smith from years ago when I tried learning to watercolor the first time...lol...They've all dried out, so it takes a some getting into the tubes. And I have a bunch of sticks as well, because I figured out back then that the sticks were more economical than the tubes. I just need to figure out how to really use them. The sticks are about 15 years old...you would think I would know how by now...🤣 I am pretty sure that by the time my no-buy is over, I will have that figured out!

    Aqua Green by W&N and a few other pigments by various other watercolor companies don't have pigment numbers bc they have not been assigned by the pigment manufacturers. I love W&N Aqua Green...I have several tubes so I never run out...lol. Though its highly pigmented and staining so a little goes a long way.

Yet, I do you want your video to do well so I’m leaving a comment and a like as soon as I could. I will say paint preference it’s just that a preference if you use professional grade paints your pictures will last and that is really the reasons to pick a paint are a personal preference of color flow, stickiness, price, and ease of procurement. The Sennelier Emerald Green has binder issues for me. And it won’t dry down completely in pan for me as well. It just migrates in my palette.
    For brands I have no huge favourites. I gravitate to punchy transparent or soft opaques in colors.

    I bought a Sennelier pan set and all the colors are beautiful. I really like the dioxasine purple in this set, it could have been a contender in the purples. I really do have a lot of brands of watercolour paints and the one I like working with the least is Qor. They're hard to work with, the binder probably tends to bubble up like there's soap in it and my rinse water is full of bubbles. What's more, I find them super staining, and once they've been placed, they're quite difficult to fade. It's the last set I think of when I want to do watercolours, every time I try again and the result is always ugly, with traces of bubbles here and there, less so on cotton paper. Perhaps those who are used to working with ink find it easier with Qor.

    • @winterwoodsstudio
      @winterwoodsstudio  ปีที่แล้ว

      Huh. I haven't had that happen with the two that I have by QoR but then again, I only have two. I HAVE had that happen with both the Daniel Smith Genuine Fuchsite as weel as their Cerulean Blue though. Maybe it just happens with certain colors or mixes? I don't have much experience with other brands, other than Daniel Smith, so I can't really say. But thank you so much for the feedback, and for taking the time to leave a comment!

    • @winterwoodsstudio

      Do mean with the whole Primatek line and how they ended up having other pigments in them? You know, as a former jeweler, I always assumed they had pigments in them, knowing the vibrancy of say crushed amethyst and knowing it was pretty dull. I never checked into the details of it, because I never bought any (I may have one). When it came out, I wasn't at all surprised, so I didn't feel upset. But understand how other people were upset. I am planning to branch out to some other brands too but I will use these up first. They were too expensive not to. I also don't have a problem buying certain favorite colors again or specific pigments to follow along with a class, which is what these were for. But obviously, I am testing other brands for a reason!

    • @melissaaldosari8024
      @melissaaldosari8024 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @Winter Woods Studio Yes. And the way they market them as Genuine. The owner/ceo showed no sign of remorse when interviewed about knowingly misleading their customers.
      If I remember correctly, the interview I saw of him, he didn't even answer the question. Just skirted it like a politician.
      They charge very high prices for their primatek line.
      Most watercolorists don't have the knowledge base to realize that there must be added pigments. I think that is how it came out, someone knew there must be added pigments and investigated microscopically.
      If they were just upfront with the added pigments in the first place it would be a non issue. But, maybe they wouldn't have been able to charge such a high price for them. And, that is their priority.
      But, since the truth has come out, and they haven't apologized to their customers in any way, it makes me wonder what else they may be doing that they are not being fully transparent about.
      I love their paints. It makes me so sad and disappointed.😞
      It all comes down to a matter of trust.
