Gah, this game is just so chilling- and not that there is an evil sun- but the fact that everyone knows that the world is going to burn, but they choose to ignore it in a desperate attempt to resume life as normal. The terror of realistic behavior of the people outway the surrealist aspect of the game.

@Sock H0p That or he can see viewers in some way, because population is so low, it is easier to know who is watching or not. Maybe only a few tv sets are out there and they can see who is watching anything or not easily with so few numbers left.
im more concerned about the mayor.. he behaves like an SCP 0-5, why he is in an underground bunker while al of his citizen are condemned to die torched like matches? at start i believe that he was some sort of weird inca-like high priest of a weir inca-like sun cult...but he looks more like a evil mastermind behind all of this mess

A wonderfully depressing story. The voiced segments caught me off guard, but I liked what it added to the atmosphere. A doomed, possibly already dead world held together by pointless routines. As both people you play as in the little credits segment have a ticket on them, I imagine everyone but the protagonist was dead from the start as we see him give a corpse a ticket towards the end. He could not accept that he was alone, so he believed his husband, a nearby worker, random people on the street were all still surviving. Great stuff.
Loneliness so depressing, he created people he already knew by memory and probably only up to the point they died. So his husband pestering him at the start and his reaction, being that he knew they were dead, but couldn't let go. Also explains the newscaster begging him not to turn off the television.

This kinda game reminds me of Lisa, that set of games really brings brutal reality and sadness into play, this game is kinda like that. Real harsh stuff, whew.

So the protagonist was to be sacrificed, but because he didn't, the town was engulfed by an angered sun and everyon burns to death? The mayor took what I assume was also their child as a sacrifice, but what a shoddy sort of cult, considering how unstable the sun is.

No, It doesn't. Dolores also has it in her ending, I think it's probably just a limitation of RPGMaker.
So I watched another playthrough and the hopelessness of the situation is doubled upon finding new dialog. During the last day with everything on fire, you can click on the fountain infront of city hall. It will give a disscription, showing that there is a mini model of the town after the water has dried out. It will then go to describe the terminal, and how the tracks end up going out of town and loop in a circle back to town. There is no way out, no escape. Everyone was waiting for nothing, it won't deliver them even if it came.
The phrase "You're gonna burn, alright." comes to mind.

Theory: They're ghosts trapped in a haunted town. They all died in a big fire. The mayor probably caused it through neglect.
The last time you talk to her, Dolores talks about how it all happened before, with most of the town dying in a big fire.

@@errortryagainlater4240 That would also explain the endings. The ending to do as your told is to not yet accept fate and repeat everything over again. You quell the flames... for now. If you decide its time to stop the routine, you let everything burn as it was supposed to.

this was a really wonderful and well-told succinct little game! personally i think the 2 endings and corresponding characters reflect possible priorities of anatoli; in the 'serve your community' ending, dolores is the one with the ticket, meaning it's her corpse that you gave the ticket to, dolores's daily banter and friendship w/ the protag being representative of his positive relationship with the people around him; the same is true in the 'burn together' ending, but with pyotr. basically, the corpse you give the ticket to being a kind of schrodinger's corpse depending on what anatoli thinks the significance of his fruitlessly giving it a ticket is. in actuality, the identity of the corpse doesn't matter, and might not have been either of them; it's what anatoli did as a final gesture, and the ending where you can control either pyotr or dolores is less literal than an imagined thing, perhaps what anatoli comforts himself with as he dies; the idea that a person he cared about received their ticket, and his last actions meant something.
So perhaps he didn't care about saving the world anymore because Pytor disappeared in the ending where he doesn't hang himself?
Pytor was the one who tried to get him to change his routine, so it makes sense he gets the ticket when the main character decides not to do what he's told.

I think it sucks these characters live in a cult in their final days of the apocalypse or stuck alternatively sacrificing somebody of their community to appease the prick of a sun god they have.
Ngl, that sounds the most realistic settings. People tend to go to religion of any kind when they feel their end, or just the apocalypse, is nearby

I think both piotyr and dolores are already dead/left before the game started, the first few days we saw from protag's imagination (his sprite drastically changed to be very ragged at the last day, also him saying "im losing it" in before the last day didn't mean he was going insane-he already was-, but he was losing his imaginary construct). And i don't know if this is a far stretch but i think they both had left or tried to leave the town when they were alive, as noted by their disappearance on the last day as well as ticket in their inventory in ending scene.
Man the pay must be good if you gotta work through near-armageddon.

I personally feel like this game is conveying feeling 'burnt out.' Routine is good. It can make us feel safe sometimes. But if that routine is never changing, it becomes monotonous and sometimes even overwhelming. Burn out affects everyone differently. Which in this game, I think it did show between both husbands and the woman. The end, I feel like is you coming to terms you're now at your limit. You need to make a choice. And you either choose to submit or come to terms with your burn out. Die by routine's hand or your own. Either way, death will come for us all at some point.
One minute in, and this is going to be depressing, isn't it?
EDIT: Ayup, it was. Something about it also makes this game feel painfully realistic to me in spite of the fantastical elements. Might be the fact that the themes of (SPOILERS BELOW)
climate tension, ramping up catastrophe you feel powerless to prevent, isolation to emprisonment within a finite space, routine maintained as a way to distract from fear, media amplifying anxiety, incapacity or refusal of those in power to provide adequate help and feeling of having been left out, are things we may have experienced, to some degree or another, those past years. This game just leaks a profound sense of weariness, if that makes sense (superb writing though).
Also I noticed that both characters we play as in the end have tickets. Which is maybe sadder than anything because a) tickets were Anatoli's thing and he's not there anymore, in either ending, and b) it's obvious at this point in time that the train is useless, and will provide no escape.
TLDR: Good times, whee!!!~

She Ra 2018 did a phenomenal job of it. Granted, it couldn't outright show most of the LGBT+ content for fear of cancellation (because sadly, like with Steven Universe, soccer parents and bigots will whine to the studios producing the content and get the show cancelled, so the producers had to candy dance around SO MUCH to get things in order) until the final episode, but contrary to what anti-SJW's will tell you, the show was never "in your face" about the queer characters.

Oh my god, imagine being trapped in a town slowly going insane as everything burns to a bleeding crisp around you, but you keep clutching onto that train ticket for the train that’ll never fucking come again, but it’s all you can do. Keep going to work. Just one more day. Keep waking up. Just one more day. Keep pretending it’s all okay. JusT ONE MORE DAY.
If the train system hasn’t completely crashed, I’m sure the rails are all warped to shit. But seems like it’s impossible to leave otherwise.
The way this game is presented is great. Chilling and sad but barely holding together a facade of normalcy. My favorite part of these kinds of stories is seeing how the character’s fantasy world starts falling apart. That disturbing cusp between “normal” and “burning” is so chilling, like Dolores’ crazed ranting and the husband’s notebook.
Here's my theory about the endings
In "burn together" Anatoli choose to die with Pyotr, his lover, which may or may not have successfully escaped through a secret path in the playground at night ( which he found while taking a walk ) which is why you play as Pyotr in the end
Meanwhile, if Anatoli sacrifice himself, Pyotr would had died waiting for him, Dolores would had somehow managed to survive, possibly using an underground path, like the sewers or in the playground and waited until the sun finally slept...

there's also another kind of ending he didn't go over which is to step off the station and walk into the desert, which I know ends up burning anatoli alive but I think it's possible to avoid that

Meanwhile, everyone just keeps going along with their routine for whatever reason; may it be contentment, desperation, willful ignorance, or what have you. Someone is made to take the fall in an attempt to keep it going. That someone is you. But the end is inevitable, and the company is dying either way.

GREAT voice-acting Manly! I adored this game! It's so oppressive, but the chipper music and genially smiling sprites give the feeling that we're desperately pretending everything's fine! I loved Anatoli's thoughts about someday taking Pyotr away from all this and being free, that was beautiful.

First time I’ve heard mario 3 described as a horror game
There’s also the cool theme of community. Communities made of individuals who struggle to remain individuals within a community. The Mayor says explicitly that he doesn’t take responsibility and is making sacrifices but we don’t see much evidence of that. So a community (or government specifically since it’s the Mayor) is shifting responsibility for the community’s pain on the individuals in the community. Whew.
Everyone just losing their mind because of the heat
Pretty rare to see an older gay protag.
So, primarily from the outfit of the main character and the giant speaker in the middle of the city I've got a slight vibe of military situation. It miiight be a stretch, but well, here it goes...
You COULD interpret the sun being the outer threat (i.e. a country you are in fight with), so it would make a LOT of sense:
1. People being burned out by the sun all of a sudden are actually being sent to the frontline.
2. TV reports are also from the frontline, showing that the situation is only getting worse.
3. Main character works on train station - supporting troops from the back and therefore being left alone the last.
4. Government is represented as a pure evil is keeping itself in a good position, i.e. with tobacco, hiding in a basement/bunker, caring only for themselves, whilst the country is losing.
5. Giant speaker speaks propaganda - that you owe to the country and should sacrifice yourself.
6. Also speaker being gallows - showing similarity between being executed and being brainwashed to die for someone.
7. Lady saying that this is not the first time - i.e. she've seen war before.
8. Ticket in the inventory is to the frontline.
9. Husband understood that he got to go, and so he was secretly preparing and then left during midnight whilst main character was sleeping (Did not wanted to disturb and bring suffering upon him).
10. Finally - an option of burning all together (giving up on your country), or either sacrificing yourself to get a bit of time.
It might be that main character have gotten himself a trauma for sending people to the war, and therefore stuck alone with the memories of people he was around with.
Maybe it is just my imagination going wild, but for me it feels like it could fit the story.
I felt the same way! It’s a fantastic story with many different interpretations, but I think that’s a very likely one. -
I feel like that wasn’t what was intended, but damn it fits so well… Makes sense that sacrificing yourself keeps the sun at bay, as more bodies to fight the invading army keeps it at bay…
A town terrorized by greedy politicians and a wrathful Sun god that burn everything if a sacrifice is not made, that’s actually a really interesting concept!

Is this game maybe an allegory for global warming and maybe the working class vs wealthy elites ways of surviving the consequences? The man underground is safe and had a way to stop it but refused because he'd still be comfortable and he asks for a sacrifice but refuses to be it

Seems like a a metaphor for global warming to me, with all the feeling of impending doom and what not.
The stuff with the mayor saying that he had the means to stop it, but used the paper to roll his cigarettes might be representative of how the threat of Global Warming was sidelined by the government for a long time despite it being known of earlier and has now progressed to a state that is much harder to fix
Not only that but the stuff about how the mayor claims that he sacrificed by not having anything to roll his cigarettes, and then asks people to sacrifice by literally killing themselves is clearly a way to present the idea of how the government, or large companies, or just insanely rich people shift the blame and responsibility to individuals who can effectively do nothing compared to what the government/Companies/whoever the fuck could do with an amount of money that could last them well over a thousand life times
So I guess if that’s how it’s meant to be interpreted than that makes the moral:
Don’t let the rich and powerful force the small and poor to deal with problems that the rich and powerful made in the first place or else were all gonna die
or to put it in shorter terms: Eat the rich :)
