  • People still put red dye in their hummingbird nectar. With this video I hope to explain why red dye is bad for the birds. It is not necessary for the food to be red in order to attract hummingbirds to your feeders.
❓Where can I buy the exact same feeders, swings or ant moats?

My brother and his wife have three hummingbird feeders and have never used red dye .they are in Thousand Oaks. I have a feeder now for the last 4 months and have never used red dye.
I am just about 4 miles from you in North Hollywood and I appreciate what you do for these beautiful creatures. I am also a bird owner. I have two parakeets and a cockatiel and I am a senior citizen.

Thank you for this PSA, Dr. Carol. I don’t think that I‘be ever used red nectar. I think that other people might not understand that nectar can be easily made at home and consequently buy the commercial stuff.
I can’t believe how many birds you’ve had at your feeder lately !
Take good care and stay healthy.💚❤️🦜😊👍

    Thank-you for making this video!!👍🏻
Instinctively, I have always had an aversion to the concept of putting red dye in hummingbird feeders. It just always seemed so wrong. My mother-in-law did it and then bragged about how the birds came. How do you tell your MIL that as far as you’re concerned she’s making a big mistake. Ideally if I could feed the birds who come to my home strictly on flowers, I would even eliminate the sugar water. But, sadly, blooms don’t start until long after they arrive here in our zone 5. Keeping feeders is the only way, I can keep them around until the flowers bloom. I’ve identified 14May as the date I must have my feeders ready. All of a sudden they appear at my patio door, and, if I’m not ready with a fresh feeder, I hear about it!!!!!
Don’t poison our wonderful hummers with the red dyes!!!

Plants, you could try sharing this video with her, and share Hummingbird Spot with her as well. If she has a view at the live feeder camera with all those bustling birds at clear feeders, and learns why red dye could be harmful, maybe she'll have a second thought if she really loves those little birds. :)

Most feeders sold today have plenty of red parts to draw their attention and clear nectar works perfectly! My small "four-seater" flying saucer has a transparent red lid and they love it. It's been open for business for nearly a dozen years. No dye is ever used.
When I've seen red dye used it is often inside feeders made from clear glass bottles, and the dye provides the main "eye appeal". For these clear glass feeders, why not attach some red trim instead? Little pieces of reflective red tape on the bottle, or some such, would grab their notice.
As for the dye product, I shudder to think of where it comes from. No thanks!

Interesting, Carole. I always wondered about the red dye, never really knew the hummers were attracted to the color. Anyway, I prefer clean, crystal clear nectar just like you have! I look forward to your next video. Thank you

Indeed people need to educate themselves, RED attracts hummers but most feeders have enough RED color, so use sugar & water Only! I do have hanging planters close with RED blooming plants that attract them too.

My neighbor recently placed out several feeders, all with red food coloring in them. I told her that, it's not good for the birds and even showed her an article about it, but she doesn't see anything wrong with it. She thinks because she makes her own nectar, that there is nothing wrong with adding food coloring to it. She has been doing this for years and that is the excuse she uses.

That was great. What type of food is that Carmine stuff put in? Is there a way to find out? Love the suggestion of putting red things out by your feeders. I am going to get some red fake flowers and put them by the feeders. If they attract the bears, who will wake soon, I will take them down. Excellent video. I will put it on my TH-cam channel with your other videos.

Oh, wow! Sorry to tell you it was custom. I picked out the material myself from swatches! I have another identical one in storage because they both were facing each other in a huge room. We downsized to a townhouse and can fit only one. If you're local you are in luck!

Personally, I would take it back to the store and tell my parents how much you appreciated it, but just like the grocery stores sell a lot of food that is really bad for us as humans, the store sells some stuff that is bad for the hummingbirds.
