Mercedes-Benz X-Class pickup truck (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • Mercedes-Benz X-Class is pickup truck. Nothing strange about it, because Mercedes does offer vans and trucks. There’s also nothing extraordinary in the fact the X-Class was made in cooperation with Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Sharing components or even entire cars across different brands is nothing new. However whereas Nissan Navara is just a workhorse, I expect more from Mercedes-Benz. Does the X-Class have the X factor?

    Mercedes dropped the ball, they should have made a true luxury pick-up, like one based on the g wagon, something unique to the brand, and not this me too thing.

    The sliding window is to have access to stuff inside the rear canopy. About 20 years ago cars in South Africa and Australia had hard canopies as accessories that would be open to the cabin.

    I own a wood flooring company 95% of my product gets sent by a pallet freight company. This truck works for me seeing customers and also offer the option to deliver product quickly if it can't wait to go on a pallet. Also, we sell wood flooring trims and the sliding back window means I can slide them into the cab with about 30cm poking out. However, I only got it because of the good leasing deals offered in the UK.

      I can imagine the financing offer was aggressive at the end of the run for this model.

  • @hedydd2
    @hedydd2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Top marks for noticing that the X-class has disc brakes on the back and that its claimed extra width for pallets is compromised by the plastic load liner. No other review I've seen has mentioned either point. Not that I think there's any advantage in having discs on the back of a pickup to rust up.
    Side steps are great in this kind of pickup as the main function is to stop mud and cowshit being plastered up the sides of the truck. Very effective at this but pretty useless as steps.
    I agree with you that the practicality of pickups, is a lack of practicality for most people. For me, as a workhorse, I could not live without one. I want to carry big tote bags, half to one ton each, 1.25 metre big bales of straw, hay or silage, bags of sawdust bedding, dogs, tools inside with the rear seats raised, load straps and so on. A ladder rack behind the rear window is essential, as are a good number of tie-down anchor points in the bed.
    3.5 ton towing capacity is absolutely essential and used to the limit. Only wish it could legally carry a ton in the bed while doing so. Just today I quickly hitched up my 4 metre by 2 metre triple axle trailer up and towed 2.5 tons plus 10 by 25kg bags of sawdust and 8 25kg bags of animal feed in the loadbed. Then after unloading the cow the trailer was used to transport calves from one shed to another.
    It is a tool for a job which can also carry people in reasonable comfort. Its too long for most town parking bays and uses quite a lot of diesel fuel per mile. Suspension is hard to enable one ton payload, which isn't just a practical load but a business necessity and compulsory to qualify eligible businesses to claim back the VAT and get general tax relief on it. Anyone who buys one and who doesn't qualify for both VAT and tax relief needs their heads examined in my opinion.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the real-life user insight. But would you spend extra money to get the X-Class over the Navara/Ranger/Amarok/L200/Hilux?

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Possibly. Only in a year that threatened to take me into a higher tax rate though. In the UK that would be a 40% income tax band, so the difference in price between the others and the Mercedes would be reduced [not eliminated] by 40% due to the 100% offset as a business expense. This differs between countries, obviously.
      Otherwise any of the others make far more sense. A pickup makes zero sense unless there is an actual need for a work truck.
      As you have rightly observed, it isn't practical as domestic transport or for leisure. Think of four people going on a shopping trip. Even with a sliding cover or a canopy, the shopping is neither secure nor protected from water. Also you have to climb inside the bed to reach the front, although a long pole with a hook might suffice for light stuff. Groceries will probably need to be put in boxes in the back or they will be scattered all over the place.
      On the other hand it is great for carrying bricks, bags of cement [as long as it isn't wet] 1000 litre IBC's [Intermediate bulk liquid containers] and any other stuff that can be strapped down securely.
      If the VAT cannot be reclaimed and no use made of tax relief, then the advantage goes towards a good SUV with a small trailer for occasional use if needed, without a doubt.

      We had a couple of years in Poland, where pickup trucks became the "Chelsea tractor" of choice for tax reasons. Many people here are sole proprietors (which is a dick move by their real employers), so 70% of new car sales are fleet or business, even if the fleet is just a family car. Anyway, at some point it was possible to claim full VAT refund if the car had a sufficiently big and clearly separated cargo area, and mainly pickup trucks met this condition for a while. As soon as that regulation changed, market was flooded with second hand pickups that nobody wanted.
      Farmers in Poland seem to have tractors with trailers for short runs, and small lorries for long runs. I'll have to talk to my aunt, who used to have a farm, and ask her why pickups never caught on, where they could be useful.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Small-larger conventional haulage and delivery trucks are generally useless off tarmac or concrete and in the UK anything bigger than a pickup generally needs to exceed 7.5 gross tons to carry anything like a practical load, and hence an operator's license, tachograph, all kinds of regular official checks and so on. Therefore they are avoided by most farmers and businesses if possible.
      I cannot think of any local farms that have no pickup or Land Rover to be honest. Many other traders also have them. My cowman has his own [only a Caddy though] and his son has a personal Isuzu bought used [he can't claim the VAT back] and he works for a tree surgeon company which has about a dozen. Western Power, the local electricity distribution engineers have a fleet of many tens of pickups which are replacing the discontinued LR 110 Defenders slowly, as these die.
      Even local trailer parks [holiday caravan parks] have pickups for general maintenance and fetching and carrying duties.
      I would say that at this time of year and outside of the rush hour, every fifth vehicle on the roads is a pickup and every third one has a trailer behind. Nearer towns and on motorways that isn't the case of course.
      Used pickups don't hold their value well here. Almost all are sold +VAT for a start, because the first owner has to pay VAT to the government on the sale price because he claimed it back initially. Most will have been used for business and some will have had a hard time. Only the premium specification, low mileage and immaculate four door ones find a ready used market.

    That sliding rear window has served me well! In the US, most truck owners tend to own detached homes. Most of us want to maximize the utility of these vehicles to handle towing, hauling, off-road activities and work! These pass-thru windows come in handy when attempting to transport 2x4s, 2x6s, 2x8s, etc.... That are too long (10'&12'ft) for most short bed trucks! I won't even look at a truck if it lacks this feature!

    • @MybeautifulandamazingPrincess
      @MybeautifulandamazingPrincess 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely. I'm surprised to see this features was added, in an age pretty much all other manufacturers removed that feature, and the much useful rear window that opens separately from the rear door. It always pissed me off manufacturers removed those. Both those features I really enjoy in pickups and SUVs

    Just noticed that the test truck has no mudflaps. These are essential on pickups, they really are. They are also standard fit on many other pickups, such as the Ford Ranger and the whole Nissan Navara range. So Mercedes charge about 30% more than Nissan for the badge and dashboard, yet have the cheek to charge extra again for flaps, the load liner and the fourth and fifth year warranty, again standard on Navara. Let me think about that for a minute……………. Hmm! Not impressed!
    The interior storage, as you mention, is essential for this class of vehicle. I need a place for my phone, animal medicines and vaccines, syringes and needles for the same, paper records for the above and breeding records, head torches and wiping clothes and gloves for dirty hands. Here there is surprisingly little thought or provision for storage that I expect and get with my Ford Ranger.
    Did you have a look at the chassis and running gear? Did you notice the trailing arms on the rear axle? Made out of paper thin pressed steel. The chassis rails themselves? Typically Nissan and peppered with big holes around the rear wheel arch area especially in order to let dirt and salty moisture inside the box sections in order to rust them out for a finite and relatively short life. You don't get that with a HiLux, believe me.
    As you probably know, the previous model Navara is notorious for chassis that break in half just behind the double-cab. They rust terribly and the chassis is not particularly rigid, the combination of which causes total failures at between six and ten years of age. Nissan have been buying failed ones back with quite a generous allowance plus 20% off new ones in the UK, fair play to them. I doubt whether Mercedes would be so fair, but that is just my suspicion having dealt with them previously.

      Mike Cady -- are you serious? The sliding rear window can be utilized to carry 2x6s, 2x4s, or 2x8s that are too long for your short bed truck. People tend to forget that most trucks sold in the US are not meant too be tall cars. I would NEVER, EVER purchase a truck WITHOUT sliding rear windows. I have no brand loyalty (i have owned a Tundra, F150, Titan, and Silverado) but it damn well better allow maximum utility. Hence, sliding rear windows!!

    These cars are not for the European market… they for us here in South Africa where we have sunny blue sky 360 days a year… these cars are also popular in Australia and the rest of Asia & south America.
    I’m not a big fan of the Mercedes… a little to pretentious. But we manufacture the Navara here.
    We also manufacture the hilux and the ranger.
    So yes, European weather makes a pickup very unhappy. Only cool sunny blue skies for us please :)

      Its just a slightly different style and more expensive Navara. There's nothing that this does that the Navara will not do just as well.
      A big let-down for me is the retention of the prehistoric part time 4wd transfer box which cannot and must not be used in 4wd on paved roads or grippy surfaces. Compound that with electric engagement of 4wd and range changes, which are done with electric motors and, in the latter case, when at a dead stop, and the 'luxury' description is beyond laughable. Its just an 'added value' pickup truck. No added value for the customer but the invoice has added value for Mercedes and Mercedes truck [not car] dealers.

    Significant error of judgement by Daimler executive team. Big pickups are the US makers domain and small are best done by the Japanese. A German-French-dual Japanese effort like the X-Klasse should be avoided for some time (at least until next upgrade).

      Chassis failures (Nissan Spain), engine complexity twin spool twin turbo to avoid emissions problems for performance won't last long in the commercial environment where reliability and maintenance costs/depreciation are the overwhelming decision factors rather than a 3 point star. For the private user who thinks it's a status symbol or brain dead thinking it's a pure MB product aligned tot he quality from the 90s and earlier they won't know the difference. It's a Euro scentric model that MB problem hinks it can sell anywhere due to it's reputation

    This truck must seen very pointless in Europe,but take a look at the markets Mercedes selected at launch and then it makes sense. This truck would be a perfect luxury vehicle and top of the range in South America, Africa and Australia, pickup trucks like this one are used for everything: police cars, work vehicles, camper trucks, towing rig and of course, luxury sedans. Their versatility is why these places are filled to the brim with Toyota Hiluesx, VW Amaroks, Ford Rangers, Nissan Navaras and Mitsubishi L200s.

      It is not meant for you, so relax. It is meant for businesspeople who have a lot of tax to pay so that the difference in price between this and a similar spec Navara [about 30%] is reduced by tax relief. Of course these potential customers should really have a need for a pickup, otherwise they would be better off buying a proper car or SUV.

      Sorry, you need to grow up just a little more before you can talk to the big boys.... This engine is just a newer version of an engine Nissan makes decades before the Renault joint venture.... like I said Reanult never, until recently, made vehicles that used engines of this size, unlike Nissan who makes serious offroaders since forever.... so no, It's not a Renault engine, it's a NIssan engine that's been used in Renault vehicles...

      Let's not be obtuse here... NIssan makes an 2.3L inline 4 Diesel since the 1980's,
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Nissan_engines
      Renault never had this type of engine. The new models are based on the old units , of course modernised. Car makers develop brand new engines (that have no relations to older units), once every 2 or 3 decades or even more. So the 2.3L diesel is a Nissan engine, developed and manufactured by NIssan, and used in certain Renault models. Renault makes smaller engines up to 2.0L and NIssan makes the bigger ones, from 2.0L upwards, also big V8's etc etc. since Renault simply doesn't have the know how...In my humble opinion Renault is destroying NIssan, making cars with "French" quality...

    • @TukaSlave

      There are many parts in the "Nissan" engine that have the Renault symbol stamped into them. Kind of hard to imagine if it was a Nissan engine. Oh and keep your distance, I hear stupid can be catching.

      +Martin Buck so because parts have a Renault logo on them, it makes it a Renault engine? Did you even read my comments?! Did you do some research yourself?! So sad for you, being a moron and all...

    Everybody is looking for something to redeem this car ... so let me say it, its a very bad attempt at a pick up simple as that

    THIS IS NOTHING MORE THAN A FANCY, OVER-PRICED DATSUN!!! Any person willing to pay this idiotic price for a Renault / Nissan with a Mercedes badge is a nut case!!!

    This is a pretty ugly truck as far as exterior. The interior is great but for a pickup pretty damn unnecessary and lack practicality.
    This is a strange looking truck overall.
