Great video! I do have 1 car related suggestion- don't top off your gas tank after the pump shuts off automatically. The owners manual says it under the refueling section (pg 279-280) and The Car Care Nut has a great video explanation as to why, titled "Never Top Off Your Tank".
I’ve watched it and I disagree with it. The charcoal cartridge is completely fine especially if I immediately drive it and burn fuel. The one click added 1/8th gallon (slightly less). I have topped it off before going to Denver and it took an extra 1.1 gallons. That’s what you shouldn’t do lol.
I agree. What's the point of topping it off on a car that gets you such high mpg anyway. It's not like the '69 Mustang I had as a teenager where every mile counted a lot more. 😂
I think its true toping up a gas tank can damage some components but I really don't think double clicking is considered top of in my opinion I used to top of my cars all the way till I see the gas almost flowing over and I had to lern the hard way when my engine light came on because of the avaparator charcoal system malfunction
Awesome! Got the video a day early! I thought I’d be waiting till tomorrow. That mpg is absolutely incredible. I’m sure it will improve in better conditions and warmer temperatures. I hear most EV’s lose power and/or range in colder temperatures and you’ll absolutely get that 100+ mpg. Your loop actually almost exactly represents a week of commuting to and from work for me, so that’s super helpful. I like your technique of using ev mode uphill, hybrid mode on highway and charge mode when the battery is low. Definitely a strategy I will employ and test when my new Prius arrives. Yet again, another awesome video. Keep it up!
Thank you. I decided to drop it a day early. And yeah I bet with everything done to the car I’m going to do and better weather I can hit 100 mpg. I really appreciate your comments. If there is anything else you want to see just let me know.
I love this, I had to laugh a little because I'm sure everyone behind you was saying "F"-Man get out of my way you F'n Prius Driver....lol...Love it!! I drive a Hybrid and always drive it around 75 MPH on the HWY, but that's my loss. In town, I do play the battery at lower speeds game...If i stay under 35 I can cruise on battery till is nears empy then the motor forces back on...
Quick question. How much does it cost to charge the battery because you should include it in the cost calculation. Awesome video. Thanks for taking the time and effort 👍
Would you be able to test the 23 Prius Prime on snow piles? This would be my last concern before getting one ordered. Cheers! Thanks. You earned my subscribe.
I will definitely see what I can do. We don’t have much snow right now but the moment we get enough snow I’ll let you know. And thank you for subscribing. Means a lot to us. We are trying to grow and we do appreciate it
Thanks for conducting these interesting experiments. If we assume the initial battery energy contributed around 50 miles of range the remaining 200 miles on 2.65 gallons produced 76 mpg (the superfluous calculation precision is pointless). I would guess that using charge mode at all might actually detract from overall efficiency since charging has additional efficiency loss and hybrid mode is already optimizing engine loading vs charging, it would be interesting to see a comparison with a test that used only EV and Hybrid modes and skipped Charge mode.
40 p.s.i club👍 does the prime charge the battery when driving? Like every gen prius? Regular driving is charging the battery ? When you say "charge mode" are you talking about (B on shifter?) Love the video, your speed is 100% In the sweet spot my 08 camry hybrid has 310,685miles (500,000km) next month.😮
Thanks, in charge mode the engine charges the battery and there is no electricity coming from the battery. The B mode you are talking about is also available and I use that when going down hill.
I actually use the ev when i go slow and downill when i go uphill i use gas I find gas is more efficient on high accerlertion, uphill or faster speeds Thats just my experience i could be wrong And i almost never use the charge Funktion if i want to be efficient
On my Camry which I believe the steering wheel setup is very similiar you can I believe hold the cruise control button and it will go into the oldschool cruise instead of radar cruise. It should pop up with some warning and you can switch it back or when you turn it off and on I think it goes back. Hopefully it works considering you most likely see a lot of snow.
What are you…. Or would you use for winter tires? Are winter tires even available for the XSE prime? I’ve got a 2024 prius prime on order. I’m way up in the Yukon, Canada. I’m curious how it will preforms in our climate and terrain conditions. ☺️
I’m on stock tires. I’m not 100% sure but they are all season tires. So far, here in Colorado it has done good. We don’t have winters like you guys but we do get some snow. So far no issues.
The thing is, charging at home electricity isn’t free. Where I live, it’s actually more expensive to charge than to just drive hv using only gas. if gas is over $4 per gallon, then it’s actually cheaper to charge the car and use ev mode. If gas is under $4 as it has been these last few months, then I don’t even charge my car overnight at home anymore. It’s more expensive than just using gas!
Yeah there is definitely a point where one is worth it over the other. I tell everyone that if you can charge for free then it’s amazing (my friend works at a place with free charging). Personally I have solar on my house which I sell back 1-2 MWh a month. So I plug in every day. But I totally get your point and agree
In my 2017 Prius ( not prime ) I use gas up hill as it also charges the battery. I coast as much as possible down hill. Best days are 16 - 19 Celsius. I have gotten 100 mpg once. 25 km to work. Thanks for the video. I get my 2024 Prius Prime Premium next weekend. It just arrived yesterday at the dealership. Did you have heat on. That would also lower your fuel mpg.
You can definitely do that. It depends on the state of the battery if you're high on percentage it's more beneficial to boost down the hill ev up. These car's are very hard to drive perfectly
@@sacredhealstv901 I agree they are difficult to perfect. But once you get it down it’s easy. With our last Prime, I drove it over 30k and I had it nailed down. Depending on how long the trip was, I would hypermile it or not. I did a trip to Florida and I did not hyper mile, but still got amazing mpg.
@@grabagearcolorado Probably on the Prius but on the non prius Hybrid's it's a pain. Don't you guy's have a lot more control of stuff with buttons and options than us non Prius peasants?
But don’t you ‘burn’ just as much electricity going up hill? Meaning I thought the car was equally efficient regardless of the fuel source. I could see using EV up the hill so that you have room to regenerate on the way down. Or using gas on the highway to save EV range if there’s going to be multiple, short trips later. I also don’t see how using charge mode helps with efficiency. There’s always going to be a conversion loss.
Your right. It all depends on how you use the car. For me I use hybrid going to Denver and ev to climb. Then from the top I use ev going down to regen. I’ll use most or all of my ev climbing, regen about 20 miles going down to Denver for in town driving. I’ve done the trip dozens of times in straight hybrid mode or how I do it. I get 6 mpg better my way on average. Thanks for watching
On my trip to Vegas which is roughly 8 hours of interstate driving we achieved 50 mpg. There was always some battery left but for the most part it was all hybrid. On the way back which is up in elevation we achieved 45 mpg
at start he had a full tank and full battery, at the end he had a full tank and an empty battery. 2023 battery capacity is about 44 miles range. so per his 97.23mpg he is actually getting about 53mpg, which is inline with what all primes get on average. so he did not create more energy, on average it's about same if he just did nothing and kept driving on ECO mode only. the only difference is having the EV when needed, the price difference of gas over electricity, and how aggressive one drives.
I agree and disagree with your assessment. After doing thousands of miles of driving I can tell you that if you tell the car what to do instead of letting the computer do it, you will get better mpg. Ive now done a dozen plus trips with the car and Ive done the same road over and over (Grand Junction to Denver). With the computer doing its own thing I don’t get nearly as good of mpg. Your calculations are also wrong. Your calculations are 97.23 - 44 for the 53. Sure if I did 137 miles. But I did 250. Therefore we can get rid of the 44 from 250, which will give us 80 mpg. I would really like to see your videos showing the results from your Prius prime test.
The thing I was like about the Prius, every generation is the Geekiness of it. A good Geekiness . All the reviews of the new one talk about the same thing. Oh it looks so good. Oh it’s so much quicker. Who cares it’s still a Prius I want to geek out on it. I don’t buy a Prius to try to pretend I’m in a Celica.
We know you're not a scientist so you should let the vehicle transition between charging, ev, and hybrid modes. You defeat the purpose of climbing in ev mode by switching to charge mode. I would suggest doing the opposite of what you do, use petrol uphill, EV down, and don't use chargemode. Or... just leave it in hybrid and let the car sort it out.. In addition, EV going up burns through your battery quicker. This I believe would leave the ICE on for longer time to "catch up".. Goal should be to have the ICE on for as short total time as possible, and have it work fairly hard when it's on.
