    This video was so helpful! Thank you. I live in The Bahamas and recently got poisoned by Hog Snapper. I’m on day 4 and feel so limited! I’m going to try the detox methods you suggested and cut out the foods you recommended. I’ve been taking B12 & B6 everyday and will continue to take them until I beat this thing!

    Thank you Amy!! Your video gives me hope. I just received ciguatera last week and have been scared when I read online the long term effects. I am 27, very active lifestyle, healthy diet, and have been amazed at how hard this has taken me back.
    On that note, I was wondering.... what symptoms did you have the first 48 hours? I am curious if the extremeness of ours is similar.... As well as at what point did you start your regular diet you had prior to the ciguatera and how did you feel?
    Thank you for your time!

    • @amyconnell
      @amyconnell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My pleasure Alex. I'm sorry you have it and I'm here to give you hope that it does get better.
      My symptoms the first 48 hours were extreme vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue. I didn't even have the energy to make it from the toilet to the bed and just laid down on the bathroom floor (plus the cool tile felt nice). I also had neuropathy in my feet and extreme itching in areas you don't want to scratch in public. I also had the condition where my hands burned when I washed them with cold water (I can't remember the name of it).
      Buckle up - it took a solid six weeks to feel back to normal. Give yourself grace and time.
      I followed the nutrition changes I mentioned for a solid six weeks as well (including abstaining from alcohol). Basically plant-based but keeping nuts out was really hard. Review labels on everything, and don't forget that plant-based milks like almond milk have, well, almonds. (Dairy jacks with my system so I couldn't do regular milk. Oat milk to the rescue!)
      On the advice of a physician who had long-term ciguatera whom I was lucky enough to get connected with, I refrained from all fish products for a year. It may be that I could have had it prior but I didn't want to risk causing a relapse.
      I wish you luck and patience. You'll get there but it will take time. Take it easy and drink lots of fluids.

    Thank you. Going to buy the supplements you mentioned. I ate a Cero Mackerel fresh caught that was a little over a pound roughly 2 weeks ago and it is still a nightmare. Definitely much better but still a nightmare. I have only been eating fresh Microgreens that I grow, organic turkey and bulletproof coffee with decaf mushroom coffee. Ultimately I am getting better but I will never look at a fish the same way again!

      Also - for what it's worth I did incorporate fish back into my diet after 10 months. No problem with it now but I will forever and always stay away from the big fish (snapper, which got me, mackerel, etc)

    Thank youuu i have been watching so many videos since got ciguatera it last saturday (i’m 90% sure it is that). And got so depressed reading the symptoms could last for years… i have been doing keto for more than one month so i think it will be easy to not ear fish chicken or pork… i will try probiotics and all the other things you suggest, also taking antiallergic pills every night and equinaccea

    Thanks for the information! This has been 2.5 weeks for me.. and I’m thinking the sugar and wheat I had yesterday (half donut and cous cous) really made my symptoms worse last night - some itching and painful neuropathy and pains “jumping” from place to place . Did you experience joint pains or pains that jump from place to place throughout the body?

    • @amyconnell
      @amyconnell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Phyllis, I'm glad this was helpful. It's such a frustrating process. I'm glad you're paying attention to how your body responds to different foods. We are all unique so it's different for everyone, but I definitely noticed a difference when I had gluten and sugar. Most of my neuropathy was in my feet but I don't think it's surprising that it's jumping around for you. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon!

    I feel like I won't be able to have fish or chicken anymore cause I have serious CNS nerve damage before I got ciguatera. I can't move around just like elders. Some says other meat or things also can flare the symptom but how do I know what other kinds of meat do that for 'me'? It's usually just chicken egg and sea food? Also, I got serious ciguatera 5 weeks ago and I really need it to be gone. The recovering period seems different for everyone but it seemed there is something in common aswell, it took 6 weeks ~ a year for most of them. My the most torturous symptom is better but I feel I'm having really bad condition compared before ciguatera. I wasn't able to move around freely but it's worse. I wonder if I most likely have better condition in several months. Lastly, they say any fish can flare up the full symptoms but is that mean it totally gives exactly same symtoms and recovery time with the first poisoning that is long? Or it just flare up the symptom for a while as there was no ciguatera in that fish at that time?
    I'm sorry that it was long but maybe it is possible to recognize what I'm worried about.

    I'm on day 9 after what seems to be ciguatera. I too am a nutrition geek. It was those efforts that got me through this to what I am experiencing now. I'm wondering how this was diagnosed for you. Are there tests to show if these toxins are still in my body. I was too sick to drive until day 6 when I went to ER , sadly, my entire story was ignored and dismissed. I was discharged with "slight diverticulitis" and antibiotics. To hear all the stories that ciguatera is a nightmare is so true. I've never felt so sick in my life. At this point, I'm still weak and exhausted and undernourished. For days my fingertips were pulsing strongly, now my fingers are still humming. There's this crazy tingling, tightening band around my head and forehead that moves around. Plus a pain that appears to travel around my head. I have only experienced the really strange feeling of the switching of hot and cold on three occasions. So frustrating. I don't know where to turn. So tired, I don't know what more I can do for myself and I don't know how to get a Dr to listen.

      So sorry to hear that!! Are you staying away from all sea food, nuts, mushrooms alcohol and caffeine? What helped me and what continues to help me is vitamin B12. And watching what you eat as some foods may make symptoms worse. I had done a food intolerance test months later.. so certain foods I avoid to avoid those awful symptoms of neuropathic pains. Initially I had taken paracetamol for the pains and Benadryl at night. Drink lots and lots of water. Eat single ingredient foods.. avoid foods with Carageenan in it

    What oil can a patient consume?

    • @amyconnell
      @amyconnell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To my knowledge I haven't seen any restrictions on oil, but I'd keep it plant-based: olive, avocado, etc. (Not canola, as the processing is a little suspect)

    Can a patient consume rice, wheat, corn, bean, mustard, sesame, palm oil, chestnut, coconut?

    • @amyconnell
      @amyconnell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't seen data saying you can't consume it, however keep in mind wheat can be inflammatory, which can exacerbate symptoms. I recommend talking with your doctor to determine the best approach for you.

    • @amyconnell
      @amyconnell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. No one refused to help. My primary care was booked so I went to urgent care, which sent me to the emergency room. Protocols for ciguatera are limited especially if it's been more than a few days (too late for Manitol). They didn't have any medical literature on what to do so I did the research myself. I did receive an IV with antihistamine but that didn't do anything except possibly rehydrate me a little.

    You should sue the restaurant

    • @SomeGuy-vo7we
      @SomeGuy-vo7we หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's not the restaurant's fault. There's no way to tell if a fish has ciguatera. That's just the risk you take eating warm-water reef fish like grouper, snapper, barracuda, etc.
