Joshua, this is my first quad I've built myself since the OLD days where my small quad was like 2' wide. Running 3s. With SPEKTRUM! I been banging my head on a table spending EVERY night till 2:00am trying to diagnose my issues! It's because of THIS VIDEO!!! That I was able to resolve my issues! YOU THA MAN!!!!!!
Why am I just now absorbing this information for the first time after 4 years of flying?! Thanks, JB! Trying to figure out why I'm not getting my ESC chimes.... Ugh.
Your video helps clear up confusion about this board. I did a Helio Spring/4-in-1 install two weeks ago. I assumed the VBAT pin on the 4-in-1 connector was for voltage monitoring only, and if you want to power the board with VBAT, you need to use the power pads on the board. It's good to know this isn't necessary. My setup (Helio Spring/Aikon AK32) runs off 5V and has VBAT monitoring. Having dueling regulators isn't a problem (for me),
YUP, I just learned something today! Thank you Joshua Bardwell. I will take care of you again in the next super chat!! New builder here and just ran into this issue! Why are these not standardized?!!!!!!
Great video. My comment is that while you do a great service to community by explaining how to connect things a.s.o, the manufacturers, in this case Heliospring, DALRC or whoever, need to make a decent documentation where they explain what is going on with 5V or NC and VBAT. You have great access to all these guys for obvious reasons and that's really great. The rest of us, in matters like these are at the mercy of you available time. Please point this out to them to create documentation. Thanks
Almost exactly what I was looking for! I purchased the same DALRC but I want it to be connected the the kakute F4 v2. The kakute F4 v2 diagram says : 1 Battery voltage 2 R5 (for ESC telemetry) 3 Ground 4 Current sensor input 5-8 Motors So I guess that the pin 1 will be VCC and the "current" from the DALRC goes on the pin 4 ? What about the pin 2 R5 (for ESC telemetry) ? Thank you in advance if you want to answer me :) This is my first build ever and I am quite nervous :)

Wow you totally wrecked that connector, lol! I have moved wires around in those connectors a few times and it really sucks when you get to the last one you need to do and start carefully lifting the tab only to have it break off unexpectedly. That is the exact reason I have two of the wiring kits already in my collection. Those things are immensely useful. Another great video Joshua.
I have this same build and been flying for about 2 months. Repinning the wires wasn't too bad. I purchased the wiring kit from Race Day Quads and it was perfect. I still get a lot of noise in my video even with a 1000uf capacitor. So far I haven't found a solution but its still flyable. I'm using the Odin firmware and I couldn't be happier with how it flies! It was kind of a pain in the ass to round up all the info for this FC & ESC combo and butterflight settings but I am sure this will help others!
Thanks for this video JB. Super helpful! I purchased the iFlight SucceX-D F7 TwinG Flight Controller. The ESC pinout for it shows, GND, VBAT, M1, M2, M3, M4, CUR, and R5. The emax buzz esc shows S1, S2, S3, S4, Tx, VCC, and GND. The S1-S4, connections go together with the M1-M4 and GND and GND go together correct? Tx from your esc goes to the CUR on the F7 board I think..VCC goes to the VBAT? What do I do with the leftover R5 connection? Thank you so much!!

I have a tmotor f55 and a kakute f7 (not aio). The f55 has both, tlm and current. Is it possible to connect the current of the esc with the tlm port of the fc or is this the best way to burn both?
Hey, JB. Same setup I use and I soldered the Current and 5v bridges. I am using 5v in from DalRC as well as VBAT in, but not the bridge up top of the board and everything works fine....using VBAT for OSD.
My HGLRC fc is wired to my iflight esc. Motors match 1-1 2-2 3-3 4-4. I get the flip on takeoff. I'm guessing that HGLRC fc (motor 1) is not the same as iflight (motor 1). Hey Josh! Can you try wiring an frsky receiver to the sbus port and reciever power and let me know if the board won't boot. I had to run mine off the 5v rather then the provided receiver power or the board wouldn't boot. If I plugged in USB with the receiver connected to receiver power it would fry the board. I went through 3 boards before I tried one thing at a time and isolated it to the receiver. Weird...
Fried my FC accidentally wiring the vbat wire from the ESC to a signal pin to the FC. It burned the F4 chip on the FC and the ESC visually didnt take any damage but it doesnt boot anymore. Can the esc still be fixed perhaps by identifying the component that broke? Mosfets are still good
Hi josh, I’m relatively new to the hobby, I ripped off my buzzer soldering pads on my dys f4 flight controller and I was wondering if there are different options to wire a buzzer to it or can I repair the soldering pads?
Hey Joshua! Great vid. Im building my first quad and ran into a small issue. Im using a iFlight Succex-D mini ESC and the Mini magnum 3 F4 flight controller. I wired everything up and it doesnt seem like the FC isnt powering on, however the LED on the xm+, connected to the FC, is turnibg on but faitly. The wiring from ESC to FC all match up to diagrams. The ESC has a VBAT and the FC has VCC, which are wired to each other. Can this be the issue? Thanks!
Joshua, I have purchased this ESC for an arming issue I have been having. It is all installed but when I go into Blheli and connect every esc reads "Erased or unknown firmware" If i select flash Blheli it reads the same message but with a lower case "u" underneath. Any suggestions. Btw the copter arms and spins motors with radio. Dan
Joshua, at 2:45 you implied that boards that take 5v input, like the Helio Spring, do so because they don’t have their own 5v regulator. This isn’t the case - the Spring has its own 2A regulator. I think it’s an option for users who don’t want to supply vbat for whatever reason.
Ummm I don't think I said that. If I said that it's a mistake. The Helio definitely has its own 5v regulator and in the making of this video, I had a conversation with Helio about how it interacts with the 5v on the ESC, so I know I was also aware of that when making the video.
help...................... i recently changed my escs to REV35 it has same pin diagram i have only connected signals wires with F3 but its not working Is it must to give 5V on 5v pin and gnd as well?

What does the N/C on mamba f405 mk2 4in1 esc mean? Im trying to wire it to the synergy f4 which has everythingtthe same plus a 5v. N/C on the esc and 5v on the FC. What would I need to do?

What current sensor settings are you using on the dalrc engine? Mine reads low. And I have a spedix gs35a 4 in 1 and it constantly reads 2.5 amps while unarmed on the bench. How do I fix that?
What happens when my plug gin too the flight controller is broke so I can't put 5v too power the fc idk what to do. Is there a way too put 5v too the fc without the plug
@@JoshuaBardwell i believe they gave me the wrong flight controller with the f445 stack. My flight controller would power up with usb and i could see my camera and vtx would power up. I dont have a xm plus receiver on yet but i wouldnt think that would not allow my flight controller too power up with battery connected? Once i unplug my usb the fc board lights would cut off but my vtx would still be on. I dont know what too do.
Hello, I have a question for you. I'm building my first quad and I choose Matek f405 std and racestar 4in1 esc 35 a. Question is: esc doesn't have 5v output and fc hasn't a bec. Can esc power fc from vbat?
Hey Joshua, im sure you already have this made, and comming soon. I was woundering if you could make a nice video on the final release of 3.4.0 and what the new features do, and filters. I feel like i was just getting it on 3.3.3 now everything with the filters have changed. Or maybe its just me. Hah I'm sure a few of us would really, really appreciate one of your informative videos on betaflight 3.4 final. I understand I can watch your rc 3.4.0 videos, to learn about the filters. Thanks always!
I guess "some" want a full 20m long video detailing the most important feature and how to tune them, specially iterm_relax, rc_smoothing, and pid filters :)
I've been thinking how to match FC's to 4 in 1 when they are different brands. Let's say current sensor is in the FC how should I wire it? Excellent video as usual

Hello again Joshua. Wow, what a string of bad luck I've been having. So I returned the 4-in-1 65a esc (below) and just bought 4 individual escs. Soldered everything back up to the Joshua Bardwell FC with a focus on making it look beautiful again, ha ha, and guess what -- the brand new escs plugged into to the new replacement JB FC from RDQ (the first one fried the two right escs requiring me to purchase new ones lol) are doing the same strange power cycling (the fc seems to remain booted) and the tones get out of sync. So clearly, the 4-in-1 was fine, and I made the 8-pin cable fine. Ugh, I have not flown a 5" in way too long now ha ha. You know I suppose it's possible that a microscopic piece of solder got in between something, but I even take precautions by putting a piece of tape over the board where I'm not soldering. I have gone years with zero issues. I doubt RDQ will send me another 'nother one. So I guess I should cut my losses, blah
if the ESC's are making the full five startup tones, then they are losing power. If they are making only the last 2 tones then the FC is losing power or the signal wire to the ESC is messed up.
@@JoshuaBardwell Two different sets of escs, same results (4 separately wired vs. using 4in1 plug) so it was the fc. RDQ gave me a credit on the board.
Hey JB Really enjoy your videos. I have a quick question on the UART port designation in butterflight for the FRSKY S- Port. If connected as shown in Helio layout, which UART is used? I assume UART 5 for smart audio but not clear on S- Port. Also assume camera control does not need designation.
Hey Josh I just want to say first and foremost great job with all the info... Question.. I have a NTXF4 fc with the vtx built in, I was flying the other day and had a bit of a crash, and I noticed the metal cover to the vtx came off, I tested everything and all works fine, now my question is, is it ok to fly without the cover, I know the vtx gets hot so I don't know if it's just a shield or is it a heat sink as well, I don't want to damage anything by flying without it, but I am jonesing to fly.
Sure would be nice if there was a 4in1 standard. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that my Tekko32 4in1 and the Helio had the exact same pinout. No mangled cable for me :)
Hey Joshua, i am currently installing this fc , along with your new signature 4in1, and would like to ask, do i need to bridge what? I didnt have any papers with the esc, no biggie, just curious if you might now offhand?
My best guess is you are using the white SBUS-IN cable and you need to be using the green SBUS-OUT cable. Otherwiese everything is exactly identical to the XM+.
Joshua, Are you still liking the Heliospring FC I am a Matek fan but i would like to try this board. Problem is since its huge release i haven't heard much and read a few bad reviews i do not put much stock in the reviews but there has not been a lot of long term user info. Congratulations on your JB F4 it is a nice looking board as well but, i would like to try the helio and not regret it LOL. I know your busy, I want to be a patron but i think my girl would take a tack hammer to my head LOL! Thank you for all you do!
Hi Joshua, this is Fred from Orlando, you helped me get a bad JB FC replaced by RDQ. Thank you - it is here. I am wondering if this sparks any memory of what might be the problem. I purchased a new 4-in-1 esc since the first board fried two of my 4 discreet ones. I picked up a 65amp HLGRC one. I followed this video and was super super duper careful that I made it match correctly. With the 6pin esc cable in, it powers the fc, it all looks fine, then the escs start to power cycle. Dah dah daaaah sound with maybe 2 seconds between each restart. I plugged it into the computer and looked at the escs with BLheli32 latest, and it says unknown protocol instead of blheli32. Perhaps I misunderstood one of the wires' purpose. I also very carefully followed the jb fc build video again on the new fc and triple checked everything. The solder bridges on the back are set for 5v and telemetry. If you happen to read this and feel so inclined to respond, thanks so much! I would be your Patreon partner but I am currently on a fixed income which limits me a lot. I'll throw you some bucks on a live chat though next time I'm there. So helpful.
@@JoshuaBardwell You're incredible at replying. Ok thank you. I will look up more about it, but I tried flashing them with blheli32, I honestly don't remember if it successfully flashed. I can't imagine this fancy, expensive 32bit esc came with S by default. But escs I have not delved deep into, but maybe there's a good reason to. Thanks again. I'll see if it lets me see it as blheli_s. After that, off to watch your new RR tuning video.
Well I went back in and it definitely has blheli32. It says so right above each "unknown input protocol". But now I am seeing a repeatable pattern of esc #2 on the board only booting successfully once in a while. Most of the time it's showing just --- for #2. I guess I'll run your new board with discrete escs. Thanks again, much appreciated, you always inspire me to dig deeper.
I can tell you what will happen, when you put in the helio spring cable: you fry your setup! :((( First you hear the esc booting with a little bit of noice... then every part will die instantly without smoking. After finding the problem and reordering the helio I recognized that only one esc boots after connecting it the right way - so new ESCs to reorder. The RX doesn't want to give any stickinputs to the fc... well... vtx transmits an image, but haven't check smart audio, yet... at the end: better than loosing the entire bird...

I had to run mine off the 5v rather then the provided receiver power or the board wouldn't boot. If I plugged in USB with the receiver connected to receiver power it would fry the board. I went through 3 boards before I tried one thing at a time and isolated it to the receiver. Weird...
I've wired up my FC as intended by the Philip Seidell diagram.
yeah I actually bridged Vbat and I think it caused a weird issue. You didn't mention that bridge at all and other people mentioned ignoring it.
Thanks!
Joshua,
I have purchased this ESC for an arming issue I have been having. It is all installed but when I go into Blheli and connect every esc reads "Erased or unknown firmware" If i select flash Blheli it reads the same message but with a lower case "u" underneath. Any suggestions. Btw the copter arms and spins motors with radio.
Dan
Are you using the correct version of blhelisuite? BLHelisuite32 for blheli32 ESCs and regular blhelisuite for blheli_S ESCs.
Joshua, that was it!!! Thank you!!!
Joshua Bardwell Sorry I edited my comment to clarify while you were replying.
This is my exact setup! It took me 20 minutes to realize the documents with the Dal Engine is upside down.
I used the helio spring fc with a raceflight bolt and I'm pretty sure those wiring pinouts are identical. plug and play for me and it worked
help......................
i recently changed my escs to REV35
it has same pin diagram i have only connected signals wires with F3
but its not working
Is it must to give 5V on 5v pin and gnd as well?
The FC needs power somehow. How it gets it is up to you. 5v input may be one way to do it.
Is it possible to connect the 4in1 each directly to my receiver?
I used your link for Readymade and ordered 3 kits..
Readymade has 18 wires in thier kits instead of 12...
Thank you much for this review! I've been looking for this for some time (a kit that make sense).. Ordered 3 kits...
What 4in1 ESC and FC would you go with for around $100 total for both?
Well he just recommended the Dal RC engine and he has a flight controller so I mean???
QUADBOT FPV depends a lot of track guys are unhappy with the mesh up aka f7, to many people are burning up motors esc...so buy for what you need. $100 emax 2 stack 20x20 35amp, small and has everything you need, just solder away. That's me though lol
Tekko 32 has the same pinout and connects fine.
This can be sold with simple math!

If you power the FC with V bat from a 4 in 1, will you get V bat at the other V bat and ground inputs? ( to power VTX)
Yes. But you have to bridge the solder jumpers to put vBat on the pads where there is a choice.
Joshua Bardwell Thank you
Awesome build and component choice, JB! Could you please make a second video about that combination? Like thoughts, pros and cons, flight video and so on? 😊
It's pretty good so far. Been flying it all weekend at Kwad Camp.
Joshua Bardwell Awesome! 😀
What does the N/C on mamba f405 mk2 4in1 esc mean? Im trying to wire it to the synergy f4 which has everythingtthe same plus a 5v. N/C on the esc and 5v on the FC. What would I need to do?
I should have watched the whole video before asking huh? Not used! So basically I don't even need to plug that one in. Thanks for the video! Bought a new FC using your links and ty for the advice on fb!
What current sensor settings are you using on the dalrc engine? Mine reads low. And I have a spedix gs35a 4 in 1 and it constantly reads 2.5 amps while unarmed on the bench. How do I fix that?
Jay Bird Did you ever figure this out? I’m having a similar problem with my setup which reads 10A unarmed
What happens when my plug gin too the flight controller is broke so I can't put 5v too power the fc idk what to do. Is there a way too put 5v too the fc without the plug
You can provide 5v into any 5v pad on the FC.
@@JoshuaBardwell Ijust dont know were too get 5v from the esc itself , there's no 5v pad that i can see
Same ESC and FC I use. No other way to go IMO, especially considering it's so easy to connect the two.
You use softmount for helio spring? Need It? They told me that the direct mount on the screws without any softmount is true?
I used soft mounts in this build because this build was having noise issues with another FC before Helio.
I see all the time on the helio slack that soft mounting beyond the gummies supplied causes more issues.
Hey, if you dont have the right plug, can you solder them directly to the pads?
Yes you can. But I suggest ordering an sh cable set and making the correct cable. Racedayquads sells the set.
Awesome, thank you for the quick response. They are out of stock, Ill see if I can find the set somewhere.
My JB F4 has a 8 pin Plug and my lumenier 4 in 1 esc has a 6 pin plug...what should i do now??
Get an sh cable set from racedayquads and make your own.
Hi JB could you please do a setup and explaination of the new filters in the pids section . Thanks.
Yes I discussed it in my Betaflight 3.4 preview video.
Hello, I have a question for you. I'm building my first quad and I choose Matek f405 std and racestar 4in1 esc 35 a. Question is: esc doesn't have 5v output and fc hasn't a bec. Can esc power fc from vbat?
The F405 std needs 5v input. It cannot be powered from vBat.
Thanks!
I learned how to do it when I learn something! Thank you sir!
I already have a preview video that discusses many of the new features. Can't link it easily as I'm on mobile but search my channel.
I guess "some" want a full 20m long video detailing the most important feature and how to tune them, specially iterm_relax, rc_smoothing, and pid filters :)
What means the NC by 5v or nc?
I've been thinking how to match FC's to 4 in 1 when they are different brands. Let's say current sensor is in the FC how should I wire it?
Excellent video as usual

Thank you soooo much for this video was trying to hook up an xrotor to a mamba dji stack and was getting FURIOUS.... quad kept going ape s***. Thanks to your video I figured out what I was doing wrong.
hi, i am trying to connect a fc xrotor with esc mamba. may i know how you solved it?
Awesome. Coincidently, I had just ordered the same FC and ESC!
I have this setup in a remix frame! For me the best at this moment. Flying on ODIN butterflight... This thing rocks! Burns RF1 for MILES! Dal Engine is Topnotch and the Hello... Hmmm do i need to say more ;-)
@wovenskin Me too.
Could you please make a video explaining how to connect 4in1 ESC to Matek F405-CTR flight controller? Thank you JB
www.mateksys.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/F405-CTR_BF.jpg
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you want to bridge RX4 at the end?
No telemetry from the ESC so no RX4 bridge needed
Correct.
I'm sorry I don't know this off the top of my head. I'm using Crossfire on my Helio build so I'm not using the SBUS or SmartPort pads.
OK Thanks reply. I have not found any documentation with these details. There's always good o'l trial and error.
@JoshuaBardwell how hard would it be to use you JB 4in1 with the Helio spring v2?
Same process you see in this video.
The cover is an RF shield. I would expect some issues to pop up if you flew without it. Like video noise or random failsafe.
Joshua Bardwell ...Ok, thanks, I did notice more noise in the video feed afterwards... Thanks for the feed back.
Why not use Dalrc Engine and Dalrc F405? just wondering before I grab something I don't need :P
Just want to give Helio a try.
Always exciting to see something new, great video :)
Success!! No smoke! How long until the consumer demands standardization??
Sure would be nice if there was a 4in1 standard. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that my Tekko32 4in1 and the Helio had the exact same pinout. No mangled cable for me :)
Which one is better BLHeli 32 or BLHeli S for ESCs?
BLheli_32 is better.
Hey Joshua, i am currently installing this fc , along with your new signature 4in1, and would like to ask, do i need to bridge what? I didnt have any papers with the esc, no biggie, just curious if you might now offhand?
On the underside of the FC bridge the center pad to the right pad for TLM.
@@JoshuaBardwell thank you! See ya in a month !
I just ordered the helio spring and dalrc engine yesterday! I've seen some people saying they have a lot of noise, how's it flying for you?
Great. No issue with noise at all.
You´re a monster!! I love your videos. Thank you from Spain
Joshua, use a needle/pin to lift the tabs. I do it all the time and rarely damage the tabs.
Nice review. Can you please make a review how to "FrSky R-XSR" with HelioRC? I can't bring mine to work and i switch to XM-Plus. Thx
My best guess is you are using the white SBUS-IN cable and you need to be using the green SBUS-OUT cable. Otherwiese everything is exactly identical to the XM+.
Thanks for the super simple breakdown of this process!! I know it answered a lot of my questions!! Keep it up bro!!
You need to check out the Hobbywing 45a 4in1, one of the best 6s 4in1's imo
If I understand correctly, VCC and VBAT is the same, right?
Yes.
I'm pretty sure the Dal RC f4 aio flight controller needs V bat and 5 volt just to work
I love how you ended this vid by leaving us with the start up tune.
The amount of knowledge I gained in THIS video! New builders follow this guy with BELLS! DONATE, We need this guy!!! Joshua Bardwell for the WIN!!!
I'm replacing the ESC on my Helio quad and haven't flown it in a while. But I liked it the last time I flew it.
@@JoshuaBardwell gonna replace mine as well...bad fet. what are you replacing it with?
So helpful.
Usually if you see "unknown protocol" in blheli that means that the ESC is blheli_s not blheli32.
I also chose these two boards together on my last build, there a really good match.
Right the video i was looking for :D. thanks
This is really helpful in my pyrodrone F7 stack!!!
Did that on mine. Simply the best combo !
Update.
The DALRC engine burnt on a ridiculous little crash.
It's the second one to burn like this.
I will don't buy this again...
why do you use kapton tape on your vtx
Because I don't have any clear heat shrink.
Great video, and reminder, Josh :)
Is the capacitor the one thats shipped with the ESC or a bigger one?
I wouldn't assume it's the one that's shipped with the ESC. I probably just pulled it from a drawer.
ok because i heared from guys with tons of problems using the shipped 470yf cap...
I used the cap that was supplied with no issues
Use a sewing needle to remove the pins from the plug.
Great video but since the helio spring is now on V2, be careful people, there is no more CURRENT pin on the plug but on a solder pad exclusively.
Thank you Mr. Bardwell. Today I learned something.
P.S. I love you
i always break those connector tabs... i really dont know how not to...
Nice video Josh.. I know that when I was starting to build this video would of really been useful 😊
Another great vid
I can tell you what will happen, when you put in the helio spring cable: you fry your setup! :((( First you hear the esc booting with a little bit of noice... then every part will die instantly without smoking. After finding the problem and reordering the helio I recognized that only one esc boots after connecting it the right way - so new ESCs to reorder. The RX doesn't want to give any stickinputs to the fc... well... vtx transmits an image, but haven't check smart audio, yet... at the end: better than loosing the entire bird...
Man, last week I spent an hour on my own trying to figure those 5V and Current jumpers out-The Helio manual is worded poorly.
Thanks for this video, Joshua. Really cleared things up!👍
