Well done Malc, your preparation and ride strategy clearly paid off. Terrific result, thanks for the insight and I'm pleased to see you enjoyed the event too! 👍
Great time and videoing as well, I've read other participants not overly complimentary comments, but they don't seem to appreciate the nature of the event, mainly that it's not a race . Well done !
It did seem like a lot of people did it as a race which is not what PBP should be about. You can still go fast if you want to and enjoy the experience.
Well done Malcolm. It’s really good to hear a positive ride report. Very sensible pacing Carrying food and rehydrating was sensible too. Nice that you acknowledged the hospitality of local French people. This was a really inspiring video. Thank you
Very nice documentary! Never realised it was such a huge event, you've covered quite some aspects of it. And many congratulations on finishing in such a time! BTW, the dedication of the volunteers is amazing indeed !
I had practiced a lot with using carb energy drink throughout the qualifying events. I used to get alot of bloating on rides longer than 200k so I decided to strip it back to 1 fuel source only (carb drink). Once I knew that worked I could start adding in more items. For PBP I used Torq products and had with me 14 energy drink sachets, 14 torq flapjacks and 14 torq gels. This got me through until about 100k to go. I practiced and dialled in my fueling strategy well before the event so I knew it would be ok for me. Check out my video on what to eat on a long ride too. Hope that helps.
Great ride, Malcolm! i was there too, finished PBP#4... I think swimming makes one a better cyclist...any thoughts? For certain, swimming helps prevent "shermer's neck" !
Excellent presentation and my compliments on one of the most beautiful bikes and stylish bike setups I’ve seen. I found the choice of a gravel bike extremely interesting. If I may ask, what groupset, gear combination, tire choice, and tire size did you select? I’m buying a new bike currently and am interested in your selections. Thank You
Thank you. I chose a gravel bike as I also wanted to do some gravel events too, they are well setup for bikepacking and Audax events. My Cervelo has GRX di2, 48/31 front and 11/34 rear gearing which is a great range for faster sections and getting up climbs with a heavy bike. I had 32mm continental 4 seasons for a bit more comfort. Only thing I would change would be the TT bars, my back was hurting from them being setup too low.
@@tricoachmalc8266 Thank you so much. I’m in my 60’s and am looking for an all around, pretty much, do it all bike and am considering a gravel bike, then replacing the tires with more of a road tread. I appreciate your response and again my compliments on your bike and especially your accomplishment.
I filled my whole frame bag with food. 14 energy drink sachets, 14 torq flapjacks and 14 gels. Then I ate at some of the controls, especiially in the last day.
Thanks for the video. Was there any time when you could not see a cyclist in front or behind? Did you notice many non std bikes, like 3 wheel trikes or recumbents
Thank you. If there was a time I couldn’t see another cyclist I knew they was one just round the corner. It was great to see so many cyclists from around the world. There were a lot of recumbent bikes and velomobiles, amazing effort to finish PBP in one of those.
May I ask how/ where do you sleep? Do you carry a blow up matress? Where do you store or lock your bike while asleep. Great effort maybe I'll ride this in '27.
You need to complete qualifying events the year of PBP. This involves completing a 200k, 300k, 400k and a 600k Audax. Then there is a pre registration stage, registration period and finally you get a place. PBP is also only on every 4 years so the next edition will be 2027.
Thank you 🙂. I had 32mm continental 4 seasons. I've enjoyed the 32mm tyres for extra comfort on the longer distance rides. They just had normal inner tubes in and I carried 2 spare tubes.
I've always been a fan of continental for road tyres, there are a lot of options which are all good choices. If you are after comfort I would go for 32mm tyres.
Thank you 🙂. I didn't utilise the bag drop as I carried everything I needed with me including the majority of my food. It definitely helped me get through he control points quickly. Chapeau for doing it on a tandem 👏
Great video, well done. Really useful video to understand what PBP is about, hope I'll have a chance to do it in 2027.
It was nice to meet you and face the headwind together malcolm. Good Luck and have fun at Challenge roth😊😊
Thank you, it was great to ride with you too through the headwind. Well done.
Great time you finished in!! Also a very positive video from PBP 2023, Ive watched 3 now where the rider DNFed.
Thank you.
Nice to watch a positive report on PBP by someone who actually finished!
Thank you, I loved PBP and will definitely be back to do it again.

love how you were chasing me for the first day haha
Haha yes I was looking out for you, must have passed you early on while you were resting in the ditch.
Well done, an amazing time and thank you for the great video; inspirational.👍😎
Thank you 🙂
Thanks for putting this together so quickly - it was great to see the ride for myself.

Congratulations and well done. A great achievement.
Thank you 🙂
Great ride! Looks fun, I'd ride with ya, unfortunately don't think I could keep your pace 😜
Thanks 🙂
that was fast! good job! i was in the same wave N068, unfortunately i finished 5 hours over. but yes it was a wonderful experience 🤙
Great ride. Great video 👍
Thank you 🙂
Looks like you rode through the third night. That's impressive. I slept at Carhaix as well as Quedillac, and still had trouble staying awake.
Thanks, I had it in my sights to do a sub 70hr at that point so kept riding.
well done, great video
Thank you 🙂
Chapeau 🎩

Thank you 🙂. The volunteers were amazing.
Huge respect to you. Tracked some friends doing this. You all amaze me. Respect 👌
It was an amazing experience, thank you 🙂
+1 subscriber , thanks to A.W. ;)
Thank you 🙂
Could you post a bit more about your food choices on bike?

Nice work. A friend of mine finished n a very similar time. She was saying the temps were 45 degrees in the day and dropping to 7 overnight.
Yes it definitely felt that hot during the afternoon each day. It was hard to stay hydrated and not suffer in the heat.

@@AlanJohnsonSunbird A gravel bike is a great choice for an all round bike. As you say stick some road tyres on and its a good road bike too.
Incredible time! How did you keep going like that?!?
Just cracked on lol 🙂
crikey how much food did you carry!! cant just be powder?! worked wonders not needing to stop at controls
I filled my whole frame bag with food. 14 energy drink sachets, 14 torq flapjacks and 14 gels. Then I ate at some of the controls, especiially in the last day.

How does someone from the US even register for this? The website is very confusing.

Lovely video.
Thoroughly enjoyable to watch!
What was your tyre set-up?

Looking for my "goldilocks" tyre for road(ish) rides on a gravel bike!
Too many options😅😂🤣‼️

wow you got well ahead of the bulge on the way back ! nice
At 4:12, I don't see your light
You can’t start without lights. They check your lights before you start and at every checkpoint when it’s starting to get dark 👍.
@@tricoachmalc8266 sure! It is just that I did not manage to see it while you were describing your set up
Don't begin to say unsupported. Kudo's to you if you did truly unsupported. We finished 1991 tandem with wife, useless hours off bike.
Thank you 🙂. I didn't utilise the bag drop as I carried everything I needed with me including the majority of my food. It definitely helped me get through he control points quickly. Chapeau for doing it on a tandem 👏
