That old Loar's sound was as solid as a block of steel! G and D strings sound like rosewood bars of a marimba. A lot of modern pickers don't like that keen cutting sound and tone.
Had a tape of this for years but not a player to play it on. Thanks for the link! Good stuff and interesting to hear earlier chord progressions again. Funny to hear Bill say "I missed that damned thing again" at the end of "Smokey Mt. Schottische". Love his version of "Done Gone". Has anyone ever heard a name for the uptempo "D" tune around 16:35?
The only man I ever knew who could hold his own with Bill like this was Joe Stuart. And that would put this in the early 70's. Some of these melodies made their way onto the Masters of Blue Grass. Others weren't played in 66 like the Watson Blues.... I might be wrong and have been before, but I think this is early 70's.
I would be eternally grateful if someone who really knows would post the names of the nameable tunes and their start times on this recording. It’s pure gold!

My Two Cents. This is indeed the 1966 lineup of the Band with Rowan, Greene and Lamar Grier on Banjo (1 tune). Great little piece of Tape Here!
this is so great! Thanks a lot for this Dave :D

Doug Hutchens The year seems suspect, but Richard Greene confirmed on Facebook. 👍🏼
Both Richard Greene and Peter Rowan have confirmed the veracity of the content presented here, Doug Hutchens.
