In celebration of Black History Month, we're highlighting a founding member of Jack Daniel's award winning recipe, from a man who was not recognized as "The Godfather of Tennessee Whiskey," until late.
Nathan "Nearest" Green, born a slave, became the first African-American Master Distiller in America and was employed by Jasper “Jack” Daniel at Jack Daniel's Distillery. Known as Uncle Nearest, his methodology in filtering alcohol through sweet gum charcoal became the defining factor in what some consider the finest alcohol to come out of Tennessee. Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey is what we call it. Uncle Nearest called it his best!
Brown-Forman Corporation, which now owns Jack Daniel's acknowledged Green as Jack Daniel's first Master Distiller in 2017 and compensated his family for his creation. Now recognized worldwide, Uncle Nearest is considered and ranked as the "World's Best" and "Top 5 Whiskies in the World," winning several awards in recent years.
The Uncle Nearest brand, wholly owned by Uncle Nearest, Inc., an all minority-led business, encompasses a premium aged whiskey with a blend of 8-14 year old, an 11 year old minimum age single barrel, and a 7 year old small batch offering; all mellowed using the Lincoln County Process, a unique filtering of bourbon through sugar maple charcoal. This process has been confirmed to have been brought to Tennessee by enslaved people and taught by Nearest Green to the most famous Tennessee Whiskey maker of all time.
We will be carrying his original formula at the restaurant this week, both the 1820 and 1856. They are 100 proof and delicious! If you can't join us this week, join the live Taste Testing by Total Wine & More with some of Green's descendants online at www.totalwine.com/live-stream.... Register today!
Learn more about Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey and the Nearest Green Distillery by going to their pages or visiting the museum and park, curated by Renown author, investor and CEO of Uncle Nearest, Fawn Weaver. Weaver launched the Nearest Green Foundation to commemorate Green thru a museum, memorial park, and book about his life.

I bought a bottle of the black label 1856 when I learned that it was a black owned whiskey company. I didn't yet know about the history with Jack Daniels. It is good. You can taste the quality.

Will vouch for Glenfiddich and The Glenlivet. Haven't tried Dalmore, but will add it to the list to try. Since you like Jim Beam, give Jim Beam's Red Stag a try or Knob Creek, also by the Jim Beam brand.

At the time of this filming, we did not have Gentleman's Jack on the shelf and didn't have it stocked in the bar. That did come in at a later date. We would buy new drinks as our customers requested them.

This is a false story. The product in that Jack Daniel's bottle has nothing to do with Uncle Nearest. Was Nathan Greene a slave that "worked" at a distillery that Jasper Newton (Jack Daniel's real name) worked at as a boy? Yeah, sure probably one of many. Was Nathan Greene distilling his own recipe? Of course not. Jasper worked at the man's general store. The owner had several businesses in town. When Jasper was about 12 he was sent to sweep floors and learn the basics of making his owner's whiskey at his boss's distillery. Of course the slaves showed him what to do. Someone showed THEM when they started working there. The "how" of making whiskey isn't any more complicated than the "how" of making pasta. Jack Daniel's put this story out 6 months before signing their largest sponsorship deal in their history with..... The NBA. Fast forward to today after the NBA dropped them for Hennesey, now everyone is telling Brown-Forman that they should pay reparations to Uncle Nearest's family, LOL! Boy that marketing scam backfired on them. And the juice in that Uncle Nearest bottle is sourced. Uncle Nearest doesn't even make their own whiskey. Jasper Newton opened a distillery decades later in a different location, using a different mashbill, adding the sugar maple charcoal filtering, making their own toasted barrels using limestone water.
