  • Here's a video I shot a while back, speaking Japanese with as many strangers as I can! Let's see how they react.^^
All the places I visited in Hida Takayama are listed here:
    www.hida.jp/en...
A special thank you to the city of Takayama for inviting me out! While the usual festivals are cancelled until next year they still want to keep their city alive and show you what to expect next year.
This video is sponsored but all opinions and shenanigans are my own. Thanks for having me!

Hi! My name is Loretta, a girl from the U.S. who moved to Japan! I'm here on the MEXT scholarship program as a graduate student, studying to get a Masters in Business Administration. Here are some answers to common questions:
    1. Do I Speak Japanese? Yep! I was taught formally in High School and have been speaking now for over 15 years.
    2. What are you studying? I'm a recent grad of Yokohama National University's "Masters of Business Administration" Program
    3. How old are you?: Year of the dragon. :D The math is up to you.
    4. How did you get into Japanese school?: tinyurl.com/yb8...
    5. What camera equipment do you use?: I film my videos with a Canon 60D using a 30mm Sigma Art Lens and I edit with Sony Vegas Pro 10 (with some help from photoshop). Additional cameras include GoPro Hero 7 Black and DJI Majic Air

One of my favorite memories of my (unfortunately short) time in Japan was when I bought a yukata in Japanese, including asking which obi would pair best with the yukata I was planning to buy. The owner then ran next door and got me a little bell charm. She said it was a gift, and told me to keep up my studies and come back someday. I still have the charm tied to my purse.

This reminded me of my month long trip (before the coronavirus hit hard) whist visiting a rural town in Oita for lunch. I was pretty much the last customer and he was closing for the day. I decided to strike a conversation in Japanese (to his surprise) whilst footing the bill and it ended up in us having a nice chat over various topics such as why I prefer countrysides over big cities, his restaurant & what was I planning to do in Japan since I was travelling all over the country. It ended up with him offering to send me to the train station as soon as he learnt about my evening plans. He said it was to thank me for making an effort to come all the way off the beaten path and what really surprised me was that he didn't just drive me to the nearest station which he could, but he sent me all the way to the closest large town around 40 minutes away! I hope to pay the owner a visit after travel restrictions are lifted. I hope his business isn't so affected but with covid & railways connecting that part of town being swept away, things aren't looking so great for such a rural town ):

Totally agree - farmers markets are a fantastic place to practice speaking a foreign language. Before visiting my uncle, aunt, and cousin in Greece, my Greek was not enough to carry a conversation. I discovered a "Teach Yourself Greek" book in my auntie's library. When no one was around, I studied from this book. I then went to farmers markets like Loretta to check out the wares. The vendors love the company and conversation when customers aren't around. Before returning to the States, my Greek family was shocked to see me conversing with my uncle's sister, who didn't speak a word of English at the time.

Wow! nice video. My wife and I travelled to Japan in 2018 and Takayama was one of the places we visited. Our stay was short but it is at the top of our list of most favorite place. The buildings reminded me of Japan of yesteryear and going through the variety of shops was so much fun. We did try the Hida beef. It was actually a hamburger joint but the best I've ever had. We also walked through a street lined with food vendors, attended the brewery for Sake tasting, and finally strolled through the Hida Fold Village. All of it so memorable.

I loved seeing and learning about this part of Japan from your video, and wished I was there enjoying that steak and sushi meal with you. Heaven, indeed!!! The editing and overall look of this video was really, really good, too! When you were filming the guy cooking the steak (at the first steak place you went), the sizzling sounds of the grill while you filmed him cutting the beef just seemed so top notch, editing-wise.
    Well done!!!!!
