Every day, over 130 people in the U.S. die from an opioid overdose.
Dan Peres barely escaped adding his name to that list.
During his tenure as editor of Details magazine amidst the heyday of New York media when magazines really mattered, Dan developed an opioid addiction that escalated to 60 pills a day. A powerful yarn, today he shares his story -- what it was like, what happened, and how he found a way out.
If you or someone you know is suffering, call the Substance Abuse And Mental Health Services national helpline at 1-800-662-HELP.
And you can find an AA meeting in your area at aa.org

I am a huge Rich Roll fan AND an Organ Procurement Coordinator. I work with donor families, I allocate organs from organ donors. Many, many, way too many of them are from accidental opioid overdoses. When the reality is it is easier to get drugs than it is to get help for an addiction? Then, people addicted should sign up to be organ donors. At least that way, when you over do it, humanity will be benefit. I have nothing else to add... I've lost people to the crisis personally... it's so painful. Beyond words. If you make it out, you're one of the lucky ones.

I usually listen to the Rich Roll podcast and others while I drive, travel or cook. I find every interview engaging, but Dan Peres's story was particularly riveting, enough that I just sat and listened. And I may sit and listen to it again. It is one of the very view interviews about addiction that I feel I can share with addicts or family members of addicts without offending. Dan's story welcomes us all. I look forward to the book. Thank you both.

I was heartened by this man -- did a degree at Cambridge and while there met my best friend finishing a doctorate in international corporate law. He was captain of the rowing team == go light blues! very handsome vr funny and absolutely brilliant. He was nominally bisexual, which meant in his case a lot of testorone sp driven drive. Like Cary Grant he was at pains to keep his identity available only to his close friends and they included, to adopt Rich Roll speak, some seriously alpha hetero dudes. My Dad wanted me to marry him; hard to find a friend, which is what they were, He died in 1988 of AIDS. Needed to get that out of my system .Re opioids. No secret that I have been a long time admirer of the late Tom Petty, was lucky to meet him and have been working on his videos for some time. He had a breakdown in the wake of a messy divorce, resorted to heroin and was lucky and determined enough to find both help and to quote the Divine Comedy, his Beatrice.
A week before the Heartbreakers' 40th anniversary tour he fractured his hip so loaded with vicodan which he feared and adrenylin sp kept him going, 2 days back at home unbearable pain; overdose. I was protective of my brilliant Dad when he developed late onset dementia and protective of Tom for analogous reasons. This podcast meant a lot to me; tx to you both.

I been battling 10 years with heroin. 6 months longest clean & several weeks clean time.
Just done 6 days clean & really trying to drop it. Not IV just smoke & 60ml methadone.
    Fingers crossed.

I was on 60 Norco a day, which is like 120 Vicodin a day. It was horrible. What was worse was when I got off of them, they just loaded me up on psych drugs and that withdrawal was worse than opioids.WAY WORSE and almost killed me. The last medication I came off (in which i was NOT addicted to) was Lorazepam and it was hell on earth for 2 years.

I am on a minimal benzo script -- my sister Colette as low as she can go on antidepressants. Her script is harder on the liver than .5 clonazepam. Price we pay

The CDC numbers are wrong about opioids. The numbers are for heroin and fentanyl. Your story makes it harder for people who live with chronic pain. I live in West Virginia and it’s very sad to see workers who have been hurt on their jobs, physical labor, and were taking opioids 20 years or more never being addicted to them. The doctors here have completely cut everyone off. These people weren’t taking 60 pills a day they would take The prescription of four or five a day so that they could work without pain. hurtlike you were but they have to go to work hard physical jobs on top of their injuries year after year and now no doctor in the state will give them anything. People are getting i’ll kinds of operations with absolutely no pain medication! If you don’t believe me go to the Pee network. It’s very sad and cruel. I think you should know

the cdc is killing people, they don't give anyone nothing for pain, they want us to commit suicide, they are very evil,

Most of the people we hear online talking about addiction have a perspective that is a safe distance away from the reality, but when i stumbled across this interview today I stopped to listen to someone speaking from a level of knowing, and your stories were relatable but where is the insight? Why does ot seem like you know so little about treatment? I feel like this was a missed opportunity to have a really important conversation about why we are failing 92% of the people who need help. Its great that you are sharing your story, but you aren't the first person to do that. What would be truly important is if you looked deeper at this problem. This does not seem like an answer anyone who had ever been to treatment would give. You know addiction but how did you get clean? You were ready and you made a decision. You have an important platform, and I felt the wind sucked right out of me when you ended up sounding just like Dr Drew rather than being a whistle blower about all the empty promises. No one cares about addicts. No other population could be treated like this. . My son went to a total of 8 rehabs spending 18 months at inpatient treatment. He wanted to get clean, and he ended up dying, and I thought he was an outlier. Turns out he was the norm. Why aren't we talking about this? Why aren't you talking about this? A few days after Noah died my therapist casually remarked that there was less than a 10% chance that treatment was going to help. I went numb. That night I went home and in horror looked at the losing battle we had been fighting all along. This should be an opportunity raise awareness, call for change, make a difference. Isn't that the point in writing a book like this? "Ask not why the addiction ask why the pain." Dr. Gabor Mate also look into the work of Dr. Lance Dodes

I sent this out into my 12 step world and the response was overwhelming. I got sober in an NA group because it was down the street and I had zero excuse to not show up -- have a loveable small dog now an AA dog who was my emissary in this brave new world. In Toronto Canada a lot of people are working to get meetings online and to connect by phne when people are vulnerable during this socially isolating period due to pandemic, so once again, tx for public service. I don't follow Stephen Fry's advice to not read comments -- my sense is that your audience base, Rich, is mostly about endurance, health certainly, but not entirely comfortable with recovery -- the reservoir dogs went over well because everyone was so macho -- please I know you live in California but never interview Gwynneth Paltrow -- such a brilliant actor and the rest …. definite no comment.

No offense because I do believe this dude has been through hard times, but he is sounding a bit (unfortunately) cooked up, and so does his story. Not sure I follow it. Wish it wasn’t the case (at least perceived on my part) because the topic is incredibly important. He’s a writer of tales and he’s sown a good one, I’ll give him that credit.

I am a garden variety recovering boozer but initially got sober in NA -- don't have a problem with his veracity but several viewers expressed reactions like yours. People knew what to expect with Russel Brand and are used to way over the odds navy Seals; am trying to understand reactions.

    • @thekeystone7963
      @thekeystone7963 4 ปีที่แล้ว

evelyn baron To the contrary. I feel most people are not so interested in such an overly dramatic story, and can read the tea leaves. In my opinion it would be more impactful to have someone on that doesn’t have the heroic (i.e. navy seal) story. I certainly do not want to speak for everyone but I believe, generally speaking, a majority of folks are very tired of that. It does not resonate. We cannot relate to these stores and therefore the result is impotent. I’m proud to hear of your recovery and wish you nothing but the best. To me, you may and most likely do have something better to tell, which would grab a hold of the vast majority. What do I (the majority) have in common with this man, almost nothing. He’s a story teller. He’s selling. What he’s (according to his own account) always done.

@@thekeystone7963 I love it when I get thoughtful responses like this one --many tx. My friend has a lot in common with Rich Roll; taking extreme measures to heal and his guests are likely to be like him.
And yes I do admire him. But think of his situation; corporate law, not that open to other cultures or generations; seriously vindictive wife; but he truly means well....My friend is back in Scotland, I want to be accountable to the vulnerable people around me in these hard times. I love my dog. Am happy for your reply.
