Genius. Lovely gesture putting the Hávamál in the language of the range and open spaces of the West. It brings the past forward and gives it a vital truth that reveals its timelessness. I have relatives--mostly older ones, that talk with that rhythm and with those same words. It really brings the stoic individualism to life. Thanks.
I appreciate the heart I hear in your voice as you introduce the dedication to your grandfather. and this translation is by far my favorite, I've been sharing it with everyone, so I would just like to tell you thank you
I don't believe anyone suggested that Dr. Crawford is a Heathen. I simply stated that as a Wyoming cowgirl who also happens to be Heathen, meaning myself being a cowgirl and a Heathen, I enjoyed his take on the Hávamál. The COWBOY Hávamál.
I wonder how many other folk that have grown up in a rural agricultural lifestyle, have gravitated to Norse culture? So many correlations to ranch lifestyle even in the bible belt.
Man, Crawford, you have me missing my days fighting wild land fires in Colorado and the rest of the west. I wish I knew your Grandfather as well. Thanks for sharing this beautiful cowboy poetry.
Fantastic! As a native bilingual in English and Spanish (born in Seville, Spain) -- also a linguist, though specialized in English philology --, I can just imagine an Andalusian version of the Hávavál!!! With all the cursing and the common sense, it seems that cowboys, Andalusians and the Hámavál have a heck of a lot in common! Oh, and I'm also an open-minded Ásatruar!
Thank you for sharing that. It is good to hear the author's interpretation. Although, I have to admit, when I read this section in your book, I kept hearing Sam Elliot in my head.
Certainly a much more thoughtful and wise than a little book I once read called "Don't squat with yer spurs on". This was brilliant sir. Thank you. I've ordered several of your books and am very excited to dive in. Thanks again.
I love the advice to eat something early in the day. It is always unpleasant to end up at someone's house, expecting to eat soon, and to find out that dinner's not going to be for a few hours yet. You sit there, trying to be sociable when you are hungry, and not succeeding very well! I've learnt that letting this happen is my OWN damn fault, not my host's fault! Nothing kept me from eating half a sandwich before leaving my house.
Haven't memorised a poem in years. Not since I was a kid in Baghdad, probably. I think I'll commit this one to memory. Gives me incentive to keep reading your book, too.
Great stuff, Mr. Crawford! This is a really inspired idea - and it works surprisingly well! The Cowboy Hávamál manages to capture the tone and the spirit of the old norse original while making it accessible to modern English speakers. Tip of the (cowboy-)hat from Denmark.
Hearing this maked me think that a certain one eyed gentleman, with a liking for wide brimmed hats would feel right at home in the landscapes and amongst the good people of Colorado.
The way this was read and translated is so fucking awesome. Being Born and raised in Northern California this version made some versus so close and easy to feel and understand. Awesome job brother. Skål!
I love all your videos, but I love this one more than all of them combined. Even though I'm still Asatru at my core (long-ago conversion), I'm still more American than anything else, and this speaks to my bones. Thank you so much for this.
This is simply wonderful! I'm so glad I found your channel. You are very informative and I really enjoy watching your videos! Thank you for what you are doing. I'm fairly certain I'm going to be purchasing your book today. Have a safe, happy and wonderful new year!
It has been very easy to become a fan of your work for us out here in youtubeland. Thank you. This is unquestionably my favorite of your videos. Well done
"The world ain't aiming to please you." (Ain't that the truth!) Elli er ekki heldur ferskja. Thank you so much, Dr. Crawford. Your work is a blessing to us.
I know this is a little late, but you should really check with Amazon and your Publisher. Because your readings would be perfect for this. I'd buy it in English and an Old Norse Version if you were to record both. I saw this mentioned on your most recent patreon release video, and then saw this comment.
Jackson Crawford You could find a second one if your contract allows it. And yeah, I’d be one of those who’d want to buy it if they can. I have to add that this being reminiscent of his grandfather probably makes for the touching tone or voice in this piece. I never cared about, not even considered, in fact was not even aware of the existence of Old Norse until recently when I started listening to your channel, more or less by mere coincidence as it was just a TH-cam suggestion while on the look or for Swedish tutorials - now I am hooked and was straightaway simply on hearing the sound of “ek ann thir” (sorry, only have the normal d so I used the English spelling it probably would have if it was English), because it immediately sounded like the Elvish in The Lord of the Rings which I really love, it is my favourite book (of course it adds up that it would being written by Tolkien but oh well, having heard more words I actually think it sounds more like Orc tongue, no insult intended, Old Norse sounds of course nicer!).
Great, profound, and somewhat poignant to hear some of that advice on sobriety after hearing your latest. Advice that would have made my young adulthood happier.
This is great. Reminds me of the times back in the day when my father and I would wake up really early on Saturday mornings at the crack of dawn to watch our "cowboy"(westerns) shows.
This was incredibly good. A Havamal translation in relatively recent parlance goes so so far in allowing the modern reader to understand what is said. Thank you!
For just a minute, i thought I was listening to my Grandfather...who would start off by saying, "I'm not the world's smartest man, but....." That's when yo knew it was going to get philosophical deep.
I was listening to Tim McGraw's "Humble and Kind" and it reminded me a little of the Cowboy Havamal. It had the same practical advice feel to it. I enjoyed it a lot.
How true about hospitality among Scandinavians. When a guest among neighbors we were taught to refuse second offerings. My dad was of Nordic blood and he passed along the manners he was raised with.
Thank you so much. That was incredible and I was entranced the whole time. I believe I could listen to this a thousand times and still take something new from it.
I first found this after meeting with your old advisor at UW-Madison, while looking into their new Folklore PhD program. My only regret is that I didn't first read it when I lived out in North Dakota!
Awesome! With your honorable poetry to memorialize your grandfather, you've made my mind grow, and warmed this cowboy poet's heathen heart. Thank you Jackson Crawford, Ph.D., for this contemporary cowboy version of the Hávamál. Yes, please copyright your work, "The Cowboy Hávamál", if it has not already been done, within your published book. I am buying your translation of the Poetic Edda. Standing up to yelp, and hollar: Bravo!
That was pretty awesome, sounded great, and put quite a few stanzas in a new light for me. I'll definitely be checking out your translation if the Edda when I can
I know it's pretentious to say but I can really relate to the part about not getting too smart for your own good. I was depressed for a long time but I think I'm finally starting to get some of that wisdom.
I've always said Keep your neck red, and your mind clear, shut your mouth and watch your rear. And when your walking down that long winding road of Life look way on down the road. Most important Never Loose Your Sense of Humor!
This really drives home how the cowboy spirit and the Viking spirit were essentially the same. Both free wheeling pioneers and explorers. Perhaps it could be called the spirit of the west.
That's a pretty good translation and interpretation. I've read several versions of Håvamål, the cowboy twist was a bit weird for me at first but it worked really well, it didn't lose any of the wisdom or the tone of the poem, great job.
Hah, I'd subscribed to your channel recently without noticing you were the guy who wrote the book I was reading. Did you have a shorter clip from this up before? You were outside in the other one I'm thinking of (that I hope I didn't imagine). I had to skip forward to the appendix after seeing this :) Thank you for making this stuff accessible, relateable, and enjoyable!
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, I did once have some readings of short sections from the Cowboy Hávamál, but I have gotten a lot better at making these videos over the years and I decided to replace them with this complete reading.
This is great. I feel like some of the attitude that the original composer might have had when first creating the havamal could have been conveyed here.
Dr.Crawford: as a child I came across a Scandinavian legend called "Britta and the Norns," no so much different from "Sleeping Beauty." Where could I find it (I:ve unsuccessfully sought it in different anthologies so maybe you could give some advice).
Genius. Lovely gesture putting the Hávamál in the language of the range and open spaces of the West. It brings the past forward and gives it a vital truth that reveals its timelessness. I have relatives--mostly older ones, that talk with that rhythm and with those same words. It really brings the stoic individualism to life. Thanks.
This is my favourite video on the entire internet.
Schöner Mann
I appreciate the heart I hear in your voice as you introduce the dedication to your grandfather. and this translation is by far my favorite, I've been sharing it with everyone, so I would just like to tell you thank you
As a Wyoming cowgirl who is also Heathen, I quite enjoyed this take on the Hávamál. Thank you.
I like it very much, too. I am a New England Heathen.
Corrrect. I believe +Tina and I were both simply expressing our gratitude to Dr. Crawford for his work.
Exactly. It is so interesting and we appreciate it.
All the best to everyone.

western Vikings, awesome idea.
Shush or somenoe in Hollywood may actually make it true
isn't that what "cowboys" are anyway?
Plenty of Swedes up Minnesota way.
Norwegians too
incredible reading. i am emotional. so many words to live by, and from the words of our ancestors and grandparents no less
I have took the time, too have my son listen to this version. He said, “ I need to listen to this every chance I get.“ Takk, Dr. Jackson!
Dr. Crawford, I heard this first in your poetic edda audio book. I loved it!!! It was a great modernization of the Havamal without losing the meaning
Hearing this maked me think that a certain one eyed gentleman, with a liking for wide brimmed hats would feel right at home in the landscapes and amongst the good people of Colorado.
Thank you. With the unpleasant things I'm dealing with right now, this really resonated with me. Thank you for sharing.
This is timeless advice. It can apply now, and in the future.
LOVE THIS!!!!! Jackson Crawford is a wise man.. I'm sure his grandfather would love this as well! Such a great twist to the Lore!
The way this was read and translated is so fucking awesome. Being Born and raised in Northern California this version made some versus so close and easy to feel and understand. Awesome job brother. Skål!
"Bjorn and raised"
I love all your videos, but I love this one more than all of them combined. Even though I'm still Asatru at my core (long-ago conversion), I'm still more American than anything else, and this speaks to my bones. Thank you so much for this.
What a wonderful homage to memorialize your Grandfather's voice in the wisdom of the Havamal. I loved it!

Awesome translation! A fan in Bandera, Texas.
Wow,it sound so smooth like this.
Cudos2u Jackson Crawford for reading that without tears your grandpa is proud of you boy
Quite fitting, I liked it a lot.
Eg vonar du får ei god jul!:)
You have a fantastic voice, and I truly enjoyed listening to this. Have you considered recording The Poetic Edda as an audiobook?
Thanks for the kind words. I don't think my publisher does audiobooks.
I know this is a little late, but you should really check with Amazon and your Publisher. Because your readings would be perfect for this. I'd buy it in English and an Old Norse Version if you were to record both. I saw this mentioned on your most recent patreon release video, and then saw this comment.
WesleyLutz3D I would get Ólafur Darri Ólafsson to read it, he has a deep manly voice that is excellent for reading Icelandic.
Jackson Crawford

This is the most awesome thing I've ever heard. Than you for this video, I've been following your channel for a while.
This rendering of the Havamal is respectful and at the same time completely alive. Time for me to support Jackson Crawford on Patreon.
This was incredibly good. A Havamal translation in relatively recent parlance goes so so far in allowing the modern reader to understand what is said. Thank you!
"The world isn't out to please you" I'm a bit glad, I have the feeling it wouldn't be good at it anyway.
Haha I know that feeling.
For just a minute, i thought I was listening to my Grandfather...who would start off by saying, "I'm not the world's smartest man, but....." That's when yo knew it was going to get philosophical deep.
what a beautiful way to blend 2 things into something deeply personal and intimate :)
Wonderful video. The idea is fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done Professor Crawford. (and what an awesome man Mr. J. Crawford)
I was listening to Tim McGraw's "Humble and Kind" and it reminded me a little of the Cowboy Havamal. It had the same practical advice feel to it. I enjoyed it a lot.
What a beautiful juxtaposition, these wise words and your grandfather's delivery. Sincerely.
Reading Old West Norse poetry in American Old West English
Perfect advice. Timeless.
What a beautiful tribute....well done!

Outstanding! Thank you for creating this version.
I'm from Oklahoma and I've read the poetic edda but this would have been so much easier to understand at first
I'm not really sure how to put it into words just how incredible that was. Thank you dearly for sharing that!
that was fantastic! Thank you, sir!
Thank you so much. That was incredible and I was entranced the whole time. I believe I could listen to this a thousand times and still take something new from it.
Love this so much. This is truly universal, timeless wisdom.
Beautiful! 💛🙏💛 Thank you so much for sharing. Hugs & sunshine 🌞 N
Wow. Beautiful retelling of the advice. Thank you.
Have rewatched this twice now. Really stuck with me.
This is wonderful. Thank you!
Same
This nearly brought tears to my eyes. Beautiful.
This is simply genious, I mean it! This is excellent inspiration for continuing on writing my "cowboy" saga.
I first found this after meeting with your old advisor at UW-Madison, while looking into their new Folklore PhD program.
My only regret is that I didn't first read it when I lived out in North Dakota!
Beautiful. The Gods and Grandpas smile.
Praise be to Cowboy Odin.

Thank you
so much love ❤️
ancient wisdom recast and retold!
Love it. Record audiobooks!
That was wonderful, thank you!
Beautiful. I needed this today, thank you for sharing it.
This is beautiful!
Excellent - Thank you
thanks for that, I can understand some of this better than various other translations... cheers!
This is awesome. Thanks for the treasure!
Outstanding reading!
That was pretty awesome, sounded great, and put quite a few stanzas in a new light for me. I'll definitely be checking out your translation if the Edda when I can
Just freakin' amazing, Sir. Well done... honestly.
When I read that from my copy of the book the voice in my head was like Slim Pickens, it sounds so much different when you read it.
My friend let me borrow your book to read this it was great I wish I had a copy of my own. Hopefully one day I can buy it!
This is just an awesome video, I caught the chills several times!
I absolutely loved this! Thank you!
***** yes, FIVE stars ! Excellent.

Strong Ecclesiastes feel in this too, especially towards the end.
Beautiful!

Það var ekkert! Gleðileg jól og farsælt nýtt ár.
(I've now mostly exhausted my modern Icelandic--I have "Sesame Street Spanish" level skillz.)
Brilliant ! Sounds just like that advice my grandfather would give
interesting version, first time I've heard it in english
I wouldn't mind if you published this as a standalone, I'd buy it.
Very good video sir
This is great. I feel like some of the attitude that the original composer might have had when first creating the havamal could have been conveyed here.
"Where there's more than one man you will eventually have a fight" yep
I really enjoyed that one
Dr.Crawford: as a child I came across a Scandinavian legend called "Britta and the Norns," no so much different from "Sleeping Beauty." Where could I find it (I:ve unsuccessfully sought it in different anthologies so maybe you could give some advice).
Snilld!! Greetings from Iceland
Just what my grandpa would have called, "cowboy logic.'
Beautiful
