This is such goals for me in the future when I’m a mother. I think it would be cool to teach them to put stops to people making fun of periods too. Or if they happen to see someone stained to let them borrow their sweaters. This def should be normalized

I wish sex ed and sex in general had been normalized for my husband who was raised with all the bs of evangelical “Christianity” (atheist by the time we got together because he’s too smart for that crap).
He was never a child about periods, (we discovered I had horrible fibroids and endo a year after marriage, so he had heard a LOT about my pain and struggles every month and he was amazing through my hysterectomy). But I did always appreciate that he was a LITTLE squeamish- not about my period or buying period products (very smart and successful 6’3” white guy, privileged from birth but raised with manners and humbleness- he rarely cares what ANYONE thinks of him because of a crazy innate confidence- if people don’t like him he assumes the are having a bad day 😂). But he was squeamish in like, about doing or saying the wrong thing. He was so sweet and gentle, and I’ll take that!
I kept my ovaries, and had PMDD (though its lessened over the years), and he still keeps my “cycles” charted on a ap so he doesn’t fight with me during that time. Gosh I love that man.

I love how Becky is always bringing attention to non-binary people, in every podcast she makes sure that everyone is represented and I respect her so much for that. "Take your tampons out ladies, anyone who bleeds take them out". All these women are just incredible and this is such an amazing podcast full of great information. It is so important and valuable to normalise everything that gets talked about by these women. Love from New Zealand!

Love the honest period talk! Do want to mention a few things in case any younger period havers are still insecure after watching: 1. It's okay to prefer pads. They make them much thinner now (Always is a great classic brand). It's not immature to wear pads and you don't have to wear tampons if you don't want. (I still wear pads at 25. Tampons make me feel like an upside-down wine bottle.) 2. Period underwear is great. It's essentially a water-resistant fabric plus extra absorbent padding in the crotch. The kind I use (Ruby Love) also has a "gusset" where you can add an extra pad for more protection. For me, they're better for lighter days, but still a great alternative to pads/tampons and a great option for any transfolk who want something less traditional/"feminine". 3. I noticed the ladies didn't talk about when they got their periods, but good to mention that it can vary wildly and you shouldn't worry about getting it at a certain time. Some people get theirs later in their teens. I got mine at age 9 so trust me, savor your years without it. If you're really concerned, check with your doc. 4. On that note, do your own research and be sure to advocate for yourself with docs. If you're having really bad period pain or irregular periods, you can and should speak up to get treatment. Many women with conditions like PCOS go undiagnosed for so long because they think (or are told) things are normal that aren't. You know your body best. Also, be sure to research and discuss different birth control methods with your doc. The pill can be beneficial for so many things, but it can also have side effects and is often treated as a one-size-fits-all solution bc medical sexism. Be extra careful with non-hormonal devices like IUDs as these products often aren't as vetted due to loopholes in the FDA approval process. For more info, check out websites like Planned Parenthood and Scarleteen. Talk with your friends about your periods and follow creators (like the YCSWU gals!) that talk about periods. You'd be amazed how many experiences you think are weird or gross are actually pretty universal!

    • @oursoph
      @oursoph 4 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      Very well said! 👏👏👏
I use pads too and I'm 30, anything else is just too painful for me as I have Endometriosis. They're much better now than when I first started my period and much more secure.
I wish they would have mentioned about if you think your period isn't normal to go get checked out. I used to have to take the week off school as mine were so painful but everyone thought I was over reacting. 15 years later I got my diagnosis of endometriosis and PCOS and I even had to fight for surgery to get that diagnosed as I wasn't believed about the pain

I love that our generation has led the way in normalizing open, shameless, period talks between ourselves, our partners, and our kids - even if it's still sometimes hard to get around the internalized shame. Story time: I started using the Diva Cup in 2010 and loved it. I used it and pantiliners for my period for a whole year with no issues. Until one day, it was just uncomfortable, leaking, giving me back pain... I tried to keep using it for the next couple of cycles but it was just annoying and uncomfortable... So I switched to cloth reusable pads, and never looked back.
Plot twist: turns out I had developed an ovarian cyst that changed the configuration of my insides ... It grew and grew without me knowing it was there, until this October when I was feeling particularly bloated and backed-up.....
That sucker was 7 by 4.5 by 4 inches! I am typing this from my recliner as I recover from the removal of the cyst, my left ovary, and fallopian tube!
Maybe once I am healed, I'll try the diva cup again!

I love that these ladies are so honest and open! It's so refreshing!
So here's the thing... I used to be one of those people like Becky that just couldn't even fathom "losing" a tampon. I'd heard about it and it just didn't seem possible. That is, until it happened to me. This was pretty recent actually. I'd just got my period back for the first time, 17 months after having my 3rd baby. It was HEAVY. Like, I'm talking a crime scene every time I went to the bathroom. I went through 2 boxes of tampons that week. It was absolutely the worst I'd ever experienced. Well near the end of my period I started noticing a very bad smell. Like a scary smell. I got very freaked out because it had been so long after having my baby before my period came back, I was bleeding like crazy and now I literally smelled like death. I just thought... "somethings wrong. Do I have cancer?". So I started Googling what a really bad smell coming from your vagina could mean and one of the most common things was a forgotten tampon. Still disbelieving I thought it couldn't hurt to check. I pulled out the tampon I was currently using and felt around. I didn't feel an extra string or anything but after investigating further I could feel that there was indeed a second tampon deep inside! I was HORRIFIED!!! I just couldn't believe it. And yes it was just as disgusting as they described.
Once I made the discovery I remembered a couple days before in the middle of the night I had resorted to using a regular tampon because I was out heavy ones and the following morning after a very sleepless night I'd had trouble with my tampon applicator. You know how sometimes they can be a little finicky? I think what happened was my period was so heavy and messy in the morning that I'd gotten distracted with the cleaning up process and forgotten that I hadn't taken it out the tampon yet. I just went right to putting in a new one. Surprisingly it didn't feel weird, only that at first I had struggled with the applicator. I guess having 3 babies, you've got a little extra wiggle room, lol.
Thankfully it had only been in there for a couple days and after it was removed the smell went away and it didn't cause any further problems.

Thank you for talking about menstrual cups!! I've been using one since 2011 and the only reason I even gave them a shot was that my friend gave me a gift certificate to a website that only sells them. At the time, I thought WTF? but now I realize she knew I probably wouldn't go against popular opinion, but she also knew cups are 1000% the way to go. I agree with Maggie that it can feel like you aren't even on your period because you only have to empty/clean it every 12 hours. I tell every woman I'm close to that I know about how awesome they are.
I also have a period pot that I bought at Goodwill for cheap for when I need to boil it. It's really not a big deal. And I have two cups: I bought one that has a "string" that will break the seal without having to put your finger up there. It's not as good as the Diva Cup, though, because it's super wide and hard to get in. Women who've had children might like it, though. It's called a Flex Cup.
Anyway, y'all please keep spreading the word! Whatever men who started marketing disposable pads/tampons need to be taught that they don't know what's best for us. Cups have been around since at least the 1930s, but the almighty $$$ buried them under a strategy that wants us to continually spend money. Eff the Pink Tax!!

Can I just say, the convo starting at 33:50 is fascinating from a male perspective. Just the sheer amount of upkeep that is needed and all that you have to consider. PH changes? Period sex? Toxic shock? Lost tampons?!....* pikachu face*

I use the Flex disks. They changed my period life. The way my body is shaped I can't use tampons so I had always used pads. The idea of period sex intrigued me so I tried Flex. I love them so much. My periods are way more comfortable now.

I have a very heavy flow and with other products I always stained, with the cup I'm all good and dandy I haven't stained since I started using. Love it.

As a narcoleptic, I do not recommend killing sleep 😂

as a fellow narcoleptic, i don’t recommend either, but if i HAD to choose one, i think sleep would go because I take medication to keep me awake and am already soooo tired (as you well know). plus if we really can’t sleep, then we wouldn’t fall asleep driving, doing tasks, sitting down, etc. food for my thoughts 🤷🏽‍♀️

Christopher Walken is the only one that gets to stay. Sprite gotta go, 7Up is better. Burritios can go, turkey and chicken burgers can stay.

I've been using a Saalt cup for a year now and I do agree you have to get over those hurdles of it being icky but man I'm so happy I made the change. Also they have a Facebook group that is super helpful and support. AND they just came out with a teen cup!
