How Did They Build The Airbus A380? | Giants In The Sky | Progress

  • The Airbus A380 is more advanced than any airliner that has flown before and can fly non-stop a third of the way around the world. It is three times as long as a blue whale and five times as heavy. The tip of the plane tail is as tall as an eight storey building. The four Rolls Royce engines, built in Derby, cost the same as four tons of solid gold.

I would love to see the double-decker Airbus A380 and its newer future variants continuing in the aviation world for at least another 30 years. Such a breathtaking piece of engineering, human ingenuity, and bold endeavour to be marvelled at!

i used to work in the hills above SF International and the 380's took off there maybe twice an hour and flew right over us headed west over the Pacific. You could almost measure time by the sound of the gigantic plane going overhead. The plane was larger than the actual building we were in and held more people than five floors of Walmart's ecommerce HQ where we worked (just across the street from TH-cam!)

The bigger the plane, the more items that can possibly go wrong. Everything has an expreration time and it's true with airplanes. An airplane of that size is actually made up of several different machines to function as one. One machine fails and you could have a disaster, however most have two or more backups in place in case one fails. That being said, the maintenance of such an airplane would be expensive and time consuming . All those
      factors and more come
      into play. Great presentation!

Having flown on a British Airways 380 it's an incredible experience, the virtually silent take off was probably one of the most surprising elements, but the size and space is amazing, such a shame that like the 340 it hasn't had the success it deserved, but more and more airlines are slowly returning them to service and I'm sure the 380 will be around for some years to come.

it’s not just the RPKs (revenue passenger kilometres) but also the fuel consumption, fuel price now/future, and the maintenance cost, all of which seems to not add up for most airlines’ bottomline, except the ME3 airlines it seems.

Brilliant piece of engineering, but there wasn't a market for this type of aircraft now. The efficiency of the A380 is way outside of the norms. You can hold 600+ PAX yes or perhaps more but the fuel costs for a quad jet is prohibitive. That is what killed this aircraft, that and that they scrapped the Freighter option of this aircraft so it limited it market. So once an A380 is retired it is scrapped since it has no life after PAX service, whereas the B747-8 has life as a freighter after PAX service.

I'm an industrial mechanic-millwright. I would NOT want to build the plane as it is merely putting together a puzzle. I wouldn't want to drive one as they drive themselves. Flying in one? I'd rather stay in a 6 star hotel catered by Emerates Air. I wouldn't want to be in on the design/engineering ... What I would look forward to is taking it apart ... like trouble shooting ... R & R, modifications ... seeing the inside of the boat on how it was all put together ... finding mistakes ... modifications ... I LOVE machines ... EVERYTHING is mechanical ... Watch that boat go in for a landing ... it don't fly ... it FLOATS ... HUGH wing surface area ...
