    After starting to learn piano as an adult a few years ago, This was my second Bach invention to learn (after the C Major invention). I have it memorized and can play it in my sleep now. Lol. But I really love this invention. It is exercise for the brain for sure. And it is a beautiful little piece of music. Thank you for helping me to learn it!

    A music mentor of mine used to speak of Chopin’s melodies _pulling at their heart strings_ . And they do...I love Chopin. Yet Bach somehow has a much more profound effect on me, as if the music is unlocking secrets deep within my mind. When you demonstrate the section from 18:15 - 18:35 (bars 19 to 23) I am overwhelmed to the point of tears.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello derinderruheliegt, thank you for your eloquent and insightful words about the power of Bach's music. I agree, this music "unlocks secrets deep within our minds." The inevitable return to C minor in bars 19-23 is a defining and heartfelt moment in the piece. With Bach's directive for "cantabile" playing, this music "sings" to us on a very deep and direct level. With all good wishes to you! 🎵

    It is unbelievable how much difference it makes to the speed of memorizing and understanding this (and other pieces) by simply giving names to sections as in this video (especially if they meaningfully capture some feature/aspect of structure/feel). It pleasantly surprised me. I find it also also helps ease reading from the music - if you've noted in your section titles, as you see those titles approaching your brain is sort of primed for the way that section plays out. Help your memory help you :)

      Hello Roman, wow, it is so wonderful hearing your enthusiasm for this lesson and in particular the descriptive labels I assigned for the various motives and sections. I spent many months naming these, trying to put in words what I thought fit the character for each one. I first came up with this idea in 1996 when I gave labels to the different sections of de Falla's "Dance of the Miller's Wife." I couldn't believe how much it helped me to track and anticipate what was coming next, and to perform it in public for memory with ease and confidence! You put it perfectly: "Help your memory help you.” Bravo! Thank you for your very appreciated feedback. All best wishes to you. :-)

( time 13:08 to 13:10 of the video) , with an ornament in the D in left hand yet. Watching you playing slowly this way I can see how to solve that passage.

    What average listener doesn’t realize is that half of people who can “play” fantasie impromptu can’t even sightread this, let alone play with proper articulation.

    • @lailaiwdable
      @lailaiwdable 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luka Meah Currently most of the editions indicate dynamics. Even without explicit articulation directions, there are many natural interpretation choices such as accents on rising figures and legato phrases for identical variations. It does not make any sense to play an entire invention in a completely flat manner, which would be quite unnatural.

    These lessons are wonderful and a big help. I'm an adult learner a little over a year into this and I'm trying to learn and understand these beautiful Inventions.
    I have a question about the fingering in this Invention in measure 13. The two lines of music intersect, with a trill being played in the left hand containing the same note (e flat) that collide with the note being played in the right hand. And generally speaking, it's confusing due to the close proximity of the two lines and how the phrasing is expressed.
    Can you give any advice on how to handle this?
    I know there's a similar occurrence in the C major invention, but it was easy to handle compared to this.
    An interesting side note... In both Inventions #1 and #2, this "fingering collision" occurs in measure 13. Coincidence, or by design?

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello Charles, thank you for your very kind words about the teaching videos. I'm so happy to hear that the lessons are helpful for you! You ask an excellent question. You are correct about the hands colliding in measure 13 of both inventions. I think it is a coincidence, but it is quite interesting that the pieces are most dense at this point in Bach's developing of the material. In the C minor invention, beat 3 of measure 13 is technically challenging because the Eb is used simultaneously by both hands. I recommend the following approach: "Set" your left hand at the front of the black key Eb, and "set" the right hand farther back on the same black key. Focus on playing the left hand trill clearly and cleanly as the dominant part. At the split second where the note Eb is shared, the right hand will barely touch the key so as not to interrupt the left hand voice, nor its own 16th-note melody. You will be "juggling" with your ears and mind so you can track both individual parts without losing any of the notes of either part. The left hand will be doing the real work of playing the note, and the right hand will be piggy-backing for just this one note. This is a lengthy answer which I hope makes sense. I wish you all the best as you learn and master this beautiful invention!

      Hi Charles, thank you for sharing your inspiring story of how you decided to learn the piano, buy a keyboard, and then begin with some of the cornerstone classical repertoire! I agree with everything you said. What if everyone channeled their thoughts and energies into a positive and beneficial endeavor such as this? To reassure you, playing a piece through with no mistakes is more difficult than it seems. My teacher used to say: "Even the easy pieces are hard!" The bottom line is the joy that this ongoing gift gives to you. For me, playing the classical piano literature has more and more become a deep well that grounds and centers me. It is a river of nourishment that never dries up! I am pulling for you, and wish you the very best as you travel this magical journey for many years to come!

      @@SallyChristianMusic Thank you for your gracious sharing of tips and ideas. About this trill, how about leaving the right hand out completely on that particular Eb note ?? Let the left hand just deal with it, so to speak?

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@drbekken Hello TEBekken, thank you for your very kind words which I appreciate hearing! You are correct that the right hand can be left out completely on this one note. This is the surest way for the two voices to both sound fluid and even. With enough hands alone practice in advance, we will have trained our ears and mind to know that this note Eb is simultaneously shared/played by both voices. At this moment, the right hand can become "a silent partner" and the left hand can carry the responsibility for both parts. :-) Thanks for your helpful feedback, and all best wishes!

      It took me a while to iron out this measure as well as measure 19. The later took me a while to work out the finger gymnastics required to play it smoothly. I can't stop listening to his music since I've discovered his Sublime Beauty, Peace and harmony. I am sure the World would be the better place if we all listen to His Music.
    Even started to learn to play keyboard because of J.S. Bach music. After Prelude in C maj from WTC, Aria from Goldberg Varitations, Minuet in G maj this No.2 Invention is my next jorney. I am right in the midle of this piece. If I may ask what the easiest keayboard pieces written by Bach that I can learn? Inventions, Sonatas, Little preludes or some of the Fugues? Hello MrYuryZ, thank you for your lovely words about this performance and the lesson. I also appreciate your thoughtful and heartfelt words about the music of J.S. Bach. I agree that Bach's music is like a language through which God conveys his message. Everything Bach wrote was for the "Glory of God." 🙏The easiest keyboard pieces would be the Minuets, the Little Preludes, the C Major Prelude WTC I, some of the Two-Part Inventions, and a few of the French Suites. Best wishes to you with your playing, and blessings to you and your loved ones as well.

      That's incredible. Do you have an automated transposer and print them out in all the keys or are able to just adjust your fingers by ear?

    • @davynathan
      @davynathan 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I just learn and memorize it in the first key and then go a half step up, relying on my ear. usually by the 5th key it gets much easier. @@turtlebackflapjack

      thank YOU! I stumbled upon this video by chance but I've never quite seen somebody really get into the beauty of Bach like that. How you shared your thoughts so naturally was a beautiful thing to watch. Also would love to see a video on the Aria from Goldberg Variations :)). God bless you

      Thank you, Hagbard, I am again so touched by your beautiful words! I have a CD recording of the Goldberg Variations (available through CD Baby), and perhaps one day I will also do a teaching video of this magnificent work. Blessings to you as well!

      Well that's an instant buy from me, I think i just have to make an account on that site. And i don't want to ramble but stumbling on this video really did make my day. That there are people still out there who really love and appreciate beauty and actually know it when they see it (or hear it) it just fills me with joy. I would like to leave you with a Bach piece (that i hope you haven't heard!) Side note: simply because *every single* version of this piece that i listened to was just depressing and slow tempo, and I instinctively knew it wasn't supposed to be like that, until i found this version and said aha! I say that because when i first listened to Bach piano i was directed to Gould... and again my gut said hhmmm.. but anyway i could go on and on.. heres the piece .. th-cam.com/video/U-I7wbMY-A4/w-d-xo.html

    Im a fresh piano student and i just learned invention no. 1 and sinfonia 11. So i thought i pick up invention 2 in c minor but i feel its way above my level. What order would you suggest i learn the inventions? Or should i brute force invention 2?

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hello Diego, you ask a good question. I would recommend you learn next Invention No. 8 in F Major. I have always felt that if a piece "speaks" to us, we will learn it more easily and have a good experience. Brute force is counterproductive. Good luck to you in choosing the piece that is just right for you at this time!

    Thank you for your analysis and demonstration here, it helped me a lot. I especially like the part about breathing, that's hard to remember sometimes if you get nervous.

    • @SallyChristianMusic
      @SallyChristianMusic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Kidren, thank you for your kind, meaningful, and appreciated words! You are so right about the power of focusing on the breathing to counteract nervousness. Conscious breathing helps us to better align our breathing with the music, as well as simultaneously relaxing our bodies. Thank you for your important observation which we all need to remember! :-) Best wishes to you and with your playing.
