Sissy Spacek in CARRIE. Kind of untouchable, one of the best screen performances ever. Has Farrow's and Duval's vulnerability, Blair's otherworldliness, and this wholly unique witchy-ness. Full-boded too; just unbelievable. And also Daniel Kaluuya in GET OUT. So emotional, so tense, so real. One of the most authentic screen performances I've ever seen in a movie.
that's my favorite horror performance. that film messed me up. that scene with the grocery bags.... scared me. i don't think i can watch that film ever again.
It’s been a few years since I’ve seen it but that scene has stuck with me ever since. Truly amazing! Got the boxset and I plan to watch it very soon 😊🖤
2:37 Yes!! finally some good Penny Dreadful recognition!! Eva Green has such a spectacular performance in that show it just blew me away! Thank you good sir haha
My Top 10: Morjana Alaoui in Martyrs Sigourney Weaver in Alien(s) Toni Colette in Hereditary Eihi Shiina in Audition Lupita Nyong'o in Us Naomi Watts in Mulholland Drive Jack O'Conell in Eden Lake Jack Nicholson in Shining Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs Jane Levy in Evil Dead
Deborah Kerr in The Innocents, Heather Donahue - the Blair With Project, Jeff Goldblum - The Fly, Sissy Spacek - Carrie, Olivia Hussey - Black Christmas,
Yes to Spacek, YES to Goldblum (and even Davis), and yes to Hussey. But amazing call for Donahue in Blair Witch. An INCREDIBLE performance that doesn't get the credit it deserves because it's found footage and Donahue never had a major career after. But that performance is STELLAR.
Not completely horror but Hugh Jackman's raging performance in Prisoners was pretty terrifying. Didn't care for Hereditary, but Toni Collette's acting in that can't be topped.
Some that are underrated: Veronica Cartwright - Alien Janet Leigh - Psycho Kurt Russell - The Thing Olivia Hussey - Black Christmas Maika Monroe - Watcher Audrey Hepburn - Wait Until Dark
Andrea Riseborough is great in Possessor but you can't mention her without mentioning Christopher Abbot. My favorites are Toni Collette in Hereditary, Anthony Hopkins in The Silence of the Lambs, Matthew Lillard in Scream and Robert Englund in Dream Warriors.
Some of my fav horror performances- Shelley DuVall in The Shining, Sissy Spacek in Carrie, Mia Goth in Pearl, Nicole Kidman in The Others, Ryan Reynolds in The Amityville Horror
Mark Duplass in Creep/Creep 2 Laura Dern in Inland Empire (and Grace Zabriskie and Harry Dean Stanton but their roles are small) Cocco in Kotoko Isabelle Adjani in Possession George C. Scott in Exorcist III Ruth Gordon in Rosemary's Baby Angela Bettis in May Agathe Rouselle in Titane (if we're counting Titane as a horror movie which letterboxd does) Eihi Shiina from Audition Choi Min-sik in I Saw the Devil (again, arguably not a horror movie but if it counts he's in there) Florence Pugh in Midsommar Tony Todd in Candyman Anna Cobb in We're All Going to the World's Fair Cheryl Lee and Ray Wise in Fire Walk With Me Andrea Riseborough in Possessor Donald Sutherland in Don't Look Now Mia Goth in Infinity Pool
The performances of Shelley Duvall and Mia farrow are probably my favorites that I'm always thinking about, they're amazing - and of course Adjani in possession
Non sarcastic answer: Wilhelm von Homburg in Ghostbusters 2, Rei Hance in Blair Witch, Essie Davis in Babadook... then Sigourney Weaver in the first two alien films.
Philip Stone as Grady the dead racist in The Shining. If he'd been in more than one scene he'd have completely stolen the whole film. Utterly chilling performance.
While I won’t deny the praise for Toni Collette’s performance in “Hereditary” (she’s amazing in it), the stuff that Chris Stuckmann says about it’s impact on her is… not true, or at least not how she tells it, in just about any interview she gave about the movie.
These people gave such basic answers. Sissy Spacek (and Piper Laurie) in Carrie have stood the test of time. Also Anthony Perkins in Psycho, Kathy Bates in Misery, Isabelle Adjani in Possession, Deborah Kerr in The Innocents, Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins in Lambs etc.
How can Alex Wolff be the only one that said Lupita in US when that is the only acceptable answer?! She even gave the best answer here as well with the actors from Train to Busan. Why she is so underappreciated?! Makes me so mad... Also, Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out! How strange that Alex Wolff mentioned Milly Shapiro, but not Toni Collette, I sense on set drama...
Lupita was so real for mentioning the actors in Train to busan
Yes Gong Yoo and the child actress were so good
Awesome film!
Sissy Spacek in Carrie.
THANK YOU
Yessssssss!!!!! Great answer
My choice as well
Sissy Spacek in CARRIE.
My first thought was Isabelle Adjani in Possession! Her performance seriously stuck with me
that's my favorite horror performance. that film messed me up. that scene with the grocery bags.... scared me. i don't think i can watch that film ever again.
Yesss I immediately thought of that one too! 😊
Same here! Literally only watched that two weeks ago. She’s amazing in it! The film is so unsettling and unpredictable but a great watch.
Toni Collette deserved an Oscar for Hereditary and she wasn’t even nominated. What a sham.
Same like Lupita for Us. Both Actresses won the Most Awards in their Seasons. One one the Hardest Oscar Snubs in History.
Florence Pugh is so impressive in Midsommar. You constantly feel the pain within her character, it creates so much empathy for her.
I thought she was bad in that movie LOL
@@Starkardursame lol
@@Starkardur You got no taste lil bro LOL
@@PLaStiiCMoNtAGE or I have a less basic bitch taste than some
The fact that it took almost 3 minutes to someone mentioned Isabelle Adjani's in Possession it almost gave me a heart attack.
At least the right answer was in this video. Also finally a shoutout to Spoorloos aka The OG Vanishing. What a great film
Surprised no one said Kathy Bates in Misery
Yeah that's fantastic. I was surprised no one said Anthony Perkins in Psycho. A lot of good ones mentioned though.
It’s not a horror film
Oh my god McAvoy mentioned Eva Green in PENNY DREADFUL, he is so iconic
Didnt like that show but i remember that episode! And it was great.
Was gonna point that out too, fair play to him for mentioning her. She is so underrated and that show is great.
Eva Green's performance in the Seance episode is one of the greatest bits of acting I've ever seen. So glad it got a shout out here.
It’s been a few years since I’ve seen it but that scene has stuck with me ever since. Truly amazing! Got the boxset and I plan to watch it very soon 😊🖤
I was waiting for the Toni Colette shout outs. She is incredible
2:37 Yes!! finally some good Penny Dreadful recognition!! Eva Green has such a spectacular performance in that show it just blew me away! Thank you good sir haha

Eihi Shiina in Audition
Lupita Nyong'o in Us
Naomi Watts in Mulholland Drive
Jack O'Conell in Eden Lake
Jack Nicholson in Shining

Jane Levy in Evil Dead
Aliens isn't a horror flick
@@JP47471 Yeah it is classfied as as Action Horror Film is Film no matter genre.
Essie Davis in The Babadook is one of my favourites. Such a underrated actress.
That's a good 1!!!
I was hoping someone would say Deborah Kerr in The Innocents!
Sheryl Lee in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. Not easy to watch as it's so much darker than the tv show but she's great.
Jeff Goldblum in 'The Fly'.
Both him and Geena are wonderful.
Max schreck in the original Nosferatu.
Not completely horror but Hugh Jackman's raging performance in Prisoners was pretty terrifying. Didn't care for Hereditary, but Toni Collette's acting in that can't be topped.
Oz Perkins coming in with The Night of the Hunter. Absolutely classic movie. Great film and a fantastic watch.
Rebecca Hall gives a performance on par with Toni Collette in Hereditary in Resurrection (2022) and hardly ANYBODY is talking about it!!!
And The Night House she great as well
She's awesome in everything! I think my favorite performance of hers is actually in Christine (2016)
Some that are underrated:
Veronica Cartwright - Alien
Janet Leigh - Psycho
Kurt Russell - The Thing
Olivia Hussey - Black Christmas
Maika Monroe - Watcher
Audrey Hepburn - Wait Until Dark
First thought is Kathy Bates in MISERY. Also Angela Bettis in MAY. Both amazingly chilling performances.
Deborah Kerr in The Innocents. Her performance is so great that you never really know if the ghosts are real or if they’re machinations of her mind.
Omg yes 😱
Demi Moore in the Substance is another one that i know people will be talking about for years and years and years
I really want to see this soon! Seen the trailer and heard about it before that and it looks brilliant 😊
@Doonisha86 get to the cinema asap you do not want to miss seeing this movie on the big screen , can't recommend it enough
One of my favorites is Sheryl Lee in Fire Walk with me and for a newer film I’d probably go with Florence Pugh in Midsommar.
Some of my fav horror performances-
Shelley DuVall in The Shining, Sissy Spacek in Carrie, Mia Goth in Pearl, Nicole Kidman in The Others, Ryan Reynolds in The Amityville Horror
Mark Duplass in Creep/Creep 2
Laura Dern in Inland Empire (and Grace Zabriskie and Harry Dean Stanton but their roles are small)
Cocco in Kotoko
Isabelle Adjani in Possession
George C. Scott in Exorcist III
Ruth Gordon in Rosemary's Baby
Angela Bettis in May
Agathe Rouselle in Titane (if we're counting Titane as a horror movie which letterboxd does)
Eihi Shiina from Audition
Choi Min-sik in I Saw the Devil (again, arguably not a horror movie but if it counts he's in there)
Florence Pugh in Midsommar
Tony Todd in Candyman
Anna Cobb in We're All Going to the World's Fair
Cheryl Lee and Ray Wise in Fire Walk With Me
Andrea Riseborough in Possessor
Donald Sutherland in Don't Look Now
Mia Goth in Infinity Pool
Creep mention !!! His character is really off beat insane and played SO WELL
Mark Duplass mentioned 💪🦅
Also love Anthony Perkins in the Psycho films and Rutger Hauer in The Hitcher.
The performances of Shelley Duvall and Mia farrow are probably my favorites that I'm always thinking about, they're amazing - and of course Adjani in possession
One of my favorite letterboxd videos ever!!!
No one said Jodie Foster for Silence of the Lambs?! Remake the video immediately. Or even Anthony Hopkins?!
Lambs and Seven are Thriller. No Horror Movies. When People learn this 😂
@@misterx6329 it's both, horror and thriller. It's just referred to as a thriller more often because horror is often considered an unserious genre.
@@misterx6329They’re actually classed as horror crime.
Yes, McAvoy. Eva Green was transcendent in Penny Dreadful.
Bruce Campbell in Evil Dead 2
Mia farrow rosemary’s baby
Alex Wolff is the man
the double punch of Pattinson and Dafoe in The Lighthouse! AWESOME STUFF
The list could be endless but hell yeah Mike Flanagan, Isabelle Adjani in Possession was the one that came to my mind first.
Isabelle Adjani’s performance in Possession is one of the most impressive things i witnessed in movies
Jeremy Irons and Jeremy Irons
Eva Green in Penny Dreadful. Yes. Underrated.
more videos like this pls!
Sigourney Weaver in Alien
Definitely Bette Davis in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane. Why didn’t we get a clip????
Actor: Erwin Leder in Angst (1983)
Actress: Deborah Kerr in The Innocents (1961)
Robert englund - elm street
Non sarcastic answer: Wilhelm von Homburg in Ghostbusters 2, Rei Hance in Blair Witch, Essie Davis in Babadook... then Sigourney Weaver in the first two alien films.
Florence Pugh in Midsommar. YES
Very good picks. But I'm going with Deborah Kerr in The Innocents.
I feel the exorcist wasn’t mentioned enough. Linda and Ellen were absolutely phenomenal in that masterpiece
Both Pennywise performances from IT. Bill Skarsgard was good but Tim Curry terrified me as a kid especially when he popped up thru the shower drain.
It's either Linda Blair or Terence Stamp in The Collector. If y'all have never seen The Collector check it out. His performance is an all-timer.
All of the above, plus Rebecca Hall in The Night House
Mia Goth's performance in Pearl will stand the test of time.
Yes Eva Green!
Tony Todd/Candyman
Kathy Bates/Misery
Robert Englund/NOES
Max Schreck in Nosferatu. There is this photo of him taking a break in full makeup and he still looks like he's just risen from his coffin.
Karloff in Frankenstein/Bride. Isabelle Adjani in Possession. Peter Cushing in any Hammer Frankenstein.
Toni Collette in Hereditary. Absolutely extraordinary performance. Naturally, the Academy didn't nominate her.
My vote goes to Florence Pugh in Midsommar (I still cannot fathom how she did that) and Essie Davis in The Babadook
Sophie Wilde in Talk to Me. Fucking insane what she was able to do in her film debut
do more videos like this!!!!
essie davis in the babadook!!!

Eva Green was underrated in Penny Dreadful
Glad to see Chris Stuckmann here
James McAvoy in Split
Dee Wallace and Danny in Cujo
Bruce Campbell in Army of Darkness.
Robert Shaw in Jaws
Nicole Kidman in The Others... Oscar worthy performance..
While I won’t deny the praise for Toni Collette’s performance in “Hereditary” (she’s amazing in it), the stuff that Chris Stuckmann says about it’s impact on her is… not true, or at least not how she tells it, in just about any interview she gave about the movie.
Penny Dreadful ❤❤❤
Rebecca Ferguson in Doctor Sleep
These people gave such basic answers. Sissy Spacek (and Piper Laurie) in Carrie have stood the test of time. Also Anthony Perkins in Psycho, Kathy Bates in Misery, Isabelle Adjani in Possession, Deborah Kerr in The Innocents, Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins in Lambs etc.

Kathy bates - misery
Lupita knows whats up
Isabelle Adjani. Period.
How is Jack Nicholson in The Shining controversial??
No Anthony Perkins love?
Unexpected Chris stuckmann. Really cool that he is on the letterboxd channel
In conclusion: the best performances in horror movies (or any genre actually) are given by women, we love to see it.
Jack Nicholson in the Shining is perhaps his most overrated performance. Shelley Duvall owns that movie
Shelley is kind of next level all throughout that flick.
more people should have said linda blair florence pugh is weak
Ugh Chris Stuckmann
Cast of "The silnce of the lambs"
