    I love the idea of Robin doing a commercial while all this is going on
    Robin: Nabisco Oreos! They're delicious!
    Starfire: HOW CAN PEOPLE BE THIS HEARTLESS?! (emotional breakdown)
    Robin: Two chocolate cookies and a sweet cream center!
    Red Arrow: Nobody should go through what I've been through (emotional breakdown)
    Robin: Eat them with milk, or just dunk them in!
    Raven: MY MIND! I CAN TASTE COLORS! I CAN'T FEEL MY ARMS! (emotional breakdown)
    Robin: Oreo cookies are the ultimate cookie! From Nabisco!

    Linkara, so I was working at a food vendor. A couple of kids bought some Pepsi's off of my aunt and she said (jokingly) that she felt bad about selling kids sodas to an older gentleman and, I kid you not, the old man said word for word your whole "first they start on the Pepsi, then they move to the harder stuff like Mountain Dew" joke. I am serious. I don't know if he was a fan, or it was a coincidence, but I was laughing on the inside. I could not believe it.

    Oh! Scarface 1983. See, Tony was technically the villain, but his lavish lifestyle made him appealing to audiences which led some to completely miss the point of the film. It inspired a lot of drug dealers in the 1980s which cemented its popularity in hip-hop. Yes, even though the movie ended with Tony floating dead in his own fountain, people wanted to be him. I guess that's what happens when writers overestimate their audience's intelligence.

    I came back to this to re-hear about the legacy of a character that, any other time, I'd just laugh off and go "oh, comic books." But no...after reading more about it, I genuinely like the character of The Protector.
    The whole reason he became a superhero was because it was the only way to convince his little cousin to stop taking drugs. Little cuz got addicted, Jason Hart and family talked to him, own family talked to him, he didn't listen. But he loved superheroes. So Jason became The Protector to convince little cuz not to do drugs. This guy would eventually save little cuz's life, get on Nightwing's radar, and get training from Nightwing to fight crime better. Dorky costume or no...you don't mess with someone on Nightwing's good list.
    And then Heroes In Crisis happened. And what happened there is less "character assassination" and more "character whatever happens in a Junji Ito manga, pick one." They turned The Protector, the epitome of "don't do drugs," into a closet druggie. Who does all the drugs. Before he gets killed by the event comic's problem.
    Disrespectful. Totally disrespectful.

    As someone who is pro-legalization of pot and a psychology major, people under the age of 16 shouldn't smoke it unless they're doing it medicinally. There is a statistically significant rise in cases of schizophrenia for people who smoke it under the age of 16. It's possible that this is due to self medication, and even if it's not I still think the risk/reward is far better than pretty much any other medication out there, but ya know, there's no reason to risk it just for kicks. Like, it shouldn't be illegal, but it shouldn't be promoted.

    I don't think it's the actual use of drugs and alcohol that Cyborg was talking about being "sexy and glamorous", but rather the people and characters who are shown using them. To an impressionable kid, "drinking and smoking are both cool because James Bond does them and he's cool" is sound logic.
    The best examples that come to mind for me are characters like "Buddy Love" from "The Nutty Professor" (especially the original version with Jerry Lewis) and James Bond - suave and charismatic men who are automatically the coolest guys in the room without even trying, and usually shown with a drink or something in hand. Baseball players and chewing tobacco also come to mind.
    Hell, Speedy himself could have been an example in-universe had things turned out differently; if he were a superhero (like he is here and not the in-name-only kind of dick he was in Rise of Arsenal) and still a heroin addict, kids who look up to him might get the idea that "since our badass idol Speedy uses heroin, heroin MUST be cool and good!"

    • @KTF0

      The Marv Wolfman/George Perez version pretty much reflects Starfire like that. She has been imprisoned, and part of royalty beforehand so she was experiencing everything innocently for the first time, except in the comics, Starfire was a bit sexualized and was the babe of the group. She eventually got went out and got engaged with Robin. In this era everyone was 18ish as opposed to the TV show it seemed everyone was a bit younger so, I guess it was uncomfortable for everyone to be ogling a teen.

    • @jamesadamsfl
      @jamesadamsfl 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the original Wolfman comics, Starfire was generally portrayed as innocent of Earth culture while also being a sex symbol. The difference there was that Tamaraneans were written as being a more permissive and emotional society: especially with the emotion of LOVE. as Linkara joked, their society was supposed to be based around LOVE, not having sex with any random person like a Frank Miller fantasy.

    As someone who's a heroin user I just want to say that regardless of what you think of drug dealers (btw none of the hard drug dealers I know sell to kids), they don't want their customers to die. Because that's a terrible business strategy. I once got heroin that was cut with meth because the dealer thought that customers would die if they had pure heroin, since adding a stimulant like meth makes it harder to OD on heroin (meth is a drug I've used three times intentionally and never enjoyed for the record). In the hard drug world most users buy what's called a "point" (0.1 grams) of a given substance. Most of the other users in the scene will buy a point and simply inject water into the baggie containing the point and mix up everything inside at once before drawing it up through a piece of cotton filter for injection. Personally I don't do that because while I may be addicted, I do enjoy being alive. Users do that because the kind of heroin sold where I live is almost exclusively China white lion heroin which dissolves entirely in water without need for boiling and citric acid, and the heroin (if cut) is cut with sugar (which is water soluble so as far as cutting agents go: pretty harmless) or Meth as mentioned earlier (meth is also water soluble if pure, and if not pure, hopefully just cut with sugar).
    I've also commented on the "Rise of Arsenal" video sharing some information regarding my own experiences. In neither of my comments about my drug use should you take what I say as an endorsement. If you're a kid: don't do drugs. If you're an adult: I won't tell you what to do with your life, but if you're going to use drugs then please learn as much about harm reduction as possible; especially if you're going to inject. Any kids who sadly get caught up in the world of drugs against my advice should at least heed the harm minimisation advice so you have a chance to live through your drug use and get clean when you realise you should probably stop.

    • @adam_nathan
      @adam_nathan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, and for the record: While this PSA comic is not too bad as far as PSA stuff goes, there is no PSA which can really stop someone from using drugs. It's been known for years that *you can't punish an addict into recovery* . Whether people like it or not, once you're addicted the job becomes surviving until you have the desire and/or resources to quit. For opiates opioid replacement therapy with buprenorphine or methadone is a way to be tapered off opiates safely and in a way that reduces your chances of relapse and withdrawal.

    I can name several things where drinking at least is portrayed as the most awesome thing in the world...but it boils down to two words: beer commercials! and in many older (and probably modern) movies and shows about the "high class" folk, they're almost ALWAYS seen drinking martinis and whatnot. As for drugs being seen as "sexy" and "glamorous," probably a bunch of stuff in the 70's at least did so.

    Who here knows why marijuana originally made illegal. I want to see how common that knowledge is
    It was originally illegal because a man named Harry Anslinger who was the commissioner of the federal bureau of narcotics in 1930 had his funding cut. He started claiming not only that marijuana caused insanity, criminality and death when he spoke to the supreme court but also made Mexicans bloodthirsty to increase his funding. Later on under Nixon it was made a schedule one drug alongside things like heroin and morphine. They even admitted to knowing it was harmless and were just using it asa a reason to round up people they didn't like.

    Many may laugh, but this was my introduction to the Teen Titans, including Starfire and Changeling. (Cyborg was on Super Powers Team and Wonder Girl and Speedy on the original Teen Titans cartoon). I was sorry the Protector didn't get his own series about a superhero targeting drug dealers, or at least a miniseries or more than just background cameos. Although as long as he wasn't used as superhero cannon fodder in some mega event it could be worse.

    Friendship is Magic, while entertaining and surprisingly intelligent, is pretty trippy. We have colorful cartoon ponies fighting bad guys with rainbows and songs. Not to mention the furry confusion of some animals talking while some don't. And that's just the main series. The movies are even trippier when you see colorful HUMAN versions of the ponies becoming pony-themed magical girls. As you can well imagine, the show has a lot of fans in Japan. :P

      It's even worse if you know the origins of The Protector: His little brother loved superheroes but ended up becoming a drug addict, and so he decided to become a superhero to fight against drugs, and to be a hero that his little brother could look up to. It's honestly a really nice, wholesome backstory for such a small, minor character.
