    If I am replacing the pistons and cylinders at 1500 hours and oil analysis information tells me nothing is wrong with the Rod Bearing, shouldn't I just change the Rod bearing anyway because I have easy access to the bearings? ... I never hear of mechanics changing these bearings.

    If you look closely at that "lycoming crankcase", you can see where, in the upper left corner, the distributor goes in.
    The transaxle bolts to the other end.
    Hey....what the...?

    The photos that are described as "Lycoming crankcase halves" are actually Volkswagen "air-cooled" Beetle crankcase halves. Just so ya know !!! But of course they are somewhat similar and all comments do apply.

    With regards to roller bearings, it is more a matter of cost and now oils are so good it is less beneficial. Historically engines such as the DB601 and HL230 were large V12's that used roller bearings on the crank and even on the conrods. Most motorcycles and small engines use roller bearings also. Some companies have wanted to reintroduce roller bearings as the fuel efficiency is beneficial, and it will probably happen soon enough but the need for a split case bearing, or multi piece crank make it much more complicated and expensive. Adding thousands of dollars to the manufacturing cost of a common engine today is a large expense for the end user.
